Answer key
- (d) 4/7 — Put the tomato plant's height over the sunflower's height: 80/140. Divide both numbers by their highest common factor, 20: 80÷20 = 4, 140÷20 = 7, giving 4/7. (7/4 comes from writing the heights the wrong way round. 3/7 comes from finding the difference in the heights, 140 − 80 = 60 cm, and writing it as a fraction of the sunflower's height, 60/140. 4/11 comes from comparing the tomato plant's height to the total height of both plants, 80/220.)
- (c) 4/5 — Find 20% of £45: 10% is £4.50, so 20% is £9. The sale price is £45 − £9 = £36. Form the fraction 36/45; both numbers share a factor of 9, so 36 ÷ 9 = 4 and 45 ÷ 9 = 5, giving 4/5. 1/5 comes from writing the discount itself as a fraction of the normal price (9/45), instead of the sale price. 6/5 comes from adding the 20% instead of subtracting it, giving a sale price of £54, then 54/45 = 6/5. 5/9 comes from treating 'reduced by 20%' as 'reduced by £20', giving a sale price of £25, then 25/45 = 5/9.
- (c) £624.32 — A 4% rise is a multiplier of 1.04, applied once each year. After year 1: 5000 × 1.04 = 5200. After year 2: 5200 × 1.04 = 5408. After year 3: 5408 × 1.04 = 5624.32. The question asks for the interest, not the value of the account, so take away the amount invested at the start: 5624.32 − 5000 = 624.32. The total interest earned is £624.32.
- (b) 35 N/m² — Pressure = force ÷ area. 84 ÷ 2.4 = 35 N/m². 201.6 N/m² comes from multiplying the force by the area instead of dividing (84 × 2.4). 81.6 N/m² comes from subtracting the area from the force (84 − 2.4) instead of dividing. 0.03 N/m² comes from dividing the area by the force instead of the force by the area (2.4 ÷ 84).
- (b) 32p — £3.20 is 320p, and 1 kg is 1000 g, which is 10 lots of 100 g. Divide the price in pence by 10: 320 ÷ 10 = 32p per 100 g. Dividing 320 by 100 instead of 10 gives 3.2p, using the wrong number of hundred-grams in a kilogram. Multiplying 320 by 10 instead of dividing gives 3200p. Forgetting to convert pounds to pence and dividing 3.20 by 10 gives 0.32, which is still in pounds rather than pence. Rice costs 32p per 100 g.
- (d) 13/10 — First find the selling price: £150 + £45 = £195. Put the selling price over the cost price: 195/150. Divide both numbers by their highest common factor, 15: 195÷15 = 13, 150÷15 = 10, giving 13/10. (10/13 comes from writing the prices the wrong way round. 3/10 is just the profit written as a fraction of the cost price, 45/150, not the selling price. 13/23 comes from comparing the selling price to the combined total of the cost price and the selling price, 195/345.)
- (d) £270 — Method: the £90 is a difference between two shares, so turn it into a number of parts before finding the value of one part. Working: the largest share is 3 parts and the smallest is 1 part, so the difference is 3 − 1 = 2 parts and 2 parts are worth £90; one part = £90 ÷ 2 = £45; the whole amount is 1 + 2 + 3 = 6 parts, so 6 × £45 = £270. Answer: £270. The distractors: £540 comes from treating the £90 as the value of one part and multiplying it by the 6 parts; £180 comes from finding the £45 correctly but adding only the 1-part and 3-part shares and forgetting the middle share; £135 comes from multiplying £45 by 3 and giving the largest share instead of the total.
- (a) 35/32 — Work out each weekly total first. Last week: 5 × 7 = 35 hours. This week: 4 × 8 = 32 hours. Last week's total is being written as a fraction of this week's total, so last week goes on the top and this week goes on the bottom, giving 35/32. The two totals share no common factor, so the fraction cannot be cancelled. It is greater than 1, which says that Priya worked more hours last week than this week.
- (b) 8 — Method: the gradient of a straight line is the change in the vertical value divided by the change in the horizontal value between two points on the line. Working: from the origin (0, 0) to (5, 40) the vertical change is 40 − 0 = 40 and the horizontal change is 5 − 0 = 5, so the gradient is 40 ÷ 5 = 8, which here means a cost of £8 for each litre. Answer: 8. The distractors: 0.125 comes from dividing the horizontal change by the vertical change, 5 ÷ 40, which gives litres per pound instead of the gradient; 40 comes from reading off the vertical value of the point and calling it the gradient, ignoring the 5 litres it took to reach that cost; 35 comes from subtracting the two coordinates, 40 − 5, instead of dividing them.
- (d) £120 — Method: add the parts of the ratio, divide the prize by the number of parts to find the value of one part, then multiply by the parts in the share asked for. Working: 2 + 3 + 4 = 9 parts, £360 ÷ 9 = £40 for one part, and the share asked for is 3 parts, so 3 × £40 = £120. Answer: £120. The distractors: £40 is the value of one part rather than of a 3-part share; £80 is the 2-part share; £160 is the 4-part share, which is what a candidate reaches by picking the largest share instead of the one the question names.
- (c) 3 : 4 — Method: a fraction compares a part with the whole, while this ratio compares one part with the other part, so find the fraction that is black before writing the ratio. Working: if 3/7 are blue then the black pens make up 7/7 − 3/7 = 4/7 of the box, so out of every 7 pens 3 are blue and 4 are black, and blue : black = 3 : 4. Answer: 3 : 4. The distractors: 3 : 7 comes from reading the numerator and the denominator of 3/7 straight off as the two parts, which compares the blue pens with the whole box rather than with the black pens; 4 : 3 comes from writing the black pens before the blue pens, reversing the order asked for; 4 : 7 is the same numerator-and-denominator reading applied to the black fraction 4/7, again comparing a part with the whole box.
- (a) 10 — Method: two equal fractions can be rearranged by cross-multiplying, multiplying each numerator by the other denominator. Working: 4 × 5 = 2 × x, so 2x = 20 and x = 20 ÷ 2 = 10. Answer: 10. The distractors: 20 comes from cross-multiplying to 4 × 5 = 20 and stopping there, without dividing by the 2; 8 comes from multiplying the two numerators, 4 × 2; 2.5 comes from working only with the right-hand fraction, 5 ÷ 2, and ignoring the 4.
- (b) 4/5 — Write the mass of the beans over the mass of the soup: 400/500. Divide the top and bottom by 100 to get 4/5. Choosing 5/4 comes from writing the soup's mass over the beans' mass, the wrong way round. Choosing 1/5 comes from finding the difference in mass (500 − 400 = 100) and writing that over the mass of the soup, instead of using the mass of the beans. Choosing 5/9 comes from writing the mass of the soup over the total mass of both tins (500 out of 900), instead of over the mass of the beans.
- (c) 150% — Percentage = (180,000 ÷ 120,000) × 100 = 150%.
- (c) 3 hours — Time = distance ÷ speed, so 210 ÷ 70 = 3 hours. Working out 210 − 70 = 140 subtracts the speed from the distance instead of dividing. Working out 210 + 70 = 280 adds the two values together, which does not give a time. Working out 210 × 70 = 14700 multiplies distance and speed together instead of dividing. The journey takes 3 hours.
