Answer key
- (a) 160 g — Method: use the ratio 20:100 to find the mass of the whole solution from the mass of acid, then take the acid away to leave the water. Working: 20:100 = 40:m, and 40 ÷ 20 = 2, so m = 2 × 100 = 200 g of solution; the water is 200 − 40 = 160 g. Answer: 160 g. The distractors: 200 g is the mass of the whole solution, which is the middle step and includes the acid the question asks you to leave out; 8 g comes from working out 20% of 40 g, which treats the 40 g as the whole solution rather than as the 20% inside it; 10 g comes from reading the 40 g as the 80% that is water, giving a solution of 50 g and a difference of 50 − 40.
- (b) 19.0 g/cm³ — Density = mass ÷ volume. 342.6 ÷ 18 = 19.0333…, which rounds to 19.0 g/cm³ (1 d.p.). 6166.8 g/cm³ comes from multiplying the mass by the volume instead of dividing (342.6 × 18). 324.6 g/cm³ comes from subtracting the volume from the mass (342.6 − 18) instead of dividing. 0.1 g/cm³ comes from dividing the volume by the mass instead of the mass by the volume (18 ÷ 342.6 = 0.0525…, rounded to 1 d.p.).
- (b) £13,860 — Method: apply the first year's percentage decrease, then apply the second year's percentage decrease to the new value. Working: after the first year, the car is worth £17,500 × 0.88. Multiplying this result by 0.90 gives the value at the end of the second year, £13,860. Answer: £13,860. £13,650 comes from adding the two percentages together (12% + 10% = 22%) and applying a single 22% decrease, £17,500 × 0.78 = £13,650, instead of applying the decreases one after the other. £15,750 comes from applying only the second year's 10% decrease to the original price, forgetting the first year's decrease entirely, £17,500 × 0.90 = £15,750. £15,400 comes from applying only the first year's 12% decrease and stopping there, forgetting to apply the second year's decrease at all.
- (a) 1.375 — The multiplier is the new value divided by the original value: 176 000 ÷ 128 000 = 1.375. Choosing 0.375 comes from working out the increase as a fraction of the original (48 000 ÷ 128 000 = 0.375) and stopping there, without adding on the 1 whole that represents the original turnover. Choosing 0.727 comes from dividing the 2023 turnover by the 2024 turnover, the wrong way round (128 000 ÷ 176 000, rounded to 3 decimal places). Choosing 137.5 comes from writing the multiplier as a percentage — the 2024 turnover is 137.5% of the 2023 turnover — instead of converting it to the decimal multiplier 1.375.
- (c) 1.25 cm — Method: find the real length using the first map's scale, then use the second map's scale to find its drawn length. Working: real length = 5 × 20 000 = 100 000 cm. On the second map: 100 000 ÷ 80 000 = 1.25 cm. Wrong options: 20 cm comes from inverting the ratio of the two scales (5 × 80 000 ÷ 20 000); 5 cm comes from wrongly assuming the length looks the same on both maps; 12.5 cm comes from dropping a zero from the second scale factor and dividing by 8 000 instead of 80 000 (100 000 ÷ 8 000).
- (c) 6.00 m — Method: the ratio of height to shadow length is the same for both objects. Working: road sign height ÷ shadow = 3 ÷ 5 = 0.6. Lamppost height = 0.6 × 10 = 6.00 m. Wrong options: 16.67 m comes from inverting the ratio, using shadow ÷ height instead of height ÷ shadow (10 × 5 ÷ 3); 8.00 m comes from adding the difference between the two shadow lengths to the road sign's height instead of scaling (3 + (10 − 5)); 1.50 m comes from multiplying by the ratio of the two shadow lengths the wrong way round (3 × 5 ÷ 10).
- (d) 75 pages — Method: find the number of pages printed in one minute, then scale up to 10 minutes. Working: 45 ÷ 6 = 7.5 pages per minute, so 7.5 × 10 = 75 pages. Answer: 75 pages. 27 pages comes from using the ratio upside down, 45 × 6 ÷ 10, instead of finding the rate per minute first. 55 pages comes from simply adding the extra minutes, 10, onto the original number of pages, 45. 70 pages comes from rounding the rate down to 7 pages per minute before multiplying by 10, instead of using the exact rate of 7.5.
- (d) 21 — Add the parts: 5 + 3 = 8. Divide the total by the number of parts: 56 ÷ 8 = 7, so one part is worth 7 counters. Blue has 3 parts: 3 × 7 = 21. (35 is the number of red counters, using 5 parts instead of 3. 28 comes from splitting 56 counters in half instead of in the ratio 5:3. 7 is the value of one part — the number of blue counters is 3 lots of this, not just one.)
- (b) 900 N/m² — Pressure = force ÷ area, so 45 ÷ 0.05 = 900 N/m². Working out 45 ÷ 5 = 9 misplaces the decimal point in the area, treating 0.05 m² as 5 m². Working out 45 × 0.05 = 2.25 multiplies force and area together instead of dividing. Working out 45 + 0.05 = 45.05 simply adds the two given numbers, which does not give a pressure at all. The pressure on the ground is 900 N/m².
- (a) 70 km/h — Method: average speed for a whole journey is the total distance divided by the total time, not the mean of the separate speeds. Working: 3 × 80 = 240 km and 1 × 40 = 40 km, giving 280 km in 3 + 1 = 4 hours, so 280 ÷ 4 = 70. Answer: 70 km/h. The distractors: 60 km/h comes from taking the mean of 80 and 40, which would only be right if equal times were spent at each speed; 280 km/h is the total distance written with a speed unit, from forgetting to divide by the total time; 80 km/h comes from quoting the speed of the longer leg as the average for the whole journey.
- (d) 500 ml — Varnish covers a surface, so the amount needed scales with the area scale factor, which is the square of the length scale factor. The length scale factor is 50 ÷ 20 = 2.5, so the area scale factor is 2.5 × 2.5 = 6.25. The varnish needed for the larger statue is 80 × 6.25 = 500 ml. Using 2.5 on its own would scale a length, not a surface.
- (c) 4/5 — Find 20% of £45: 10% is £4.50, so 20% is £9. The sale price is £45 − £9 = £36. Form the fraction 36/45; both numbers share a factor of 9, so 36 ÷ 9 = 4 and 45 ÷ 9 = 5, giving 4/5. 1/5 comes from writing the discount itself as a fraction of the normal price (9/45), instead of the sale price. 6/5 comes from adding the 20% instead of subtracting it, giving a sale price of £54, then 54/45 = 6/5. 5/9 comes from treating 'reduced by 20%' as 'reduced by £20', giving a sale price of £25, then 25/45 = 5/9.
- (c) £338.69 — To increase by 12% each year, multiply by 1.12 twice. £270 × 1.12 × 1.12 = £338.688, which rounds to £338.69 (nearest penny, since the third decimal place is 8). £334.80 comes from treating the two 12% increases as a single flat 24% increase applied once instead of compounding: £270 × 1.24 = £334.80. £302.40 comes from applying the 12% increase only once, for 1 year instead of 2: £270 × 1.12 = £302.40. £338.68 comes from rounding £338.688 down to the nearest penny instead of up.
- (d) £24 — Add the parts of the ratio: 2 + 3 + 7 = 12. Find the value of one part: £96 ÷ 12 = £8. Cara's share is 3 parts: 3 × £8 = £24. (£16 is Ben's share, 2 × £8, not Cara's. £56 is Dev's share, 7 × £8, not Cara's. £28.80 comes from wrongly adding the ratio parts as 10 instead of 12, giving one part = £9.60.)
- (b) 20 km — The scale 2 cm : 5 km means each 1 cm on the map represents 5 ÷ 2 = 2.5 km in real life. The footpath is 8 cm on the map, so its real length is 8 × 2.5 = 20 km. 40 km comes from multiplying 8 by 5 directly, ignoring that the scale's '2 cm' has to be divided out first: 8 × 5 = 40. 3.2 km comes from dividing 8 by 2.5 instead of multiplying: 8 ÷ 2.5 = 3.2. 5 km comes from multiplying 2.5 by the scale's '2' instead of by the footpath's 8 cm: 2.5 × 2 = 5.
