Answer key
- (a) 3 hours — Method: for a fixed pool the rate of flow multiplied by the time taken is constant, so multiplying the rate by a factor divides the time by that same factor. Working: tap B's rate is 2 times tap A's rate, so tap B's time is 6 ÷ 2 = 3 hours. Answer: 3 hours. The distractors: 12 hours comes from multiplying the time by 2 as well, which treats the time as directly proportional to the rate and has the faster tap taking longer; 4 hours comes from reading ‘twice as fast’ additively, as two hours quicker, and working out 6 − 2 instead of scaling the time by a factor of 2; 1.5 hours comes from applying the factor of 2 twice, halving 6 to 3 and then halving again.
- (a) Yes — dividing both parts of 6 : 15 by 3 gives 2 : 5 — Method: divide both parts of the ratio by their highest common factor and compare. Working: the highest common factor of 6 and 15 is 3. 6 ÷ 3 = 2 and 15 ÷ 3 = 5, giving 2 : 5, so Ollie is correct. Wrong options: '6 : 15 simplifies to 3 : 5' divides incorrectly, giving the wrong simplified ratio; 'cannot simplify a ratio that does not start with an even number' states a false rule — any ratio can be simplified if its parts share a common factor; '15 ÷ 6 is not a whole number, so it cannot be simplified' wrongly tries to divide one part by the other instead of finding a common factor.
- (d) 20 litres — The ratio of concentrate to water is 2 : 5, so water = concentrate × 5 ÷ 2. 8 × 5 ÷ 2 = 20, so Priya needs 20 litres of water. Giving 40 litres multiplies by 5 but forgets to divide by 2 (8 × 5 = 40). Giving 3.2 litres uses the ratio inverted, multiplying by 2 ÷ 5 instead of 5 ÷ 2 (8 × 2 ÷ 5 = 3.2). Giving 11 litres uses additive reasoning instead of multiplicative: it adds the difference between the ratio parts, 5 − 2 = 3, onto the amount of concentrate (8 + 3 = 11), but ratios scale by multiplying, not by adding a fixed amount.
- (d) 1200 cm — Method: multiply the drawing length by the scale factor. Working: 4 × 300 = 1200 cm. Wrong options: 0.013 cm comes from dividing instead of multiplying (4 ÷ 300); 304 cm comes from adding the scale factor to the drawing length instead of multiplying; 600 cm comes from using half the scale factor (150) instead of 300.
- (b) 1:25 — Write the ratio time : volume using the numbers in the question: 8 : 200. Divide both parts by their highest common factor, 8, to give 1 : 25. (25:1 comes from writing the ratio the wrong way round, volume : time. 8:25 comes from dividing only the volume by 8 and leaving the time unchanged. 25:8 is that same mistake written the wrong way round.)
- (b) 5:8 — The mix has 5 parts sand and 3 parts cement, so 5 + 3 = 8 parts in total. Sand to total is 5 : 8, and since the highest common factor of 5 and 8 is 1, this is already in its simplest form. Giving 5 : 3 answers sand to cement, not sand to the total mix. Giving 3 : 8 is cement to total, the wrong part of the mix. Giving 8 : 5 has the total and the sand swapped round.
- (b) 1 : 3 — Write the two lengths as a ratio: 5 : 15. Divide both parts by their highest common factor, 5, to give 1 : 3. Writing 3 : 1 swaps the order, comparing B to A instead of A to B. Leaving the ratio as 5 : 15 has not been simplified. Finding 1 : 2 comes from comparing the smaller length to the gap between the two lengths (15 − 5 = 10, then wrongly simplifying 5 : 10), not from comparing the two lengths themselves.
- (c) £136 — 5% interest each year means the value becomes 100% + 5% = 105% of the previous year's value, and 105% = 1.05, so the multiplier is 1.05. Account A: £3200 × 1.05 × 1.05 = £3528. Account B (simple interest): £3200 + 2 × (£3200 × 0.03) = £3392. The difference is £3528 − £3392 = £136. (£128 comes from working out Account A with simple interest too, instead of compound: £3200 + 2 × (£3200 × 0.05) = £3520, then £3520 − £3392 = £128. £3528 is the value of Account A on its own, not the difference between the two accounts. £3392 is the value of Account B on its own, not the difference.)
- (c) 6.00 m — Method: the ratio of height to shadow length is the same for both objects. Working: road sign height ÷ shadow = 3 ÷ 5 = 0.6. Lamppost height = 0.6 × 10 = 6.00 m. Wrong options: 16.67 m comes from inverting the ratio, using shadow ÷ height instead of height ÷ shadow (10 × 5 ÷ 3); 8.00 m comes from adding the difference between the two shadow lengths to the road sign's height instead of scaling (3 + (10 − 5)); 1.50 m comes from multiplying by the ratio of the two shadow lengths the wrong way round (3 × 5 ÷ 10).
- (c) y = 3x — Method: if the ratio y : x is the same in every pair then y is always the same multiple of x, and that multiple is found by dividing a y value by its own x value. Working: 6 ÷ 2 = 3, 15 ÷ 5 = 3 and 24 ÷ 8 = 3, so every y is 3 lots of its x, which gives y = 3x. Answer: y = 3x. The distractors: y = x + 4 comes from subtracting instead of dividing on the first pair, 6 − 2 = 4, and testing it no further; y = x + 16 comes from the same subtraction on the last pair, 24 − 8 = 16; y = x/3 comes from dividing the x value by the y value, 2 ÷ 6, which gives the ratio x : y and not y : x.
- (c) 16% — Method: scale each concentration to its own mass to find the salt it contains, add the two masses of salt, then write the ratio of salt to mixture per 100 g. Working: 10:100 = x:300 gives 30 g of salt, and 25:100 = y:200 gives 50 g of salt; the mixture holds 30 + 50 = 80 g of salt in 300 + 200 = 500 g of solution; 80:500 = 16:100. Answer: 16%. The distractors: 17.5% is the mean of 10% and 25%, which ignores that there is more of the weaker solution than of the stronger one; 19% comes from swapping the two concentrations over, working out (300 × 25% + 200 × 10%) ÷ 500; 26.7% comes from dividing the 80 g of salt by the 300 g of the first solution rather than by the 500 g of mixture.
- (b) 9 m/s — The gradient of line P is 21 ÷ 3 = 7, so P has a rate of 7 m/s. The gradient of line Q is 45 ÷ 5 = 9, so Q has a rate of 9 m/s. Because 9 is greater than 7, line Q is the steeper line, with gradient 9 m/s. Taking line P's gradient instead of Q's gives 7 m/s, the less steep line. Subtracting the two lines' coordinates directly, (45 − 21) ÷ (5 − 3) = 24 ÷ 2 = 12 m/s, mixes points from different lines rather than using one line's own two points. Adding the two gradients, 7 + 9 = 16 m/s, treats 'steeper' as a total rather than a comparison.
- (c) £480.00 — To decrease by 20%, multiply by 0.80 (100% − 20%). £600 × 0.80 = £480.00. £120.00 comes from working out only the decrease (£600 × 0.20) and forgetting to subtract it from the original value. £580.00 comes from subtracting 20 directly instead of 20% of £600. £720.00 comes from multiplying by 1.20, adding the percentage instead of subtracting it.
- (c) 200 students — Method: find the percentage who have a brother or a sister, taking care that the students with both are not counted twice, then take that percentage from 100% and apply the result to the 400 students. Working: 25% + 40% = 65%, but the 15% with both has been counted in each of those figures, so 65% − 15% = 50% have a brother or a sister; that leaves 100% − 50% = 50%, and 50% of 400 = 200. Answer: 200 students. The distractors: 260 students is 65% of 400, the number with a brother or a sister when the 15% overlap is counted twice; 140 students comes from taking that same uncorrected 65% away from the 400; 300 students comes from subtracting only the 25% with a brother and ignoring the sisters altogether.
- (c) 250 miles — Find the distance travelled in 1 hour: 150 ÷ 3 = 50 miles. Multiply by 5 hours: 50 × 5 = 250 miles. Giving 300 miles doubles the original distance (150 × 2 = 300) using a scale factor of 2 instead of the correct 5 ÷ 3. Giving 200 miles adds only one extra hour's distance, 50, instead of the two extra hours actually needed (150 + 50 = 200, rather than 150 + 100). Giving 90 miles divides by the scale factor instead of multiplying (150 × 3 ÷ 5 = 90).
