- 1.A quadratic graph has roots at x = −3 and x = 5, and it crosses the y-axis at (0, −15). Work out the equation of the curve in the form y = (x − a)(x − b).
- 2.A rule turns each input x into an output y. The inputs are x = 0, 1, 2, 3 and the outputs are y = 4, 7, 10, 13. Work out the output when x = 5.
- 3.A zip-line runs from a platform 25 m high to a landing point 5 m high, over a horizontal distance of 40 m. Work out the gradient of the zip-line.
- 4.Oliver buys b pens. Each pen costs £2. Write down an expression for the total cost, in pounds.
- 5.A candle is 30 cm tall and burns down at a steady rate of 1 cm per hour. Write down the function for the height of the candle y, in centimetres, after x hours.
- 6.A conversion graph shows that 5 miles is equivalent to 8 kilometres. Use this to work out how many kilometres are equivalent to 20 miles.
- 7.Solve x² + 7x = 0.
- 8.In a sequence, each term is half the term before it. The sequence begins 100, 50, 25. Write down the next term.
- 9.A rectangle is x cm wide and twice as long as it is wide, so its area A cm² is given by A = 2x². Work out A when x = 3.
- 10.Work out the equation of the straight line through the points (−3, 4) and (1, −8).
- 11.The graph of y = 20/x is drawn for x > 0. As the value of x increases, what happens to the value of y?
- 12.The mean of four numbers is 12.5. Three of the numbers are 8, 15 and 19. Form an equation using n for the fourth number, and solve it to find n.
- 13.Solve 5(x + 3) = 40
- 14.Write down 0.2x with its coefficient written as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 15.A sequence begins at 7. Each term after the first is found by adding 6 to the term before it. Work out the 6th term of the sequence.
