Answer key
- (c) 2:3 — The white paint is 5 − 2 = 3 litres. The ratio of blue paint to white paint is 2 : 3, which has no common factor, so it is already in simplest form. Getting 2 : 5 compares the blue paint to the total amount of shade instead of to the white paint. Getting 3 : 2 has the two parts the wrong way round. Getting 5 : 3 uses the total amount of shade instead of the blue paint as the first part.
- (c) y = 3x — Method: if the ratio y : x is the same in every pair then y is always the same multiple of x, and that multiple is found by dividing a y value by its own x value. Working: 6 ÷ 2 = 3, 15 ÷ 5 = 3 and 24 ÷ 8 = 3, so every y is 3 lots of its x, which gives y = 3x. Answer: y = 3x. The distractors: y = x + 4 comes from subtracting instead of dividing on the first pair, 6 − 2 = 4, and testing it no further; y = x + 16 comes from the same subtraction on the last pair, 24 − 8 = 16; y = x/3 comes from dividing the x value by the y value, 2 ÷ 6, which gives the ratio x : y and not y : x.
- (b) 3/10 — Work out the empty space: 500 − 350 = 150 litres. Form the fraction 150/500; both numbers share a factor of 50, so 150 ÷ 50 = 3 and 500 ÷ 50 = 10, giving 3/10. 7/10 comes from writing the fraction of the tank that is full (350/500), instead of the empty space. 1/2 comes from miscalculating 500 − 350 as 250 instead of 150. 3/7 comes from comparing the empty space with the water held (150/350), instead of with the tank's total capacity.
- (a) 20% — Method: a percentage concentration compares the sugar with the whole solution, so add the two masses to get the mass of solution and then scale the ratio of sugar to solution to a denominator of 100. Working: the solution has a mass of 200 + 50 = 250 g; sugar:solution = 50:250, and scaling to per 100 gives 50 ÷ 250 × 100 = 20, so the ratio is 20:100. Answer: 20%. The distractors: 25% comes from comparing the sugar with the 200 g of water, 50:200, rather than with the whole solution; 80% is the percentage of the solution that is water, 200:250, which answers for the wrong part of the mixture; 0.2% comes from working out 50 ÷ 250 = 0.2 and writing that decimal down as a percentage without multiplying by 100.
- (b) 12 — The difference between the parts of the ratio is 5 − 2 = 3 parts, and this is worth 18. Divide to find one part: 18 ÷ 3 = 6. Cats have 2 parts: 2 × 6 = 12. (30 is the number of dogs, using 5 parts instead of 2. 6 is the value of one part — the number of cats is 2 lots of this, not just one. 9 comes from dividing 18 by 2 and stopping there, instead of dividing by the difference in parts, 3, and then multiplying by 2.)
- (d) 3/5 — Convert both times to minutes: 2 hours 15 minutes = 135 minutes; 3 hours 45 minutes = 225 minutes. Put the train time over the bus time: 135/225. Divide both numbers by their highest common factor, 45: 135÷45 = 3, 225÷45 = 5, giving 3/5. (5/3 comes from writing the times the wrong way round. 2/5 comes from finding the difference, 225 − 135 = 90 minutes, and writing it as a fraction of the bus time, 90/225. 3/8 comes from comparing the train time to the total time for both journeys, 135/360.)
- (d) 8/5 — Two masses can only be compared once they are in the same unit. Since 1 kg is 1000 g, the recipe needs 1200 g. The recipe's mass is being written as a fraction of Dan's mass, so 1200 goes on the top and 750 on the bottom, giving 1200/750. The highest common factor of the two is 150: 1200 ÷ 150 = 8 and 750 ÷ 150 = 5. The fraction is 8/5, which is greater than 1 because the recipe needs more flour than Dan has.
- (a) 50 — Method: 25% is one quarter, so 25% of a quantity is the quantity divided by 4. Working: 200 ÷ 4 = 50. Answer: 50. The distractors: 25 comes from writing the percentage itself as the answer; 100 comes from halving, which is 50% not 25%; 800 comes from multiplying by 4 instead of dividing.
- (c) 2 hours — Method: time = distance ÷ speed, and the units of the speed fix the unit of the time. Working: 120 ÷ 60 = 2, and because the speed is in kilometres per hour the time is in hours. Answer: 2 hours. The distractors: 0.5 hours comes from dividing the speed by the distance, 60 ÷ 120, the division the wrong way round; 2 minutes comes from the correct division but the wrong unit, reading kilometres per hour as kilometres per minute; 180 minutes comes from adding 120 and 60 instead of dividing.
- (b) They are in inverse proportion, because x × y = 60 for both pairs. — Testing inverse proportion means checking that x × y is the same for every pair: 4 × 15 = 60 and 6 × 10 = 60, so the quantities are in inverse proportion. Saying they are not in inverse proportion because x + y differs uses addition, which is not the correct test. Saying they are not in inverse proportion because y ÷ x differs uses the test for direct proportion, and finding that it differs tells us nothing about inverse proportion. Saying x × y = 40 for both pairs is an arithmetic slip: 4 × 15 = 60, not 40.
- (a) 135 minutes — Method: to change hours into minutes, multiply by 60. Working: 2.25 × 60 = 135 minutes. So the film runs for 135 minutes. Distractor 145 minutes comes from reading the '.25' as 25 minutes instead of a quarter of an hour, giving 2 hours 25 minutes. Distractor 225 minutes comes from multiplying by 100 instead of 60. Distractor 150 minutes comes from rounding 2.25 hours to 2.5 hours before converting.
- (b) −3 — Method: the gradient is the change in the vertical value divided by the change in the horizontal value, with both changes taken in the same direction along the line. Working: going from (1, 20) to (5, 8) the change in y is 8 − 20 = −12 and the change in x is 5 − 1 = 4, so the gradient is −12 ÷ 4 = −3. Answer: −3, and the negative sign is expected because the line falls from left to right. The distractors: 3 comes from subtracting the smaller y from the larger, 20 − 8 = 12, while still taking the x values from left to right, which loses the minus sign that says the line falls; −12 is the change in y left undivided by the change in x of 4; −1/3 comes from dividing the change in x by the change in y, 4 ÷ (−12), turning the gradient upside down.
- (b) 13/2 — Put the number of pages in the novel over the number of pages in the comic: 312/48. Divide both numbers by their highest common factor, 24: 312÷24 = 13, 48÷24 = 2, giving 13/2. (2/13 comes from writing the page counts the wrong way round. 11/2 comes from finding the difference in the page counts, 312 − 48 = 264, and writing it as a fraction of the comic's page count, 264/48. 13/15 comes from comparing the novel's page count to the total number of pages in both books, 312/360.)
- (a) 3/2 — Find each average speed: car = 180 ÷ 3 = 60 mph; lorry = 160 ÷ 4 = 40 mph. Put the car's speed over the lorry's speed: 60/40. Divide both numbers by their highest common factor, 20: 60÷20 = 3, 40÷20 = 2, giving 3/2. (2/3 comes from writing the speeds the wrong way round. 9/8 comes from comparing the distances travelled, 180/160, without working out the speeds. 3/4 comes from comparing the times taken, 3/4, instead of the speeds.)
- (d) 1.5 — Method: the length scale factor is the square root of the area scale factor, not the area scale factor itself. Working: the area scale factor is 45 ÷ 20 = 2.25, and the square root of 2.25 is 1.5. Answer: 1.5. Nadia's answer, 2.25, is the AREA scale factor — she never took the square root to get back to the length scale factor. 4.5 comes from doubling the area scale factor instead of taking its square root. 0.67 comes from taking the square root in the wrong direction, finding the scale factor from the larger rug to the smaller rug instead of the other way round.
