Answer key
- (c) 4/5 — Find 20% of £45: 10% is £4.50, so 20% is £9. The sale price is £45 − £9 = £36. Form the fraction 36/45; both numbers share a factor of 9, so 36 ÷ 9 = 4 and 45 ÷ 9 = 5, giving 4/5. 1/5 comes from writing the discount itself as a fraction of the normal price (9/45), instead of the sale price. 6/5 comes from adding the 20% instead of subtracting it, giving a sale price of £54, then 54/45 = 6/5. 5/9 comes from treating 'reduced by 20%' as 'reduced by £20', giving a sale price of £25, then 25/45 = 5/9.
- (d) 2:5 — The ratio of the y-values equals the ratio of the coefficients of x, since x cancels: 2x : 5x = 2 : 5.
- (c) £21 — Method: the two amounts are in the same ratio as 5:3, so write 5:3 = 35:x, find the value of one part and then take the number of parts asked for. Working: Harry's £35 is 5 parts, so one part is £35 ÷ 5 = £7; Isla has 3 parts, so 3 × £7 = £21. Answer: £21. The distractors: £7 is the value of a single part, given as Isla's share instead of being multiplied by the 3 parts she has; £28 comes from finding one part correctly and then working out £35 − £7, subtracting one part from Harry's money instead of taking three parts; £33 comes from treating the ratio additively — the parts differ by 5 − 3 = 2, so £2 is taken off Harry's £35, but a ratio compares by multiplying, not by subtracting.
- (c) 150% — Percentage = (180,000 ÷ 120,000) × 100 = 150%.
- (d) 4/3 — The amount of yellow paint is 0.75 times the amount of blue paint. As a fraction, 0.75 = 3/4, so yellow = 3/4 of blue. To write blue as a fraction of yellow, use the reciprocal: flip 3/4 to get 4/3. 3/4 comes from keeping the original fraction without inverting it. 1/4 comes from computing 1 − 3/4 = 1/4, which is not how a fraction reverses. 40/3 comes from converting 0.75 to a fraction as 75/1000 = 3/40 (misplacing the decimal point), then inverting that.
- (b) 75 cm² — Areas of similar shapes are in the ratio of the squares of their lengths. Squaring both parts of 3 : 5 gives an area ratio of 9 : 25, so the larger area is 25/9 of the smaller one. Working with the smaller area: 27 ÷ 9 = 3, and 3 × 25 = 75. The area of the larger rectangle is 75 cm².
- (d) 3 : 8 — Multiply both parts by 4 to clear the decimal: 0.75 × 4 = 3 and 2 × 4 = 8, giving 3 : 8, which has no common factor other than 1. Giving 75 : 200 multiplies by 100 instead of 4, and has not then been simplified down to 3 : 8. Giving 0.75 : 2 has not been converted into whole numbers at all. Giving 3 : 2 converts the first part correctly but leaves the second part unscaled.
- (d) d ÷ t — Average speed = distance ÷ time, so the expression is d ÷ t. Writing t ÷ d inverts the formula, giving the time per kilometre instead of the speed. Writing d × t confuses speed with the formula for distance travelled (distance = speed × time) used the wrong way round. Writing d + t treats the relationship as additive instead of using division.
- (b) 1:25 — Write the ratio time : volume using the numbers in the question: 8 : 200. Divide both parts by their highest common factor, 8, to give 1 : 25. (25:1 comes from writing the ratio the wrong way round, volume : time. 8:25 comes from dividing only the volume by 8 and leaving the time unchanged. 25:8 is that same mistake written the wrong way round.)
- (a) 18 — Method: write both numbers with the same multiplier, turn the second ratio into an equation by cross-multiplying, solve for the multiplier and then build A from it. Working: let A = 3k and B = 5k, so 3k : (5k + 6) = 1 : 2; cross-multiplying gives 2 × 3k = 5k + 6, so 6k = 5k + 6 and k = 6; A = 3 × 6 = 18. Answer: 18, and the check works, because B = 30, B + 6 = 36 and 18:36 = 1:2. The distractors: 9 comes from reading the 6 as the difference between the two numbers — 5 − 3 = 2 parts, so one part is 3 and A is 3 × 3 — but the 6 is added to B, it is not the gap between A and B; 6 comes from solving A : (A + 6) = 1 : 2, adding the 6 to A instead of to B; 30 is the value of B, found from the correct multiplier but given in place of A.
- (d) 90 cm — Method: scale each dimension by the scale factor, then find the perimeter. Working: model height = 240 ÷ 8 = 30 cm; model width = 120 ÷ 8 = 15 cm. Perimeter = 2 × (30 + 15) = 90 cm. Wrong options: 11.25 cm comes from squaring the scale factor as if finding an area (720 ÷ 64); 510 cm comes from scaling only one dimension and leaving the other at full size; 720 cm comes from finding the real perimeter (2 × (240 + 120)) but forgetting to scale it down at all.
- (b) £52 — Method: the difference between the two ratio numbers tells you how many parts the £39 difference represents. Working: the difference in parts is 7 − 4 = 3, and this represents £39, so one part is £39 ÷ 3 = £13. Josh's savings are 4 × £13 = £52. So Josh has £52. Distractor £91 is Mia's savings, not Josh's. Distractor £39 comes from using the given £39 difference as the final answer, without scaling it to Josh's number of parts. Distractor £13 is the value of one part, found correctly but never multiplied by 4.
- (a) 15:1 — Write the ratio distance : petrol using the numbers in the question: 90 : 6. Divide both parts by their highest common factor, 6, to give 15 : 1. (1:15 comes from writing the ratio the wrong way round, petrol : distance. 5:2 comes from dividing only the distance by 6 and leaving the 6 litres unchanged, giving 15:6, which does simplify to 5:2 — the error is the step before, because both parts of a ratio must be divided by the same number. 14:1 comes from subtracting at the first step instead of dividing, 90 − 6 = 84, and then writing 84 : 6 and dividing both parts by 6 to get 14 : 1; subtracting has no part in simplifying a ratio.)
- (d) 3:8 — Convert 2 hours to minutes: 2 hours = 120 minutes. The ratio is 45 : 120. The highest common factor of 45 and 120 is 15. Divide both parts by 15: 45 ÷ 15 = 3 and 120 ÷ 15 = 8, giving 3 : 8. Leaving the hours unconverted gives 45 : 2 — the units on each side are different, so this does not compare like with like. Dividing by 5 instead of 15 gives 9 : 24, which still shares a common factor of 3, so it is not fully simplified. Swapping the order gives 8 : 3, hours to minutes instead of minutes to hours.
- (b) £60 — £48 represents 100% − 20% = 80% of the original price. 1% = £48 ÷ 80 = £0.60, so 100% = £0.60 × 100 = £60.
