Answer key
- (a) 2 : 3 — Simplify the volume ratio first: 64 : 216 divides by 8 to give 8 : 27. Volumes scale with the cube of the height ratio, so take the cube root of each part: the cube root of 8 is 2, and the cube root of 27 is 3, giving a height ratio of 2 : 3. Giving 3 : 2 has the ratio the right way round for larger to smaller, not smaller to larger. Giving 8 : 27 is the simplified volume ratio, without cube-rooting it. Giving 64 : 216 is the volume ratio before it has even been simplified.
- (c) 30 — Method: use y = kx and find k from the given pair of values, then substitute x = 12. Working: k = 20 ÷ 8 = 2.5, so y = 2.5 × 12 = 30. Answer: 30. 24 comes from treating the relationship as additive, adding the increase in x (12 − 8 = 4) straight onto y (20 + 4 = 24), instead of multiplying by k. 14.5 comes from finding k correctly (2.5) but then adding it to x instead of multiplying (12 + 2.5 = 14.5). 4.8 comes from finding k upside down, 8 ÷ 20 = 0.4, and multiplying by x: 12 × 0.4 = 4.8.
- (b) 3/10 — Work out the empty space: 500 − 350 = 150 litres. Form the fraction 150/500; both numbers share a factor of 50, so 150 ÷ 50 = 3 and 500 ÷ 50 = 10, giving 3/10. 7/10 comes from writing the fraction of the tank that is full (350/500), instead of the empty space. 1/2 comes from miscalculating 500 − 350 as 250 instead of 150. 3/7 comes from comparing the empty space with the water held (150/350), instead of with the tank's total capacity.
- (d) 135 m² — Method: for area, the scale factor must be squared. Working: area scale = 300² = 90 000. 15 × 90 000 = 1,350,000 cm². Convert to m² by dividing by 10 000: 1,350,000 ÷ 10 000 = 135 m². Wrong options: 0.45 m² comes from using the linear scale factor (×300) instead of squaring it; 1,350,000 m² comes from forgetting to convert the answer from cm² to m²; 13,500 m² comes from dividing by 100 instead of 10 000 when converting units.
- (b) 3:2 — Write both fractions over a common denominator of 4: 3/4 stays as 3/4, and 1/2 = 2/4. Comparing the numerators gives the ratio 3 : 2. Getting 2 : 3 swaps the two parts round. Getting 3 : 1 comes from using the numerator of the first fraction and the original numerator of the second fraction (1) without converting to a common denominator. Getting 2 : 1 comes from using only the denominators, 4 and 2, and simplifying those instead of the numerators.
- (b) 0.22 km — The real one-way distance is 4.4 × 2500 = 11000 cm. Converting units: 11000 ÷ 100 = 110 m, and 110 ÷ 1000 = 0.11 km. Since the jogger runs there and back, the total distance is 0.11 × 2 = 0.22 km. 0.11 km comes from working out only the one-way distance and forgetting the return journey. 220 km comes from correctly doubling the one-way distance in metres, 110 × 2 = 220, but leaving it mislabelled as kilometres instead of converting metres to kilometres. 110 km comes from working out only the one-way distance in metres, 110, and mislabelling it as kilometres.
- (a) x = 6, y = 27 — Method: for direct proportion, y = kx, so k = y ÷ x. Working: k = 9 ÷ 2 = 4.5. At x = 6: y = 4.5 × 6 = 27. Wrong options: x = 6, y = 13 comes from adding the change in x (4) onto y instead of scaling by k; x = 6, y = 3 comes from treating the relationship as inverse proportion (k = 2 × 9 = 18, then y = 18 ÷ 6 = 3); x = 6, y = 24 comes from rounding the constant of proportionality down to 4 instead of using 4.5.
- (b) 900 N/m² — Pressure = force ÷ area, so 45 ÷ 0.05 = 900 N/m². Working out 45 ÷ 5 = 9 misplaces the decimal point in the area, treating 0.05 m² as 5 m². Working out 45 × 0.05 = 2.25 multiplies force and area together instead of dividing. Working out 45 + 0.05 = 45.05 simply adds the two given numbers, which does not give a pressure at all. The pressure on the ground is 900 N/m².
- (b) 80% — Percentage = (40 ÷ 50) × 100 = 80%.
- (b) 1.00 litres — Total volume = 350 + 650 = 1000 cm³. Since 1000 cm³ = 1 litre, the smoothie is 1.00 litre. Using only the orange juice's 650 cm³ and converting that gives 0.65 litres, forgetting the mango juice entirely. Using only the mango juice's 350 cm³ gives 0.35 litres, forgetting the orange juice. Adding both volumes correctly to get 1000 cm³ but not converting to litres leaves the answer as 1000.00, which is the volume in the wrong unit.
- (d) 13/10 — First find the selling price: £150 + £45 = £195. Put the selling price over the cost price: 195/150. Divide both numbers by their highest common factor, 15: 195÷15 = 13, 150÷15 = 10, giving 13/10. (10/13 comes from writing the prices the wrong way round. 3/10 is just the profit written as a fraction of the cost price, 45/150, not the selling price. 13/23 comes from comparing the selling price to the combined total of the cost price and the selling price, 195/345.)
- (d) 500 ml — Varnish covers a surface, so the amount needed scales with the area scale factor, which is the square of the length scale factor. The length scale factor is 50 ÷ 20 = 2.5, so the area scale factor is 2.5 × 2.5 = 6.25. The varnish needed for the larger statue is 80 × 6.25 = 500 ml. Using 2.5 on its own would scale a length, not a surface.
- (a) 0.6 litres — The ratio 1 : 9 means the solution has 1 + 9 = 10 equal parts in total. Each part is 6 ÷ 10 = 0.6 litres, and disinfectant is 1 part, so Priti needs 0.6 litres of disinfectant. Giving 0.667 litres divides by 9, the number of parts of water, instead of the total number of parts, 10 (6 ÷ 9 ≈ 0.667). Giving 6 litres is the total amount of solution, not just the disinfectant's share of it. Giving 5.4 litres works out the water's share (6 × 9 ÷ 10 = 5.4), not the disinfectant's.
- (d) 5:3:2 — German = 100% − 50% − 30% = 20%. The ratio 50 : 30 : 20 simplifies by dividing every part by 10 to give 5 : 3 : 2.
- (d) £117.60 — Add the hours worked over the two days: 6 + 4.5 = 10.5 hours. Multiply by the rate of pay: 10.5 × £11.20 = £117.60. (£67.20 is Monday's pay only. £50.40 is Tuesday's pay only. £106.40 comes from mistakenly adding the hours as 6 + 3.5 = 9.5 — misreading Tuesday's 4.5 hours as 3.5 — and then multiplying by £11.20.)
