- 1.In a class experiment a fair six-sided dice is rolled 60 times and lands on a six 14 times. The whole school then rolls the same fair dice 3000 times. Work out the best estimate of the number of sixes the school should expect.
- 2.A fair coin is flipped again and again. After the first 10 flips there have been 7 heads. After 1000 flips there have been 528 heads. Which statement best describes what these results show?
- 3.A raffle has two independent draws. In the first, a winning ticket is picked at random from 5 red tickets and 3 blue tickets. In the second, a winning number is picked using a fair spinner with 4 equal sections, numbered 1 to 4. Work out the probability that the first winning ticket is blue and the second winning number is greater than 2.
- 4.A seed company tests germination using results from three greenhouses. Greenhouse 1 plants 200 seeds and 172 germinate. Greenhouse 2 plants 150 seeds and 126 germinate. Greenhouse 3 plants 250 seeds and 212 germinate. Using the combined results from all three greenhouses, work out the best estimate of the number of seeds, out of a new batch of 4000 seeds, that would be expected to germinate.
- 5.A four-colour spinner (red, blue, green, yellow) is spun repeatedly, and the relative frequency of landing on green is recorded as the number of spins increases: after 20 spins it is 0.350; after 200 spins it is 0.290; after 2000 spins it is 0.251. Using the result from 2000 spins as the best estimate of the probability, work out the number of times the spinner would be expected to land on green in a further 3000 spins.
- 6.A grower knows that the probability that one of their seeds germinates is 0.6. The grower wants to expect 300 of the seeds to germinate. Work out how many seeds the grower should plant.
- 7.A school trip took 200 pupils to a museum, travelling either by coach or by minibus. A frequency tree records the trip: 150 pupils travelled by coach, split into 90 in Year 8 and the rest in Year 9. All the pupils who travelled by minibus were in Year 8. Work out the total number of Year 8 pupils on the trip.
- 8.At a fair, a game costs £2 to play. The probability of winning the game is 0.15, and each win pays out £10. Amir plays the game 200 times. Work out how much money Amir should expect to lose in total.
- 9.A factory finds that the probability a randomly chosen light bulb is defective is 0.035. In a batch of 4,000 bulbs, work out how many bulbs you would expect to work correctly.
- 10.A phone network sends automatic text alerts to customers. On average, 1,500 alerts are sent each day, and the probability that a customer replies 'STOP' to an alert is 0.18. Work out how many replies of 'STOP' the network should expect over a 30-day month.
- 11.An ordinary six-sided dice, numbered 1 to 6, is rolled 30 times and lands on a 6 seven times. Ravi says the theoretical probability of rolling a 6 and the relative frequency of rolling a 6 in this trial are the same number. Is Ravi right?
- 12.In a game, Zara says the probability of scoring is 3/8, the probability of missing is 5/12 and the probability of a rebound is 1/6, and that these are the only three outcomes. Is Zara correct that her three probabilities are valid?
- 13.A quality inspector examines a sample of 60 items from a production line and finds that 8 are faulty. Using this sample's proportion, work out how many faulty items would be expected in a new batch of 750 items.
- 14.A fair spinner has 6 equal sections, and 2 of the sections are coloured purple. The spinner is spun 180 times. Work out how many times you would expect it to land on purple.
- 15.A drawing pin is dropped many times and lands either point up or point down. The relative frequency of landing point up is recorded as the experiment goes on: after 50 drops it is 0.720, after 200 drops it is 0.665, and after 1000 drops it is 0.638. The pin is to be dropped a further 2000 times. Work out the best estimate of the number of times it will land point up.
