Answer key
- (d) 7/3 — The film's length is being described, so it goes on the top, and the documentary's length goes on the bottom: 105/45. The highest common factor of 105 and 45 is 15, so divide both parts by it: 105 ÷ 15 = 7 and 45 ÷ 15 = 3. The fraction is 7/3. Because the film is longer than the documentary the fraction is greater than 1, which is exactly what a top-heavy fraction records.
- (a) 100 — The difference between the parts of the ratio is 7 − 3 = 4 parts, and this is worth 40 beads. Divide to find one part: 40 ÷ 4 = 10. The total number of parts is 7 + 3 = 10, so the total number of beads is 10 × 10 = 100. (40 is just the given difference between gold and silver, not the total. 70 is the number of gold beads only, using 7 parts. 30 is the number of silver beads only, using 3 parts.)
- (a) x = 6, y = 27 — Method: for direct proportion, y = kx, so k = y ÷ x. Working: k = 9 ÷ 2 = 4.5. At x = 6: y = 4.5 × 6 = 27. Wrong options: x = 6, y = 13 comes from adding the change in x (4) onto y instead of scaling by k; x = 6, y = 3 comes from treating the relationship as inverse proportion (k = 2 × 9 = 18, then y = 18 ÷ 6 = 3); x = 6, y = 24 comes from rounding the constant of proportionality down to 4 instead of using 4.5.
- (c) 48 mm — Method: extension = k × force, where k = extension ÷ force. Working: k = 12 ÷ 5 = 2.4 mm per N. At 20 N: extension = 2.4 × 20 = 48 mm. Wrong options: 32 mm comes from adding the extension and force numbers instead of scaling (12 + 20); 3 mm comes from treating the relationship as inverse proportion (12 × 5 ÷ 20); 36 mm comes from using an incorrect scale factor of 3 between the forces instead of the correct factor of 4 (20 ÷ 5).
- (c) 120 km/h — Method: for a fixed distance the average speed multiplied by the time is constant, and that constant is the distance, so divide the distance by the new time. Working: speed × time = 240, so in 2 hours the speed needed is 240 ÷ 2 = 120 km/h. Answer: 120 km/h. The distractors: 80 km/h is the average speed of the original journey, 240 ÷ 3, which answers for the 3-hour timing rather than the 2-hour one; 160 km/h comes from halving the 3 hours to 1.5 hours and working out 240 ÷ 1.5, instead of using the 2 hours the question gives; 480 km/h comes from multiplying the distance by the 2 hours rather than dividing by it.
- (b) 10000 cm² — Method: an area conversion factor is the square of the length conversion factor, because both sides of the square are scaled. Working: a square metre is a square of side 100 cm, so its area is 100 × 100 = 10000 cm². Answer: 10000 cm². The distractors: 100 cm² comes from using the length factor without squaring it; 200 cm² comes from doubling the length factor instead of squaring it; 1000000 cm² comes from cubing the factor, which is the conversion for a volume, not an area.
- (d) 60 km/h — Method: use the formula v = d ÷ t with the distance and time given. Working: 180 ÷ 3 = 60 km/h. So the average speed is 60 km/h. Distractor 540 km/h comes from multiplying the distance and time instead of dividing. Distractor 90 km/h comes from dividing by 2 instead of 3. Distractor 18 km/h comes from dividing by 10 instead of 3, a decimal-point slip.
- (c) 6.00 m — Method: the ratio of height to shadow length is the same for both objects. Working: road sign height ÷ shadow = 3 ÷ 5 = 0.6. Lamppost height = 0.6 × 10 = 6.00 m. Wrong options: 16.67 m comes from inverting the ratio, using shadow ÷ height instead of height ÷ shadow (10 × 5 ÷ 3); 8.00 m comes from adding the difference between the two shadow lengths to the road sign's height instead of scaling (3 + (10 − 5)); 1.50 m comes from multiplying by the ratio of the two shadow lengths the wrong way round (3 × 5 ÷ 10).
- (c) 20% — Method: percentage increase = (increase ÷ original) × 100. Working: the increase is 54 − 45 = 9, and 9 ÷ 45 = 0.2, so the percentage increase is 0.2 × 100 = 20. Answer: 20%. The distractors: 9% comes from writing the actual increase as a percentage; 16.7% comes from dividing by the new value 54 instead of the original 45; 120% is the multiplier 1.2 written as a change rather than the change itself.
- (d) 1:12 — Write the ratio model : real bus using the numbers in the question: 5 : 60. Divide both parts by their highest common factor, 5: 5÷5 = 1, 60÷5 = 12, giving 1 : 12. (12:1 comes from writing the ratio the wrong way round, real bus : model. 1:55 comes from dividing the first part correctly, 5÷5 = 1, but subtracting on the second part, 60 − 5 = 55, instead of dividing it by 5 as well. 5:12 comes from dividing only the real length by 5 and leaving the model length unchanged — both parts of a ratio must be divided by the same number.)
- (a) 3 hours — Method: for a fixed pool the rate of flow multiplied by the time taken is constant, so multiplying the rate by a factor divides the time by that same factor. Working: tap B's rate is 2 times tap A's rate, so tap B's time is 6 ÷ 2 = 3 hours. Answer: 3 hours. The distractors: 12 hours comes from multiplying the time by 2 as well, which treats the time as directly proportional to the rate and has the faster tap taking longer; 4 hours comes from reading ‘twice as fast’ additively, as two hours quicker, and working out 6 − 2 instead of scaling the time by a factor of 2; 1.5 hours comes from applying the factor of 2 twice, halving 6 to 3 and then halving again.
- (a) 1000m — Method: kilograms are a smaller unit than tonnes, so change tonnes into kilograms by multiplying by 1000. Working: m tonnes = m × 1000 kg = 1000m kg. So the expression is 1000m. Distractor m/1000 comes from dividing by 1000 instead of multiplying, which would make the number of kilograms smaller than the number of tonnes, the wrong way round. Distractor 1000 + m comes from adding the conversion factor instead of multiplying by it. Distractor m − 1000 comes from subtracting the conversion factor instead of multiplying by it.
- (b) 1 : 500 — smallest real distance per cm (5 m), most detail — Method: compare what one centimetre represents in real life for each scale — the scale with the smallest real distance per cm shows the most detail. Working: for 1 : 500, 1 cm represents 500 cm (5 m); for 1 : 5000, 1 cm represents 50 m; for 1 : 50 000, 1 cm represents 500 m. Since 5 m is the smallest, 1 : 500 shows the most detail. Wrong options: '1 : 50 000 — covers the largest real area' wrongly assumes covering more area means more detail, when it is the opposite; '1 : 5000 — the middle value' wrongly assumes the middle scale is automatically the most balanced; '1 : 500 — covers the largest real distance' picks the correct scale but states an incorrect fact, since 1 : 500 actually covers the smallest real distance per cm.
- (d) 3/16 — Convert 4 kg to grams: 4 kg = 4000 g. Form the fraction 750/4000. Both numbers share a factor of 250, so 750 ÷ 250 = 3 and 4000 ÷ 250 = 16, giving 3/16. 16/3 comes from writing the fraction the wrong way round, as 4000/750. 15/8 comes from converting 4 kg using ×100 instead of ×1000, treating it as 400 g, then simplifying 750/400. 3/20 comes from dividing 750 by 250 correctly to get 3, but dividing 4000 by 200 instead of 250, giving 3/20.
- (b) 1:200000 — '1 cm represents 2 km' means 1 cm on the map is 2 km in real life. Convert 2 km into centimetres, the same unit as the 1: 2 km = 2000 m = 200 000 cm. So the scale is 1 : 200 000. Converting only as far as metres gives 1 : 2000 — the conversion to centimetres was never finished. Losing a zero in the conversion gives 1 : 20 000, ten times too small. Writing 1 : 2 without converting units at all compares 1 cm to 2 km directly, which is not a valid ratio since the units do not match.
