- 1.Given that (x + 2)(x − 7) = 0, write down the two solutions of x.
- 2.Explain why the equation 4x + 3 = 4x + 10 has no solution for x.
- 3.A rule turns each input x into an output y. The inputs are x = 0, 1, 2, 3 and the outputs are y = 4, 7, 10, 13. Work out the output when x = 5.
- 4.Two numbers have a sum of 24. Their difference is 6. Work out the two numbers.
- 5.The graph of y = x² − 2x − 8 takes these values: when x = −2, y = 0; when x = −1, y = −5; when x = 0, y = −8; when x = 3, y = −5; when x = 4, y = 0. Use these values to write down the two solutions of x² − 2x − 8 = 0.y = x² − 2x − 8
- 6.A car's speed increases steadily while it accelerates. Its speed v m/s after t seconds is given by v = u + at, where u is the starting speed in m/s and a is the acceleration in m/s². A car starts at u = 4 m/s and accelerates at a = 2 m/s² until it reaches v = 20 m/s. Work out t, the time taken in seconds.
- 7.A square tile has an area of 144 cm². Work out the side length of the tile.
- 8.The graph of t = 240 ÷ s shows how the time, t hours, taken for a car journey of 240 miles depends on its average speed, s mph. Use the relationship to work out the time taken when the average speed is 48 mph.
- 9.Work out the gradient of the straight line that passes through the points (−1, 5) and (3, −7).
- 10.A geometric sequence starts at 4, and each term after that is found by multiplying the term before it by 3. Write down the first four terms of the sequence.
- 11.The formula for the perimeter of a square is P = 4s, where s is the side length. Make s the subject of the formula.
- 12.p = 4. Work out the value of 2p³.
- 13.A box contains 6 chocolates. Write down an expression for the total number of chocolates in c boxes.
- 14.A plumber charges a £40 call-out fee plus £25 for each hour worked. The total charge, £C, for a job lasting h hours is given by C = 40 + 25h. Work out the charge for a job lasting 3 hours, and name what kind of statement C = 40 + 25h is.
- 15.Which of these points lies in the first quadrant?
