- (c) 36 cm² — Method: the area of a square is its side length multiplied by itself. Working: 6 × 6 = 36. Answer: 36 cm². The distractors: 24 cm comes from working out the perimeter, 4 × 6, which is a length and not an area; 12 cm comes from doubling the side, 6 × 2, instead of squaring it; 18 cm² comes from halving the product, (6 × 6) ÷ 2, using the rule for the area of a triangle.
- (a) 8,000,000 cm³ — Method: change the edge length into centimetres first and then cube it, because 1 m = 100 cm and a volume needs that conversion applied to all three dimensions. Working: 2 m = 2 × 100 = 200 cm, so the volume is 200 × 200 × 200. 200 × 200 = 40,000 and 40,000 × 200 = 8,000,000. Answer: 8,000,000 cm³. The distractors: 8,000 cm³ comes from converting 2 m to 20 cm and cubing that; 80,000 cm³ comes from cubing in metres to get 8 m³ and then multiplying by 10,000, the conversion factor for an area rather than the 1,000,000 a volume needs; 8 cm³ comes from cubing the 2 without converting at all and simply writing cm³ because the question asked for that unit.
- (b) 10.5 — Method: multiply the drawing length by the scale factor to get the real length. Working: 7 cm × 1.5 = 10.5 m. A student who answers 8.5 has added the scale factor to the drawing length instead of multiplying (7 + 1.5). A student who answers 14 has rounded the scale factor up to 2 before multiplying. A student who answers 3.5 has divided the drawing length by 2 instead of multiplying it by 1.5. Answer: 10.5 m.
- (c) (−35, −55) — Add the three stages component by component to find the drone's position relative to base: (30+(−10)+15, 40+20+(−5)) = (35, 55). The flight back to base is the negative of this vector, reversing both numbers: (−35, −55). (35, 55) is the vector from base to the drone's position — it forgets to reverse direction for the return flight. (−35, 55) only reverses the top number. (35, −55) only reverses the bottom number.
- (a) 180 cm³ — Method: the volume of a right prism is the area of its cross-section multiplied by its length, and the area of a triangle is half the base multiplied by the perpendicular height. Working: the cross-section has area (6 × 5) ÷ 2 = 15 cm², and 15 × 12 = 180. Answer: 180 cm³. The distractors: 360 cm³ comes from taking the cross-section as 6 × 5 = 30 and never halving it, which measures the rectangle around the triangular face rather than the face itself; 66 cm³ comes from adding the base and the perpendicular height and halving, (6 + 5) ÷ 2 = 5.5, which is the trapezium rule used where the triangle rule is needed, and then multiplying by the 12 cm length; 15 cm³ comes from working out the triangular cross-section correctly and stopping there, so the 12 cm length is never used and an area is handed in as a volume.
- (a) 15 km — Multiply the length drawn on the map by the scale: 3 × 5 = 15 km. Choosing 8 km adds the two scale numbers together (3 + 5 = 8) instead of multiplying them. Choosing 30 km comes from misreading the scale as 1 cm : 10 km and doubling the correct answer. Choosing 5 km simply repeats the scale's distance figure and ignores that the road is drawn 3 cm long, not 1 cm.
- (b) SAS — Two pairs of matching sides are equal (AB = DE and BC = EF) and the angle between them is equal (angle ABC = angle DEF), which is exactly the Side-Angle-Side congruence test: SAS. SSS is wrong because only two pairs of sides are given, not three. ASA is wrong because only one angle is given, and it sits between the two sides rather than the side sitting between two angles. RHS is wrong because no right angle is mentioned in either triangle.
- (b) (3, −3) — Subtracting column vectors means subtracting the top numbers and subtracting the bottom numbers, in the order given: top = 5 − 2 = 3, bottom = 1 − 4 = −3, giving (3, −3). A candidate who works out v − u instead of u − v, reversing the order, gets (−3, 3). A candidate who makes a sign error on the bottom number, treating 1 − 4 as 3 instead of −3, gets (3, 3). A candidate who adds the vectors instead of subtracting gets (7, 5). Because the question asks for u − v, not v − u, the correct answer is (3, −3).
- (a) 6 cm — Method: a diameter runs right across a circle through its centre, so it is made of two radii laid end to end, which gives diameter = 2 × radius. Working: the radius is 3 cm, so the diameter is 2 × 3 = 6 cm. Answer: 6 cm. The distractors: 1.5 cm comes from dividing by 2 instead of multiplying by it, which is the relationship applied in the wrong direction; 3 cm comes from copying the radius straight down, treating the two words as names for the same measurement; 5 cm comes from adding 2 to the radius instead of multiplying the radius by 2.
- (d) 1 — An isosceles trapezium has one line of symmetry, running through the midpoints of the two parallel sides. 0 would be true for a scalene trapezium, whose non-parallel sides are unequal, but this trapezium's non-parallel sides are equal, so it is symmetrical. 2 is the number of lines of symmetry of a rectangle, not a trapezium. 4 comes from wrongly applying the 'number of sides equals number of lines of symmetry' rule, which only holds for REGULAR polygons — a trapezium is not regular.
- (a) $\binom{-5}{-4}$ — Method: one translation followed by another is a single translation, and the two vectors are added: top to top, bottom to bottom. Working: across, 4 − 9 = −5; up, −7 + 3 = −4. Answer: $\binom{-5}{-4}$. Subtracting the second vector instead of adding it gives 13 on top and −7 − 3 = −10 underneath. Adding the top numbers correctly but subtracting the bottom ones gives −10 underneath with −5 on top. Adding 4 and 9 as though both were positive and then keeping the minus sign of the larger gives −13 on top.
- (a) 7 — Rearranging F + V − E = 2 gives F = 2 − V + E = 2 − 10 + 15 = 7. A candidate who works out E − V without the +2, giving 15 − 10, answers 5. A candidate who rearranges with a sign error, working out 2 + V − E = 2 + 10 − 15 = −3 and then drops the negative sign, answers 3. A candidate who adds all three numbers together, V + E + 2 = 10 + 15 + 2, answers 27, having used the wrong operation entirely. The correct number of faces is 7.
- (b) 0 — At 0°, the opposite side of the right-angled triangle has shrunk to zero length, so sin 0° = 0. 1 is the value of sin 90° (mixing up the two angles). 1/2 is the value of sin 30°. 'Undefined' is what happens for tan 90°, not sin 0° — sin 0° has a perfectly good exact value.
- (d) 2 — Method: if f is 3 times e, then each part of f equals 3 times the matching part of e. Working: using the bottom numbers, 6 = 3 × k, so k = 2. Answer: k = 2. A candidate who multiplies instead of dividing, working out 6 × 3, gets 18. A candidate who uses the top numbers' ratio instead, 15 ÷ 5, and gives that ratio as k gets 3. A candidate who adds instead of using the multiple relationship, working out 6 + 3, gets 9.
- (a) 32 cm² — Area of a trapezium = 1/2 × (sum of parallel sides) × height = 1/2 × (5 + 11) × 4 = 1/2 × 16 × 4 = 32 cm². (64 cm² comes from forgetting to halve the product; 44 cm² comes from using only the longer parallel side, 11 × 4, instead of both parallel sides; 20 cm² comes from adding all three given lengths together, 5 + 11 + 4, instead of using the area formula.)
