Answer key
- (a) 40 m² — A scale of 1 : 10 is a length scale factor of 10 from model to real. Areas scale with the square of the length scale factor: 10² = 100. 0.4 × 100 = 40, so the real staircase covers 40 m². Giving 4 m² uses the length scale factor, 10, without squaring it (0.4 × 10 = 4). Giving 0.04 m² divides by the scale factor instead of multiplying by its square (0.4 ÷ 10 = 0.04). Giving 400 m² cubes the scale factor, 10³ = 1000, as if area scaled like a volume (0.4 × 1000 = 400).
- (a) 4 — Method: put both amounts into the same unit, then divide the bottle by the glass. Working: 1 litre = 1000 ml, and 1000 ÷ 250 = 4. Answer: 4. The distractors: 0.25 comes from dividing the glass by the bottle, 250 ÷ 1000, the division the wrong way round; 40 comes from taking 1 litre as 10 000 ml; 1250 comes from adding 1000 and 250 instead of dividing.
- (c) 36 cm — A perimeter is built from lengths, so it is multiplied by the length scale factor and not by the square of it. The scale factor from the smaller rectangle to the larger one is 10 ÷ 5 = 2. The larger perimeter is therefore 18 × 2 = 36 cm.
- (c) Firm B — £3 per mile against Firm A's £2 per mile — Firm A's gradient is (14 − 4) ÷ 5 = 2, so it charges £2 per mile. Firm B's gradient is (21 − 6) ÷ 5 = 3, so it charges £3 per mile. £3 is more than £2, so Firm B charges more per mile. Swapping the two firms' gradients gives the answer with Firm A at £3 and Firm B at £2, which has the labels the wrong way round. Dividing the change in miles by the change in cost, instead of the other way round, gives 5 ÷ 10 = £0.50 for Firm A and 5 ÷ 15 = £0.33 for Firm B and so names Firm A — that is the gradient upside down. And a positive fixed charge does not mean two firms charge the same rate: the rate is found from the gradient, not from whether the intercept is positive.
- (a) 3/8 — The whole prize fund is split into 3 + 5 = 8 equal parts. The smaller winner receives 3 of these parts, so their share is 3/8 of the whole fund. Taking the larger number of parts, 5, as the numerator instead gives 5/8, the larger winner's share. Writing the ratio numbers directly as a fraction without adding them, 3/5, treats the ratio as a fraction of the OTHER share rather than of the whole. Inverting the ratio gives 5/3, which is not even a valid fraction of a whole, since it is greater than 1.
- (a) 4 — Method: for inverse proportion, x × y always stays the same value. Working: when x = 5 and y = 8, the constant is 5 × 8 = 40. When x = 10, y = 40 ÷ 10 = 4. So y = 4. Distractor 16 comes from treating the relationship as direct proportion instead of inverse, working out 8 × 10 ÷ 5. Distractor 3 comes from assuming y decreases by the same amount that x increases, an additive rather than proportional idea. Distractor 0.8 comes from dividing the given y-value, 8, by the new x-value, 10, without first finding the constant.
- (c) £478.40 — Method: apply the percentage increase, then apply the percentage decrease to the new price. Working: after the increase, the laptop costs £520 × 1.15. Multiplying this result by 0.80 gives the final price, £478.40. Answer: £478.40. £494 comes from combining the two percentages into a single net change (15% − 20% = −5%) and applying it directly, £520 × 0.95 = £494, instead of applying the two changes one after the other. £416 comes from applying only the 20% decrease to the original price, £520 × 0.80 = £416, forgetting the increase entirely. £598 comes from applying only the 15% increase and stopping there, forgetting to apply the decrease at all.
- (a) £150 — Value after year 1: £800 × 0.75 = £600. Value after year 2: £600 × 0.75 = £450. The loss during the second year alone is £600 − £450 = £150. £450 comes from giving the value remaining after 2 years, not the amount lost during the second year. £200 comes from working out the loss during the first year instead of the second: £800 − £600 = £200. £350 comes from working out the total loss over both years instead of just the second year's loss: £800 − £450 = £350.
- (d) 15 cm — An enlargement by scale factor 3 means every length is multiplied by 3: 5 × 3 = 15 cm. Dividing by the scale factor instead, 5 ÷ 3 = 1.7 (to 1 d.p.), gives 1.7 cm — dividing shrinks the plan rather than enlarging it. Adding the scale factor instead of multiplying, 5 + 3 = 8, gives 8 cm. Squaring the scale factor, as you would for an area, 5 × 3² = 45, gives 45 cm — length scales by the factor itself, not its square.
- (b) 24 — Method: let one part of the ratio be worth x, write both groups in terms of x, and use the fact that the two groups end up equal. Working: the boys are 3x and the girls are 4x; after the 6 boys join, 3x + 6 = 4x, so x = 6; the girls are 4 parts, so 4 × 6 = 24. Answer: 24 girls. The distractors: 18 is the number of boys before the 6 join, which is 3 × 6; 30 comes from adding the 6 new members to the girls as well as to the boys; 42 is the total number of members in the choir before the 6 boys join, the 18 boys and the girls together.
- (b) 4/5 — Write the mass of the beans over the mass of the soup: 400/500. Divide the top and bottom by 100 to get 4/5. Choosing 5/4 comes from writing the soup's mass over the beans' mass, the wrong way round. Choosing 1/5 comes from finding the difference in mass (500 − 400 = 100) and writing that over the mass of the soup, instead of using the mass of the beans. Choosing 5/9 comes from writing the mass of the soup over the total mass of both tins (500 out of 900), instead of over the mass of the beans.
- (b) 1:25 — Write the ratio time : volume using the numbers in the question: 8 : 200. Divide both parts by their highest common factor, 8, to give 1 : 25. (25:1 comes from writing the ratio the wrong way round, volume : time. 8:25 comes from dividing only the volume by 8 and leaving the time unchanged. 25:8 is that same mistake written the wrong way round.)
- (a) The plumber charges £20 for each extra hour worked — The gradient is the change in C divided by the change in h: (85 − 45) ÷ (3 − 1) = 40 ÷ 2 = £20. On this graph the gradient represents the extra amount charged for each extra hour worked, so the answer is 'The plumber charges £20 for each extra hour worked'. Not dividing by the change in h gives 40, the option that reads 'charges £40 for each extra hour worked' — that is the total change in cost between the two points, not the rate per hour. Reading off the C-value of the first point, 45, gives the option using £45 — that is the cost of a job lasting 1 hour, not the rate. Treating the gradient as a flat total charge regardless of the time taken misunderstands what a straight-line graph through two different h-values shows: the cost does depend on h, so it cannot be a single fixed total.
- (a) 1260 — To increase by 5%, multiply by 1.05 (100% + 5%). 1200 × 1.05 = 1260. 60 comes from working out only the increase (1200 × 0.05) and forgetting to add it to the original population. 1205 comes from adding 5 directly to 1200 instead of 5% of 1200. 1800 comes from multiplying by 1.5, using 50% instead of 5%.
- (d) 5 — Method: in an equation of inverse proportion the constant is divided by the value of x. Working: y = 20 ÷ x with x = 4 gives y = 20 ÷ 4 = 5. Answer: 5. The distractors: 80 comes from multiplying 20 by 4 instead of dividing, which is direct proportion applied to an inverse relationship; 16 comes from working out 20 − 4, treating the constant as something to subtract from; 0.2 comes from dividing the wrong way round, 4 ÷ 20.
