Answer key
- (c) 5 m — The scale 1 : 100 means 1 cm on the map represents 100 cm in real life. The path is 5 cm on the map, so the real length is 5 × 100 = 500 cm. Convert to metres: 500 cm = 5 m. Dividing instead of multiplying, 5 ÷ 100 = 0.05, gives 0.05 m — the scale must be used to make the real object bigger than the map, not smaller. Leaving the answer as 500 without converting to metres and calling it 500 m mistakes centimetres for metres. Using a scale of 1 : 1000 instead of the given 1 : 100 gives 5 × 1000 = 5000 cm = 50 m, ten times too large.
- (a) 1.5 km — Multiply the map length by the scale: 6 × 25 000 = 150 000 cm. Convert to kilometres: 150 000 cm = 1.5 km. Dividing by only 1000 instead of the full conversion when changing units gives 150 km, a hundred times too large. Misreading the scale as 1 : 2500 instead of 1 : 25 000 gives 6 × 2500 = 15 000 cm = 0.15 km, a hundred times too small. Leaving the answer as 150 000 without converting units at all, and calling it 150 000 km, mistakes centimetres for kilometres completely.
- (d) 3 : 5 — Simplify the area ratio: 18 : 50 divides by 2 to give 9 : 25. Areas scale with the square of the length ratio, so take the square root of each part: the square root of 9 is 3, and the square root of 25 is 5, giving a side length ratio of 3 : 5. Giving 5 : 3 has the ratio the right way round for larger to smaller, not smaller to larger. Giving 9 : 25 is the simplified area ratio, without square-rooting it. Giving 18 : 50 is the area ratio before it has even been simplified.
- (a) 18 — Method: write both numbers with the same multiplier, turn the second ratio into an equation by cross-multiplying, solve for the multiplier and then build A from it. Working: let A = 3k and B = 5k, so 3k : (5k + 6) = 1 : 2; cross-multiplying gives 2 × 3k = 5k + 6, so 6k = 5k + 6 and k = 6; A = 3 × 6 = 18. Answer: 18, and the check works, because B = 30, B + 6 = 36 and 18:36 = 1:2. The distractors: 9 comes from reading the 6 as the difference between the two numbers — 5 − 3 = 2 parts, so one part is 3 and A is 3 × 3 — but the 6 is added to B, it is not the gap between A and B; 6 comes from solving A : (A + 6) = 1 : 2, adding the 6 to A instead of to B; 30 is the value of B, found from the correct multiplier but given in place of A.
- (d) 20 km/h — Method: average speed = total distance ÷ total time, with the time written in hours. Working: 1 hour 30 minutes = 1.5 hours, and 30 ÷ 1.5 = 20. Answer: 20 km/h. The distractors: 45 km/h comes from multiplying 30 by 1.5 instead of dividing; 15 km/h comes from dividing by 2, as if the ride had taken 2 hours; 30 km/h comes from dividing by the whole hour only and ignoring the extra 30 minutes.
- (d) 500 ml — Varnish covers a surface, so the amount needed scales with the area scale factor, which is the square of the length scale factor. The length scale factor is 50 ÷ 20 = 2.5, so the area scale factor is 2.5 × 2.5 = 6.25. The varnish needed for the larger statue is 80 × 6.25 = 500 ml. Using 2.5 on its own would scale a length, not a surface.
- (a) 3 hours — Method: for a fixed pool the rate of flow multiplied by the time taken is constant, so multiplying the rate by a factor divides the time by that same factor. Working: tap B's rate is 2 times tap A's rate, so tap B's time is 6 ÷ 2 = 3 hours. Answer: 3 hours. The distractors: 12 hours comes from multiplying the time by 2 as well, which treats the time as directly proportional to the rate and has the faster tap taking longer; 4 hours comes from reading ‘twice as fast’ additively, as two hours quicker, and working out 6 − 2 instead of scaling the time by a factor of 2; 1.5 hours comes from applying the factor of 2 twice, halving 6 to 3 and then halving again.
- (a) 0.8 — The gradient of a line through the origin is the y-coordinate of a point divided by its x-coordinate: 20 ÷ 25 = 0.8. Choosing 1.25 comes from dividing the wrong way round, 25 ÷ 20. Choosing 20 comes from reading off the cost at the point instead of dividing it by the number of miles. Choosing 5 comes from subtracting the two coordinates (25 − 20) instead of dividing them.
- (c) 150% — Percentage = (180,000 ÷ 120,000) × 100 = 150%.
- (c) 21% — Method: an increase of 10% is a multiplier of 1.1, and two successive increases are found by multiplying the multipliers. Working: 1.1 × 1.1 = 1.21, so the rent is 121% of the original, which is an increase of 21%. Answer: 21%. The distractors: 20% comes from adding the two percentages, which ignores that the second 10% is taken of a larger amount; 121% is the multiplier written as the change rather than the change itself; 11% comes from slipping in the multiplication and getting 1.11 instead of 1.21.
- (a) 12 — Speed × time is constant: k = 20 × 15 = 300. At 25 pages per minute, the time is 300 ÷ 25 = 12 minutes. Getting 18.75 comes from treating speed and time as directly proportional and working out 15 × 25 ÷ 20 instead of dividing k by the new speed. Getting 20 comes from adding the increase in speed (25 − 20 = 5) onto the time (15 + 5 = 20). Getting 10 comes from subtracting that same increase in speed from the time (15 − 5 = 10).
- (b) 24 — Method: let one part of the ratio be worth x, write both groups in terms of x, and use the fact that the two groups end up equal. Working: the boys are 3x and the girls are 4x; after the 6 boys join, 3x + 6 = 4x, so x = 6; the girls are 4 parts, so 4 × 6 = 24. Answer: 24 girls. The distractors: 18 is the number of boys before the 6 join, which is 3 × 6; 30 comes from adding the 6 new members to the girls as well as to the boys; 42 is the total number of members in the choir before the 6 boys join, the 18 boys and the girls together.
- (b) 4:9 — 4 : 9 has no common factor other than 1, so it is already in its simplest form. 6 : 8 can be divided by 2 to give 3 : 4, so it is not simplest. 10 : 15 can be divided by 5 to give 2 : 3, so it is not simplest. 7 : 14 can be divided by 7 to give 1 : 2, so it is not simplest.
- (d) d ÷ t — Average speed = distance ÷ time, so the expression is d ÷ t. Writing t ÷ d inverts the formula, giving the time per kilometre instead of the speed. Writing d × t confuses speed with the formula for distance travelled (distance = speed × time) used the wrong way round. Writing d + t treats the relationship as additive instead of using division.
- (d) £24 — Add the parts of the ratio: 2 + 3 + 7 = 12. Find the value of one part: £96 ÷ 12 = £8. Cara's share is 3 parts: 3 × £8 = £24. (£16 is Ben's share, 2 × £8, not Cara's. £56 is Dev's share, 7 × £8, not Cara's. £28.80 comes from wrongly adding the ratio parts as 10 instead of 12, giving one part = £9.60.)
