- 1.A ramp rises 3 m over a horizontal distance of 12 m. Work out the gradient of the ramp.
- 2.A taxi charges a £3 fixed fee plus £2 for each mile travelled. Write an expression, in pounds, for the total cost of a journey of n miles.
- 3.The graph of y = x² − 2x − 8 takes these values: when x = −2, y = 0; when x = −1, y = −5; when x = 0, y = −8; when x = 3, y = −5; when x = 4, y = 0. Use these values to write down the two solutions of x² − 2x − 8 = 0.y = x² − 2x − 8
- 4.The solution set of x ≥ −1 is drawn on a number line. Which description of that number line is correct?
- 5.A number machine multiplies its input by 3. The output is 15. Work out the input.
- 6.A rectangular field has length (3a + 2) metres and width (a − 1) metres. Write a simplified expression for the perimeter of the field.
- 7.The graph of y = x² − 5x + 6 crosses the x-axis at two points. By factorising, work out the x-coordinates of these two points.y = x² − 5x + 6
- 8.The graph of t = 240 ÷ s shows how the time, t hours, taken for a car journey of 240 miles depends on its average speed, s mph. Use the relationship to work out the time taken when the average speed is 48 mph.
- 9.A straight line has gradient −3 and passes through the point (0, 1). Work out the value of y when x = 2.
- 10.Make p the subject of the formula n = p/3.
- 11.The diagram shows the graph of a quadratic function. Write down the values of x where the graph crosses the x-axis.
- 12.Make x the subject of the formula y = 5x + 3.y = 5x + 3
- 13.Sophie's mother is 34 years old. In x years' time she will be 50 years old. Work out the value of x.
- 14.A plumber charges a £35 call-out fee plus £20 for each hour worked, h. On a certain job the total charge was £115. Work out how many hours the plumber worked.
- 15.A sequence begins at 60, and each term after that is found by subtracting 7 from the term before it. Work out the 5th term of the sequence.
