Answer key
- (b) 1.00 litres — Total volume = 350 + 650 = 1000 cm³. Since 1000 cm³ = 1 litre, the smoothie is 1.00 litre. Using only the orange juice's 650 cm³ and converting that gives 0.65 litres, forgetting the mango juice entirely. Using only the mango juice's 350 cm³ gives 0.35 litres, forgetting the orange juice. Adding both volumes correctly to get 1000 cm³ but not converting to litres leaves the answer as 1000.00, which is the volume in the wrong unit.
- (b) £60 — £48 represents 100% − 20% = 80% of the original price. 1% = £48 ÷ 80 = £0.60, so 100% = £0.60 × 100 = £60.
- (b) 12 — Method: work out what one part of the ratio is worth, then multiply that by the number of parts in the other share. Working: the smaller number matches the 2 parts, so 8 ÷ 2 = 4 for one part, and 3 × 4 = 12. Answer: 12. The distractors: 16 comes from multiplying 8 by 2, the ratio part that belongs to the smaller number; 24 comes from multiplying 8 by 3 without first finding the value of one part; 9 comes from adding the difference between the ratio parts, 3 − 2 = 1, to 8.
- (d) 5 — Method: rearrange y = kx to make the constant the subject, then substitute the pair of values given. Working: k = y ÷ x, so k = 10 ÷ 2 = 5. Answer: 5. The distractors: 20 comes from multiplying 10 by 2 instead of dividing, which is the rearrangement done the wrong way round; 12 comes from adding the pair, 10 + 2, treating the relationship as y = x + k; 8 comes from working out 10 − 2, the same additive reading with the operation reversed.
- (c) £480.00 — To decrease by 20%, multiply by 0.80 (100% − 20%). £600 × 0.80 = £480.00. £120.00 comes from working out only the decrease (£600 × 0.20) and forgetting to subtract it from the original value. £580.00 comes from subtracting 20 directly instead of 20% of £600. £720.00 comes from multiplying by 1.20, adding the percentage instead of subtracting it.
- (c) 40° — Method: the three angles of a triangle always add up to 180°, so split 180° into the number of parts shown by the ratio. Working: the ratio 2:3:4 has 2 + 3 + 4 = 9 parts, so one part is 180 ÷ 9 = 20°, and the smallest angle is 2 × 20 = 40°. So the smallest angle is 40°. Distractor 60° is the middle-sized angle, 3 parts. Distractor 80° is the largest angle, 4 parts. Distractor 20° is the value of one part, found correctly but never multiplied by 2.
- (b) 80 — Method: the difference between 40% and 25% of the number is 15% of the number, and that difference is 12. Working: 15% of the number is 12, so 1% of the number is 12 ÷ 15 = 0.8, and the number is 0.8 × 100 = 80. Check: 40% of 80 is 32, 25% of 80 is 20, and 32 − 20 = 12. Answer: 80. The distractors: 30 comes from solving 40% of the number = 12; 48 comes from solving 25% of the number = 12; 15 is the percentage difference written as the answer.
- (b) 3/10 — Total parts = 2 + 3 + 5 = 10. Potatoes make up 3 parts, so the fraction is 3/10.
- (d) 5 — The gradient equals the amount gained divided by the time taken: 15 ÷ 3 = 5 litres per minute.
- (c) 1.6 — The multiplier from tins to pounds is found by dividing the cost by the number of tins: £8 ÷ 5 = 1.6. 0.625 comes from dividing the wrong way round, tins ÷ cost (5 ÷ 8), which is the multiplier from pounds back to tins. 3 comes from subtracting the number of tins from the cost (8 − 5), instead of dividing. 40 comes from multiplying the cost by the number of tins (8 × 5), instead of dividing.
- (d) 50 g — Method: the milk is 4 parts of the ratio, so use the milk to find the value of one part, then read off the chocolate, which is 1 part. Working: one part = 200 ÷ 4 = 50, and the chocolate is one part. Answer: 50 g. The distractors: 40 g comes from treating the 200 g as the total mass of the mixture and splitting it into 1 + 4 = 5 parts; 250 g is the total mass of the finished mixture, the 200 g of milk plus the chocolate, rather than the chocolate on its own; 800 g comes from multiplying 200 by 4 instead of dividing, which scales the milk up rather than down to the chocolate.
- (c) 12 m — Method: the perimeter of a rectangle is twice the sum of the length and the width, so half the perimeter is one length plus one width; split that half using the ratio. Working: half of 64 is 64 ÷ 2 = 32 m, the ratio 5:3 has 5 + 3 = 8 parts, so one part is 32 ÷ 8 = 4 m, and the width is 3 × 4 = 12 m. So the width is 12 m. Distractor 20 m is the length, 5 parts, not the width. Distractor 24 m comes from splitting the whole perimeter, 64 m, into 8 parts and multiplying by 3, forgetting to halve the perimeter first. Distractor 8 m comes from the same slip stopped one step earlier: splitting the whole perimeter into 8 parts, 64 ÷ 8 = 8, and giving that instead of the width.
- (c) 1.2 — Add the parts of the ratio: 6 + 1 = 7. Divide the total amount by the number of parts: 8.4 ÷ 7 = 1.2 litres, which is the value of one part and also the amount of syrup, since syrup is 1 part. (7.2 litres is the amount of water, using 6 parts instead of 1. 1.4 comes from dividing 8.4 by 6 — the water's part of the ratio — instead of dividing by the total number of parts, 7. 0.84 comes from dividing 8.4 by 10 instead of by 7.)
- (c) £624.32 — A 4% rise is a multiplier of 1.04, applied once each year. After year 1: 5000 × 1.04 = 5200. After year 2: 5200 × 1.04 = 5408. After year 3: 5408 × 1.04 = 5624.32. The question asks for the interest, not the value of the account, so take away the amount invested at the start: 5624.32 − 5000 = 624.32. The total interest earned is £624.32.
- (c) 25 — Method: divide the larger number by its ratio part to find the value of one part, then multiply by the smaller number's ratio part. Working: 40 ÷ 8 = 5 (value of one part). Smaller number = 5 × 5 = 25. Wrong options: 64 comes from dividing by the smaller ratio part instead of the larger (40 ÷ 5 × 8); 45 comes from adding the value of one part onto 40 instead of scaling down (40 + 5); 35 comes from subtracting the value of one part from 40 (40 − 5) instead of multiplying it by the smaller ratio part.
