Answer key
- (a) 6 — Method: for inverse proportion the product xy is the same for every pair, so find that product and use it to work back to the missing value. Working: xy = 2 × 15 = 30, so when x = 5 the equation 5y = 30 gives y = 30 ÷ 5 = 6. Answer: 6. The distractors: 37.5 comes from treating the pair as direct proportion and scaling y up with x, 15 × 5 ÷ 2, although in inverse proportion y falls as x rises; 30 is the constant product itself, given as a value of y rather than used to find one; 12 comes from additive thinking — x rises by 3, so 3 is taken off y — which would make the two quantities differ by a constant instead of multiplying to one.
- (c) 54 — Method: y = kx, so k = y ÷ x. Working: k = 18 ÷ 5 = 3.6. At x = 15: y = 3.6 × 15 = 54. Wrong options: 28 comes from adding the change in x (10) onto y instead of scaling; 6 comes from treating the relationship as inverse proportion (k = 5 × 18 = 90, then y = 90 ÷ 15 = 6); 60 comes from rounding the constant up to 4 instead of using 3.6.
- (a) 3/5 — The quantity being described goes on the top of the fraction and the quantity it is compared with goes on the bottom. Here the potatoes are written as a fraction of the carrots, so the mass of the potatoes is the numerator and the mass of the carrots is the denominator. Both masses are already in kilograms, so no conversion is needed. This gives 3/5, and since 3 and 5 share no common factor it is already in its simplest form.
- (d) The candle's height decreases by 0.3 cm every minute. — A negative gradient means the quantity on the vertical axis decreases as the quantity on the horizontal axis increases. The size of the gradient, 0.3, gives the amount of decrease per minute.
- (b) 4/3 — Work out the number of bananas: 3/4 of 16 = 12. Form the fraction 16/12 (apples over bananas); both numbers share a factor of 4, so 16 ÷ 4 = 4 and 12 ÷ 4 = 3, giving 4/3. 3/4 comes from giving the fraction that was already stated in the question (bananas as a fraction of apples), instead of inverting it. 4/1 comes from reading '3/4 of the apples' as 'the apples reduced by 3/4', giving only 4 bananas, then 16/4 = 4. 4/7 comes from comparing the apples with the total number of pieces of fruit (16/28), instead of with the bananas alone.
- (a) 5 — Pressure = force ÷ area = 20 ÷ 4 = 5 pascals. Getting 80 comes from multiplying the force and area instead of dividing. Getting 16 comes from subtracting the area from the force (20 − 4 = 16) instead of dividing. Getting 24 comes from adding the force and area (20 + 4 = 24) instead of dividing.
- (d) 4:1 — Write the ratio online : in-store using the numbers in the question: 180 : 45. Divide both parts by their highest common factor, 45, to give 4 : 1. (1:4 comes from writing the ratio the wrong way round, in-store : online. 3:1 comes from subtracting the in-store orders from the online orders, 180 − 45 = 135, and comparing that to the in-store orders, 135:45, instead of dividing. 4:5 comes from comparing the online orders to the total number of orders, 180:225.)
- (b) 5:8 — The mix has 5 parts sand and 3 parts cement, so 5 + 3 = 8 parts in total. Sand to total is 5 : 8, and since the highest common factor of 5 and 8 is 1, this is already in its simplest form. Giving 5 : 3 answers sand to cement, not sand to the total mix. Giving 3 : 8 is cement to total, the wrong part of the mix. Giving 8 : 5 has the total and the sand swapped round.
- (b) 3 : 5 — The highest common factor of 27 and 45 is 9. Divide both parts by 9: 27 ÷ 9 = 3 and 45 ÷ 9 = 5, giving 3 : 5. Giving 9 : 15 divides by 3, a common factor but not the highest one, so it is not yet in simplest form. Giving 5 : 3 swaps the order of the two parts. Giving 27 : 45 has not been simplified at all.
- (d) 3200 × 0.88³ — A fall of 12% leaves 88% of the value, because 100 − 12 = 88, and 88% written as a decimal multiplier is 0.88. Decay repeats that multiplier once for each year, so over 3 years it is applied three times: 0.88 × 0.88 × 0.88, which is written 0.88³. The calculation is therefore 3200 × 0.88³. Adding the percentages to make a single fall of 36% would be wrong, because each year's fall is taken from a smaller value than the year before.
- (b) 1:3 — Let the number who cycle be 1 part. Since 3 times as many pupils walk, the number who walk is 3 parts. The ratio of cycle to walk is 1:3. (3:1 comes from writing the ratio the wrong way round, walk to cycle. 1:4 comes from treating “3 times as many” as “3 more”, so walk = cycle + 3, giving parts 1 and 4. 3:4 comes from comparing the number who walk with the total number of pupils, 3 parts out of 4 parts altogether, instead of comparing cycle with walk.)
- (a) 1.3 — The gradient of a distance-time graph gives the speed. Difference in speed = 4.5 − 3.2 = 1.3 km/h. A student who subtracts the speeds the wrong way round, 3.2 − 4.5, gets −1.3. A student who adds the two speeds instead of comparing them gets 7.7. A student who multiplies the two gradients gets 14.4.
- (c) 450 g — Method: use the amount of butter given to find the value of one part of the ratio, then find the mass of flour, and finally add flour and butter to get the total. Working: 180 g of butter is 2 parts, so one part is 180 ÷ 2 = 90 g. The flour is 3 parts, so 3 × 90 = 270 g, and the total mass is 270 + 180 = 450 g. So the baker can make 450 g of pastry. Distractor 270 g is only the mass of flour, forgetting to add the butter back on. Distractor 300 g comes from treating the 180 g as 3 parts instead of 2, swapping which ratio number matches the butter. Distractor 540 g comes from multiplying 180 by 3 directly instead of first finding the value of one part.
- (a) 200 seconds — Method: change the minutes into seconds using 1 minute = 60 seconds, then add on the loose seconds. Working: 3 × 60 = 180, and 180 + 20 = 200. Answer: 200 seconds. The distractors: 320 seconds comes from taking a minute as 100 seconds, giving 300 + 20; 180 seconds comes from converting the 3 minutes and forgetting the extra 20 seconds; 23 seconds comes from adding 3 and 20 without converting the minutes at all.
- (c) 2:3 — The white paint is 5 − 2 = 3 litres. The ratio of blue paint to white paint is 2 : 3, which has no common factor, so it is already in simplest form. Getting 2 : 5 compares the blue paint to the total amount of shade instead of to the white paint. Getting 3 : 2 has the two parts the wrong way round. Getting 5 : 3 uses the total amount of shade instead of the blue paint as the first part.
