- 1.A drone starts at the point (3.5, −2) on a grid measured in metres. It flies by the vector to check a first sensor. The drone then needs to fly in a straight line to reach the point (−1.7, 9) to check a second sensor. Work out the column vector of this second flight.
- 2.A treasure map has a scale of 1 cm to 4 m. A path from the start to a rock is drawn as two straight sections, measuring 3 cm and 2.5 cm. Work out the total real distance from the start to the rock, in metres.
- 3.A ramp rises at 30° to the horizontal. Its sloping surface is 4.8 m long. Safety rules say the vertical rise of a ramp must be no more than 2.5 m. Work out how far below that limit the rise of this ramp is.
- 4.Triangles PQS and RQS share the common side QS. PQ equals RQ, and PS equals RS. Which condition proves that triangle PQS is congruent to triangle RQS?
- 5.Triangle A has a vertex at (1, 2). Triangle A is enlarged, centre (1, 1), to give triangle B, whose corresponding vertex is at (1, 5). Work out the scale factor of the enlargement.
- 6.How many vertices does a cuboid have?
- 7.A tap fills a tank at a rate of 18 litres per minute. The tank holds 0.45 m³. Work out how long the tap takes to fill the tank.
- 8.A parallelogram has an area of 54 cm² and a base of 9 cm. Work out its perpendicular height.
- 9.A hexagonal prism lies on a table. A flat cut is made straight across it, at right angles to its length (so the cut is parallel to the two identical end faces). What shape is the cross-section?
- 10.A square tile has sides of length 6 cm. Work out the area of the tile.
- 11.A polygon has 12 straight sides. What is the mathematical name for this polygon?

- 13.In triangle XYZ, the side opposite vertex X is labelled using the standard lowercase-letter convention. Which label is correct?
- 14.m is the column vector with top number 4 and bottom number 6. n is the column vector with top number −6 and bottom number −9. Given that n = k × m for some number k, work out the value of k.
- 15.A solid pyramid has a square base of side 10 cm and four identical triangular faces. Its apex is directly above the centre of the base, at a vertical height of 12 cm, and the slant height of each triangular face — the distance from the apex to the midpoint of a base edge — is 13 cm. Work out the total surface area of the pyramid.
Answer key
- (a) $\binom{1}{6.5}$ — After the first flight, the drone is at (3.5 − 6.2, −2 + 4.5) = (−2.7, 2.5). The second vector takes it from (−2.7, 2.5) to (−1.7, 9): subtract the coordinates, (−1.7 − (−2.7), 9 − 2.5) = (1, 6.5). The distractor $\binom{−4.4}{6.5}$ comes from treating the drone's position after the first flight as (2.7, 2.5) instead of (−2.7, 2.5), giving −1.7 − 2.7 = −4.4 for the top number. The distractor $\binom{−5.2}{11}$ comes from finding the vector straight from the start point (3.5, −2) to (−1.7, 9), ignoring the first flight altogether. The distractor $\binom{−1}{−6.5}$ comes from subtracting the wrong way round, (−2.7 − (−1.7), 2.5 − 9), which reverses both signs of the correct vector.
- (b) 22 — Method: add the two drawn lengths together first, then apply the scale to the total. Working: 3 cm + 2.5 cm = 5.5 cm; 5.5 cm × 4 = 22 m. A student who answers 10 has only converted one of the two sections (2.5 cm × 4) and forgotten the other. A student who answers 5.5 has added the two drawn lengths but forgotten to apply the scale at all. A student who answers 44 has doubled the correct answer, effectively applying the scale twice. Answer: 22 m.
- (a) 0.1 m — Method: the sloping surface is the hypotenuse and the vertical rise is the side opposite the 30° angle, so rise = 4.8 × sin 30°; then compare that rise with the limit. Working: the exact value of sin 30° is one half, so the rise = 4.8 × 1/2 = 2.4 m. The limit is 2.5 m, and 2.5 − 2.4 = 0.1. Answer: the ramp is 0.1 m below the limit. Working out the rise and stopping there gives 2.4 m, which answers a question that was not asked. Dividing by sin 30° instead of multiplying gives 4.8 ÷ 0.5 = 9.6 and then 9.6 − 2.5 = 7.1 m. Treating sine as proportional to the angle, so that sin 30° is a third of sin 90°, gives 4.8 ÷ 3 = 1.6 and then 2.5 − 1.6 = 0.9 m.
- (d) SSS, using shared side QS — PQ equals RQ and PS equals RS are two given pairs of equal sides, and QS is common to both triangles, so QS equals itself and gives a third pair of equal sides. Three pairs of equal sides is exactly the SSS condition, so 'SSS, using shared side QS' is correct. 'SAS, using the angle at Q' is wrong because no angle is given anywhere in this question; angle PQS and angle RQS are not stated to be equal, and assuming they are would be assuming the very thing being proved. 'Only two pairs of sides — not enough' is wrong because it forgets that the shared side QS is itself a third pair of equal sides. 'Cannot prove — no angle given' is wrong because SSS is one of the four basic congruence conditions and specifically requires no angle at all.
- (b) 4 — The scale factor is the distance from the centre to the image, divided by the distance from the centre to the object: (5 − 1) ÷ (2 − 1) = 4 ÷ 1 = 4. (2.5 comes from dividing the raw y-coordinates, 5 ÷ 2, without first subtracting the centre's coordinate; 3 comes from subtracting the two distances instead of dividing them; 0.25 comes from dividing the distances the wrong way round.)
- (d) 8 — A cuboid is a 3D shape with 6 rectangular faces, 12 edges and 8 vertices (corners). Counting the corners of a cuboid gives 8. A candidate who mixes up vertices with faces answers 6. A candidate who mixes up vertices with edges answers 12. A candidate who counts only the 4 corners of the top face, forgetting the 4 corners of the bottom face, answers 4. The correct number of vertices is 8.
- (b) 25 minutes — Method: a rate in litres per minute can only be used on a volume measured in litres, so convert the tank first and then divide. Working: 1 m³ = 1000 litres, so the tank holds 0.45 × 1000 = 450 litres, and the time is 450 ÷ 18 = 25. Answer: 25 minutes. Using 1 m³ = 100 litres gives 45 ÷ 18 = 2.5 minutes. Using 1 m³ = 1 000 000 litres, which is the factor that turns cubic metres into cubic centimetres, gives 450 000 ÷ 18 = 25 000 minutes. Multiplying by the rate instead of dividing by it gives 450 × 18 = 8100.
- (c) 6 cm — For a parallelogram, area = base × height, so height = area ÷ base = 54 ÷ 9 = 6 cm. 12 cm comes from using the triangle's reverse formula, height = 2 × area ÷ base, which does not apply to a parallelogram. 45 cm comes from subtracting the base from the area, 54 − 9, instead of dividing. 486 cm comes from multiplying the area by the base, 54 × 9, instead of dividing.
- (b) Hexagon — Cutting straight across a prism, at right angles to its length, always gives a cross-section that is the same shape as its end faces. The end faces of a hexagonal prism are hexagons (6-sided), so the cross-section is a hexagon. Choosing Pentagon comes from miscounting the sides of the hexagonal end as five instead of six. Choosing Rectangle comes from cutting along the LENGTH of the prism instead of across it, which gives a rectangular face, not the cross-section asked for. Choosing Triangle comes from confusing a hexagonal prism with a triangular prism.
- (c) 36 cm² — Method: the area of a square is its side length multiplied by itself. Working: 6 × 6 = 36. Answer: 36 cm². The distractors: 24 cm comes from working out the perimeter, 4 × 6, which is a length and not an area; 12 cm comes from doubling the side, 6 × 2, instead of squaring it; 18 cm² comes from halving the product, (6 × 6) ÷ 2, using the rule for the area of a triangle.
- (c) Dodecagon — Deca- means 10, so Decagon names a 10-sided polygon, two sides short of this one, so it is wrong. Hendeca- means 11, one side short of 12, so Hendecagon is also wrong. Icosa- means 20, double the number of sides given here, so Icosagon is wrong too. Dodeca- means 12, so Dodecagon correctly names this polygon.
- (a) $\binom{5}{−6}$ — The vector is (image − original) in each coordinate: (2 − (−3), −1 − 5) = (5, −6). $\binom{−5}{6}$ comes from working out original − image instead of image − original. $\binom{5}{6}$ gets the x-component right but makes a sign error on the y-component. $\binom{−5}{−6}$ gets the y-component right but makes a sign error on the x-component, working out −3 − 2 = −5 instead of 2 − (−3) = 5.
- (c) x — By convention, the side opposite a vertex is labelled with the lowercase version of that vertex's letter, so the side opposite X is labelled x. y is the label for the side opposite Y, not X. z is the label for the side opposite Z, not X. X is the vertex's own uppercase letter — the convention specifically switches to lowercase for the side, so the uppercase letter on its own is not correct.
- (c) −1.5 — Since n = k × m, dividing a number in n by the matching number in m gives k: k = −6 ÷ 4 = −1.5 (check with the bottom numbers: −9 ÷ 6 = −1.5, the same value, confirming n is a scalar multiple of m). 1.5 has the correct size but is missing the negative sign. −10 comes from subtracting the top numbers, −6 − 4, instead of dividing them. −24 comes from multiplying the top numbers, −6 × 4, instead of dividing them.
- (b) 360 cm² — Method: the total surface area is the square base plus the four triangular faces, and the height used for a triangular face is the slant height of 13 cm, not the vertical height of 12 cm. Working: the base is 10 × 10 = 100 cm²; one triangular face is (10 × 13) ÷ 2 = 65 cm², so four faces give 4 × 65 = 260 cm²; the total is 100 + 260 = 360. Answer: 360 cm². The distractors: 260 cm² comes from adding the four triangular faces and leaving out the base; 340 cm² comes from using the vertical height of 12 cm as the height of each triangle, 100 + 4 × 60; 620 cm² comes from working out each face as 10 × 13 without halving, 100 + 4 × 130.
