- 1.A rectangle has vertices at (2, 1), (9, 1), (9, 5) and (2, 5). Work out the area of the rectangle.
- 2.p is the column vector with top number 2 and bottom number 3. q is the column vector with top number −1 and bottom number 4. Work out 2p + q, giving your answer as a column vector in the form (top, bottom).
- 3.A designer enlarges a drawing of a model car for a poster. She first enlarges the drawing by a scale factor of 1.5, and then enlarges that result by a further scale factor of 2. On the original drawing, the position of a wheel relative to the front bumper is given by the column vector with top number 4 and bottom number −3, in centimetres. What is the corresponding column vector on the poster, in centimetres?
- 4.A carpenter measures two triangular braces. Brace 1 has a 55° angle, a 65° angle, and, opposite the 55° angle, a side of 8 cm. Brace 2 has matching 55° and 65° angles and, opposite its 55° angle, a side of 8 cm. The carpenter says that because the equal 8 cm side is not between the two equal angles in either brace, he cannot be sure the two braces are the same size. Is the carpenter correct?

- 13.A party hat is in the shape of a cone with a base radius of 6 cm and a slant height of 10 cm. Work out the curved surface area of the party hat. Use π = 3.14 and the formula curved surface area = πrl.
- 14.A sector of a circle has radius 6 cm and angle 150°. Using π = 3.14, work out the perimeter of the sector.
- 15.A surveyor is marking out field ABCD for a new crop. The plan states that side AB is parallel to side DC, but AB and DC are not equal in length, and sides BC and AD are not parallel to each other. Which term correctly describes the shape of field ABCD?
Answer key
- (b) 28 — The width of the rectangle is the difference in x-coordinates, 9 − 2 = 7, and the height is the difference in y-coordinates, 5 − 1 = 4. The area is width × height = 7 × 4 = 28. 22 comes from using the perimeter formula, 2 × (7 + 4), instead of the area formula. 35 comes from multiplying 7 by 5 instead of 4, misreading one of the y-coordinates. 63 comes from multiplying 9 by 7, using an x-coordinate instead of the height.
- (b) (3, 10) — Method: multiply every part of p by 2, then add the matching parts of q. Working: 2p = (4, 6); adding q gives top 4 + (−1) = 3 and bottom 6 + 4 = 10. Answer: 2p + q = (3, 10). A candidate who forgets to double p first, working out p + q instead, gets (1, 7). A candidate who doubles q instead of p, working out p + 2q, gets (0, 11). A candidate who subtracts q instead of adding it, working out 2p − q, gets (5, 2).
- (b) (12, −9) — Two enlargements one after the other combine into a single scale factor: 1.5 × 2 = 3. Multiplying a vector by a scalar means multiplying both the top number and the bottom number by it: top = 4 × 3 = 12, bottom = −3 × 3 = −9, giving (12, −9). A candidate who adds the scale factor to each number instead of multiplying gets (4 + 3, −3 + 3) = (7, 0). A candidate who multiplies the top number but leaves the bottom number unchanged gets (12, −3). A candidate who multiplies the bottom number but leaves the top number unchanged gets (4, −9). The correct column vector for the poster is (12, −9).
- (d) No — third angle is also fixed — Since both braces have angles of 55° and 65°, their third angles must both be 60°, because angles in a triangle sum to 180°. All three angles now match, so the braces have the same shape. Both 8 cm sides lie in the same position relative to those angles — opposite the 55° angle in each brace — so one matching pair of corresponding sides fixes the size as well, exactly as ASA or AAS would. The braces are therefore guaranteed to be congruent and the carpenter is incorrect: 'No — third angle is also fixed' is correct. 'Yes — side must be included' is wrong because the side does not have to lie physically between the two named angles; once the third angle is fixed, a corresponding equal side anywhere is enough. 'No — any two angles enough alone' is wrong because two equal angles with no side length at all would only show the triangles are similar, not congruent. 'Yes — third angle may differ' is wrong because the third angle is fixed at 60° by the angle sum and cannot vary.
- (d) 12 — Method: rearrange F + V − E = 2 so that E is on its own: E = F + V − 2. Working: E = 6 + 8 − 2 = 12. A student who answers 14 has added F and V but forgotten to subtract 2 at all. A student who answers 16 has added 2 instead of subtracting it. A student who answers 10 has subtracted 2 twice by mistake. Answer: 12 edges.
- (c) 18 cm — Method: a square has four equal sides, so the perimeter is 4 × the side length. Working: 4 × 4.5 = 4 × 4 + 4 × 0.5 = 16 + 2 = 18. Answer: 18 cm. The distractors: 9 cm comes from 2 × 4.5, adding only one pair of sides; 16 cm comes from rounding the side length down to 4 cm before multiplying, so the 0.5 cm on each side is lost; 20.25 cm² comes from working out 4.5 × 4.5, which is the area of the tile and carries a squared unit.
- (b) angles on a straight line add up to 180° — 118° and 62° add up to 180°, matching the fact that angles on a straight line always add up to 180° — that is the reason the second angle is 62°. Angles round a point add up to 360° is a different fact, used for angles surrounding a single point, not two angles on a line. Vertically opposite angles are equal would make the second angle 118° too, not 62°. Angles in a triangle add up to 180° is a true fact, but it applies to the three angles inside a triangle, not two angles on a straight line.
- (c) 15/17 — Method: cos θ = adjacent ÷ hypotenuse, so find the hypotenuse with Pythagoras' theorem first and then decide which short side is next to θ. Working: the hypotenuse is √(8² + 15²) = √(64 + 225) = √289 = 17 cm. The angle θ is opposite the 8 cm side, so the side next to it is the 15 cm side, and cos θ = 15 ÷ 17. Answer: 15/17. The distractors: 8/17 is sin θ, opposite over hypotenuse, used in place of the cosine; 8/15 is tan θ, opposite over adjacent; 17/15 comes from writing the cosine ratio upside down, as hypotenuse over adjacent.
- (a) 6 left, 2 up — In a column vector $\binom{x}{y}$, the top number gives the horizontal movement (negative means left) and the bottom number gives the vertical movement (positive means up), so $\binom{-6}{2}$ means 6 units left and 2 units up. '6 right, 2 up' ignores the negative sign on the top number. '2 left, 6 up' swaps the top and bottom numbers. '6 left, 2 down' ignores the positive sign on the bottom number.
- (d) 63.6 — Method: the three angles inside the triangle formed by the two ladders and the ground add up to 180°. Working: 180 − 58.2 − 58.2 = 63.6. Answer: 63.6°. A candidate who assumes the top angle equals the base angles gives 58.2. A candidate who subtracts only one base angle from 180°, working out 180 − 58.2, gets 121.8. A candidate who doubles the base angle instead of subtracting it twice from 180°, working out 2 × 58.2, gets 116.4.
- (b) 320.3 cm³ — Cylinder volume = πr²h = 3.14 × 3² × 10 = 3.14 × 9 × 10 = 282.6 cm³. Cone volume = (1/3)πr²h = (1/3) × 3.14 × 9 × 4 = (1/3) × 113.04 = 37.68 cm³. Total = 282.6 + 37.68 = 320.28 cm³, which rounds to 320.3 cm³.
- (a) 1/2 — cos 0° = 1 and sin 30° = 1/2, so cos 0° − sin 30° = 1 − 1/2 = 1/2. 1 comes from writing down cos 0° alone and forgetting to subtract sin 30°. 3/2 comes from adding the two values instead of subtracting. −1/2 comes from working out sin 30° − cos 0°, the two terms the wrong way round.
- (a) 188.4 cm² — Curved surface area of a cone = πrl. With r = 6 cm, l = 10 cm and π = 3.14, curved surface area = 3.14 × 6 × 10 = 188.4 cm². A student who uses the cylinder's curved surface area formula, 2πrl, instead of the cone's gets 2 × 3.14 × 6 × 10 = 376.8 cm². A student who uses the circle-area formula πr² instead of πrl gets 3.14 × 36 = 113.04 cm². A student who multiplies r × l but leaves out π entirely gets 6 × 10 = 60 cm².
- (c) 27.7 cm — Arc length = (150 ÷ 360) × 2 × 3.14 × 6 = (5 ÷ 12) × 37.68 = 15.7 cm. The perimeter of a sector also includes the two straight radii, so perimeter = 15.7 + 6 + 6 = 27.7 cm. (15.7 cm comes from stopping after the arc length and forgetting the two straight edges; 21.7 cm comes from adding only one radius instead of two; 31.4 cm comes from doubling the arc length instead of adding the two straight edges.)
- (b) trapezium — A quadrilateral with exactly one pair of parallel sides is a trapezium; field ABCD has AB parallel to DC and no other pair of parallel sides, so trapezium is correct. Parallelogram requires BOTH pairs of opposite sides to be parallel, but the plan says only AB and DC are parallel. Rhombus requires all four sides to be equal in length, which is not stated here. A kite is defined by two pairs of adjacent equal sides, not by having a pair of parallel sides, so it does not match this description either.
