Answer key
- (c) 13 — Area of the trapezium = 1/2 × (8 + 12) × 5 = 1/2 × 100 = 50 m². Number of bags = 50 ÷ 4 = 12.5, which rounds up to 13 bags since seed is sold only in whole bags. A student who mistakenly uses 2 m² of coverage per bag instead of 4 m² finds 50 ÷ 2 = 25 bags.
- (b) 4 m — The two triangles are similar, so height ÷ shadow is the same for both objects. For the post, height ÷ shadow = 1.2 ÷ 1.8. Flagpole height = 6 × (1.2 ÷ 1.8) = 4 m. A student who multiplies the flagpole's shadow by the post's height without applying the ratio gets 6 × 1.2 = 7.2 m. A student who assumes a constant DIFFERENCE between shadow and height instead of a constant ratio finds the post's shadow minus height, 1.8 − 1.2 = 0.6 m, then subtracts that from the flagpole's shadow to get 6 − 0.6 = 5.4 m.
- (d) 1 kg — First find the total mass in grams: 4 × 250 = 1000 g. Then convert to kilograms by dividing by 1000: 1000 ÷ 1000 = 1 kg. Finding the correct total in grams but forgetting to divide by 1000 gives 1000 kg. Adding the number of packs to the pack mass instead of multiplying, 4 + 250 = 254 g, gives 0.254 kg. Dividing the pack mass by the number of packs instead of multiplying, 250 ÷ 4 = 62.5 g, gives 0.0625 kg.
- (b) £1.57 — Slice area = (90 ÷ 360) × 3.14 × 10² = 0.25 × 314 = 78.5 cm². Cost = 78.5 × £0.02 = £1.57. (£0.16 comes from forgetting to square the radius, using 0.25 × 3.14 × 10 for the area; £6.28 comes from finding the area of the whole cake and forgetting the angle fraction; £0.31 comes from using the arc length formula instead of the sector area formula.)
- (d) 452.16 cm² — Area = πr². Substitute r = 12: area = 3.14 × 12² = 3.14 × 144 = 452.16 cm².
- (d) 6.4 cm — The scale factor from the larger sign to the smaller sign is 4 ÷ 9, so the smaller side is 14.4 × 4 ÷ 9 = 6.4 cm. The distractor 32.4 cm comes from using the ratio the wrong way round, 14.4 × 9 ÷ 4 = 32.4. The distractor 9.4 cm comes from subtracting the difference between the ratio numbers (9 − 4 = 5) from the given length, 14.4 − 5 = 9.4. The distractor 3.6 cm comes from dividing the given length by 4 only, 14.4 ÷ 4 = 3.6, without also using the other ratio number.
- (c) RHS — Both triangles are right-angled, and have equal hypotenuses (13 cm) and one equal corresponding side (5 cm), so they are congruent by the RHS (right angle, hypotenuse, side) condition — the three facts given are exactly a right angle, a hypotenuse and one other side. The distractor SAS would apply if two sides and the angle between those two sides were matched, but the right angle here lies between the 5 cm side and the third side, not between the 5 cm side and the hypotenuse. The distractor SSS needs all three pairs of sides matched, and only two sides of each triangle are given — the third side would first have to be calculated by Pythagoras, so SSS is not the condition the given facts supply. The distractor AAS would need two angles and a non-included side matched, but only one angle in each triangle is given.
- (b) 113.04 cm² — Sector area is (angle ÷ 360) × π × radius², and radius means the RADIUS, not the diameter: here the diameter is 24 cm, so the radius is 12 cm. The fraction is 90 ÷ 360 = 1/4, and 12² = 144, so the area is 0.25 × 3.14 × 144 = 113.04 cm². Using the diameter itself as if it were the radius gives 0.25 × 3.14 × 576 = 452.16 cm². Using the arc-length formula, 2 × π × radius, instead of the area formula gives 0.25 × 2 × 3.14 × 12 = 18.84 cm². Using the radius instead of its square gives 0.25 × 3.14 × 12 = 9.42 cm².
- (d) Yes, because 45 ÷ 360 = 1/8, and this fraction applies to any radius. — Priti is correct: 45 ÷ 360 = 1/8, and because sector area = (angle ÷ 360) × full circle area, this fraction depends only on the angle, not on the radius, so it holds for every circle. (The statement giving 45 ÷ 360 = 1/6 comes from an arithmetic slip when simplifying the fraction; the statement that the fraction depends on the radius is wrong because the radius cancels out of the angle fraction in the sector-area formula; the statement adding that it only works for this particular radius is wrong because the 1/8 fraction is true for every radius, not a special case.)
- (d) 10.3 m — By Pythagoras' theorem, the hypotenuse = √(5² + 9²) = √(25 + 81) = √106 = 10.29...≈ 10.3 m. "106 m" is the value under the square root sign, correct as far as it goes but with the final square root step left out. "14 m" comes from adding the two shorter sides, 5 + 9, instead of using Pythagoras' theorem at all. "10.2 m" comes from rounding 10.29...m down to 10.2 instead of correctly rounding it up to 10.3.
- (c) 6.3 m — By Pythagoras' theorem, the height = √(7² − 3²) = √(49 − 9) = √40 = 6.32...≈ 6.3 m. "6.4 m" rounds 6.32...m up to 6.4 instead of correctly rounding it down to 6.3. "4.0 m" comes from subtracting the two given lengths directly, 7 − 3 = 4, instead of subtracting their squares. "10.0 m" comes from adding the two given lengths, 7 + 3 = 10, instead of using Pythagoras' theorem at all.
- (d) 6.7 cm — Volume of the sphere = (4/3)πr³ = (4/3) × 3.14 × 5³ = (4/3) × 3.14 × 125 = 523.33 cm³. Set this equal to the cylinder's volume πr²h: 523.33 = 3.14 × 25 × h = 78.5h. Divide: h = 523.33 ÷ 78.5 = 6.667 cm, which rounds to 6.7 cm. 1.7 cm comes from using the sphere's diameter, 10 cm, as the cylinder's radius: 523.33 ÷ (3.14 × 10²) = 1.7 cm.
- (c) 450 m — To convert km to m, multiply by 1000: 0.45 × 1000 = 450 m. Multiplying by 100 instead of 1000 gives 45 m. Multiplying by 10 000 instead of 1000 gives 4500 m. Not converting at all, just relabelling the number, gives 0.45 m.
- (d) 8.75 cm — The scale factor of the enlargement is 11.2 ÷ 3.2 = 3.5. Applying this to the second line, 2.5 × 3.5 = 8.75 cm. The distractor 10.50 cm comes from adding the difference between the first line's two lengths (11.2 − 3.2 = 8) to the second line's original length, 2.5 + 8 = 10.5. The distractor 0.71 cm comes from using the scale factor the wrong way round, 2.5 × (3.2 ÷ 11.2) = 0.71 (to 2 d.p.). The distractor 8.70 cm comes from directly subtracting 11.2 − 2.5 = 8.7, muddling the two different lines instead of scaling the second one.
- (c) 117° — Co-interior (also called allied) angles between parallel lines add up to 180°. Angle PXY and angle XYS are co-interior angles, so angle PXY + angle XYS = 180°. 180° − 63° = 117°, so angle XYS = 117°. A student who mistakes co-interior angles for alternate angles, which are equal rather than supplementary, answers 63° instead. A student who treats the two angles as complementary, subtracting from 90° instead of 180°, gets 90° − 63° = 27°. A student who assumes the transversal meets the parallel lines at right angles answers 90°.
