Answer key
- (d) 6√3 cm — Method: AB lies alongside the 30° angle at A and AC is the hypotenuse, so the ratio needed is cosine: cos 30° = AB ÷ AC. Working: the exact value of cos 30° is √3/2, so AB = 12 × √3 ÷ 2, and half of 12 is 6. Answer: AB = 6√3 cm, which is about 10.4 cm. Using sine by mistake gives 12 × 1/2 = 6 cm, which is the length of BC rather than AB. Using tan 30° = 1/√3 gives 12 ÷ √3, which is 4√3 cm. Remembering cos 30° as √3 rather than as √3 halved gives 12√3 cm, longer than the hypotenuse and so impossible.
- (a) £157.00 — Area covered = (angle ÷ 360) × π × r² = (90 ÷ 360) × 3.14 × 400 = 0.25 × 1256 = 314 km². Charge = 314 × £0.50 = £157.00. (£7.85 comes from forgetting to square the radius, using 0.25 × 3.14 × 20 = 15.7 km² and then charging that; £628.00 comes from finding the area of a full circle, 3.14 × 400 = 1256 km², and forgetting the angle fraction before charging; £15.70 comes from using the arc length formula, 0.25 × 2 × 3.14 × 20 = 31.4, in place of the area, and charging that.)
- (a) 24 — The display is 4 tins wide, 3 tins high and 2 tins deep, and every position in that block is filled, so the total number of tins is the product of all three measurements: 4 × 3 × 2 = 24. "12" comes from multiplying only the width and height shown in the front elevation (4 × 3), forgetting the depth entirely. "9" comes from adding the three measurements (4 + 3 + 2) instead of multiplying them. "6" comes from multiplying only the height and depth (3 × 2), forgetting the width shown by the front elevation.
- (b) 8 cm — Area = base × height, so height = area ÷ base = 136 ÷ 17 = 8 cm. (16 cm comes from using the triangle formula, thinking area = 1/2 × base × height and so height = 2 × area ÷ base; 2312 cm comes from multiplying the area by the base instead of dividing; 119 cm comes from subtracting the base from the area instead of dividing the area by the base.)
- (a) 5√2 cm — Method: the angles of a triangle add to 180°, so the third angle is 45° as well and the two shorter sides are equal. Take one of them as the side opposite a 45° angle and use sin 45° = opposite ÷ hypotenuse. Working: the exact value of sin 45° is √2/2, so the shorter side = 10 × √2 ÷ 2, and half of 10 is 5. Answer: 5√2 cm, which is about 7.07 cm. Remembering sin 45° as √2 rather than as √2 halved gives 10√2 cm, which is longer than the hypotenuse. Halving the hypotenuse because 45° is half of 90° gives 5 cm. Taking the value from the other special triangle, sin 60° = √3/2, gives 5√3 cm.
- (d) 2π cm — Arc length is the fraction θ/360 of the full circumference, 2πr. Substitute θ = 60 and r = 6: 60 out of 360 is one sixth, and the full circumference is 2π × 6 = 12π. One sixth of 12π is 2π, so the arc length is 2π cm. Choosing 12π cm uses the full circumference without scaling it down by the fraction θ/360 first. Choosing 6π cm applies the SECTOR AREA formula, (θ/360) × πr², instead of the arc length formula — that calculation actually gives 6π, which is the area in cm², not a length. Choosing π cm uses πr instead of 2πr, missing the factor of 2 in the circumference formula.
- (a) 75° — The three angles in the triangle formed by the two supports and the ground add up to 180°. Two of the angles are 34° and 71°, so the third angle is 180 − 34 − 71 = 75, which is 75°. 105° comes from adding the two given angles together instead of subtracting them from 180° (34 + 71 = 105). 146° comes from computing 180 − 34 = 146 and forgetting to also subtract 71°. 37° comes from subtracting the two given angles from each other instead of using the triangle's angle sum (71 − 34 = 37).
- (b) (22, −13) — The vector from the ship to the lighthouse is (12, −4) − (2, 5) = (10, −9). Sailing along this vector twice from the start gives (2, 5) + 2 × (10, −9) = (2 + 20, 5 − 18) = (22, −13). '(12, −4)' stops after the ship reaches the lighthouse and ignores the second identical leg. '(−18, 23)' comes from finding the vector the wrong way round, as (2, 5) − (12, −4) = (−10, 9), and then doubling that. '(2, 5)' comes from adding the vector and then subtracting it again, wrongly cancelling the two legs instead of adding them.
- (d) £100.48 — Area of the rug = (angle ÷ 360) × π × r² = (180 ÷ 360) × 3.14 × 16 = 0.5 × 50.24 = 25.12 m². Cost = 25.12 × £4 = £100.48. (£200.96 comes from finding the area of a full circle, 3.14 × 16 = 50.24 m², and forgetting the angle fraction before costing it; £25.12 comes from forgetting to square the radius, using 0.5 × 3.14 × 4 = 6.28 m², and then costing that; £50.24 comes from using the arc length formula, 0.5 × 2 × 3.14 × 4 = 12.56, in place of the area, and costing that.)
- (a) 2.40m — Method: a cost found from a rate is the rate multiplied by the amount bought. Working: the rate is £2.40 per kilogram and the amount is m kilograms, so the cost is 2.40 × m. Answer: 2.40m. A candidate who divides the amount by the rate instead of multiplying writes m/2.40. A candidate who adds the rate to the amount instead of multiplying writes 2.40 + m. A candidate who subtracts the rate from the amount instead of multiplying writes m − 2.40.
- (a) 376.8 cm³ — Volume of a cone = (1/3)πr²h. Substitute r = 6 and h = 10: (1/3) × 3.14 × 6² × 10 = (1/3) × 3.14 × 36 × 10 = (1/3) × 1130.4 = 376.8 cm³.
- (d) 180 — Method: bearings are measured clockwise from north and written using three figures. Working: south is a half turn (180°) clockwise from north. A student who answers 090 has confused south with east. A student who answers 270 has confused south with west. A student who answers 018 has written the correct digits in the wrong order. Answer: 180.
- (c) 52° — When two straight lines cross, the angles opposite each other at the crossing point are vertically opposite and are equal. Ray OQ is opposite ray OP and ray OS is opposite ray OR, so angle QOS is vertically opposite angle POR. Therefore angle QOS = 52°.
- (d) 1535 cm² — The wiper sweeps out a sector of radius 40 cm, the blade length, through an angle of 110°. Sector area is angle ÷ 360 × π × radius²: 110 ÷ 360 × 3.14 × 1600 = 1535.1 cm², which rounds to 1535 cm². Forgetting to square the radius, using radius instead of radius², gives 38 cm². Using 110 ÷ 180 instead of 110 ÷ 360 for the fraction gives 3070 cm². Treating the 40 cm blade length as a diameter, so using a radius of 20 cm, gives 384 cm².
- (c) 27 cm² — Area of a rectangle = length × width = 4.5 × 6 = 27 cm². A pupil who adds the two sides instead of multiplying gets 4.5 + 6 = 10.5 cm². A pupil who works out the perimeter instead of the area gets 2 × (4.5 + 6) = 21 cm². A pupil who rounds 4.5 up to 5 before multiplying gets 5 × 6 = 30 cm². The correct area is 27 cm².
