Answer key
- (a) 1500 ml — Method: to change litres into millilitres, multiply by 1000. Working: 1.5 × 1000 = 1500 ml. So the bottle holds 1500 ml. Distractor 150 ml comes from multiplying by 100 instead of 1000. Distractor 15000 ml comes from multiplying by 10000, an extra zero. Distractor 1.5 ml comes from not converting the units at all.
- (c) 10,800 kg — Method: since the model and the real container are similar and made of the same material, mass scales with volume, so the mass scale factor is the length scale factor cubed. Working: 30³ = 27,000, so the real container's mass is 400 × 27,000 = 10,800,000 g, which is 10,800,000 ÷ 1,000 = 10,800 kg. Answer: 10,800 kg. 12 kg comes from using the length scale factor directly, 400 × 30 = 12,000 g, without cubing it. 360 kg comes from squaring the length scale factor instead of cubing it, 400 × 30² = 360,000 g. 10,800,000 kg comes from correctly cubing the scale factor but then forgetting to convert the mass from grams into kilograms.
- (b) 80% — Percentage = (40 ÷ 50) × 100 = 80%.
- (a) 40 m² — A scale of 1 : 10 is a length scale factor of 10 from model to real. Areas scale with the square of the length scale factor: 10² = 100. 0.4 × 100 = 40, so the real staircase covers 40 m². Giving 4 m² uses the length scale factor, 10, without squaring it (0.4 × 10 = 4). Giving 0.04 m² divides by the scale factor instead of multiplying by its square (0.4 ÷ 10 = 0.04). Giving 400 m² cubes the scale factor, 10³ = 1000, as if area scaled like a volume (0.4 × 1000 = 400).
- (b) 460 — To increase by 15%, multiply by 1.15 (100% + 15%). 400 × 1.15 = 460. 60 comes from working out only the increase, 400 × 0.15 = 60, and forgetting to add it to the original number. 415 comes from adding 15 directly to 400 instead of 15% of 400. 340 comes from multiplying by 0.85, decreasing instead of increasing: 400 × 0.85 = 340.
- (a) 15:1 — Write the ratio distance : petrol using the numbers in the question: 90 : 6. Divide both parts by their highest common factor, 6, to give 15 : 1. (1:15 comes from writing the ratio the wrong way round, petrol : distance. 5:2 comes from dividing only the distance by 6 and leaving the 6 litres unchanged, giving 15:6, which does simplify to 5:2 — the error is the step before, because both parts of a ratio must be divided by the same number. 14:1 comes from subtracting at the first step instead of dividing, 90 − 6 = 84, and then writing 84 : 6 and dividing both parts by 6 to get 14 : 1; subtracting has no part in simplifying a ratio.)
- (c) 36 cm — A perimeter is built from lengths, so it is multiplied by the length scale factor and not by the square of it. The scale factor from the smaller rectangle to the larger one is 10 ÷ 5 = 2. The larger perimeter is therefore 18 × 2 = 36 cm.
- (d) 1:4 — Convert 1.4 l to millilitres: 1.4 l = 1400 ml. The ratio is 350 : 1400. Divide both parts by 350: 350 ÷ 350 = 1 and 1400 ÷ 350 = 4, giving 1 : 4. Misreading 1.4 l as 14 (moving the decimal point) gives 350 : 14, which simplifies to 25 : 1 — a very different, implausible ratio. Dividing by 175 instead of 350 gives 2 : 8, which still shares a common factor of 2, so it is not fully simplified. Swapping the order gives 4 : 1, litres to millilitres the wrong way round.
- (c) 448.00 US dollars — Method: multiply the amount in pounds by the exchange rate. Working: £350 × 1.28 = 448.00 US dollars. Wrong options: 273.44 US dollars comes from dividing by the rate instead of multiplying (350 ÷ 1.28); 351.28 US dollars comes from adding the rate to the amount instead of multiplying; 4,480.00 US dollars comes from a decimal-point slip, using 12.8 instead of 1.28.
- (b) 9 m/s — The gradient of line P is 21 ÷ 3 = 7, so P has a rate of 7 m/s. The gradient of line Q is 45 ÷ 5 = 9, so Q has a rate of 9 m/s. Because 9 is greater than 7, line Q is the steeper line, with gradient 9 m/s. Taking line P's gradient instead of Q's gives 7 m/s, the less steep line. Subtracting the two lines' coordinates directly, (45 − 21) ÷ (5 − 3) = 24 ÷ 2 = 12 m/s, mixes points from different lines rather than using one line's own two points. Adding the two gradients, 7 + 9 = 16 m/s, treats 'steeper' as a total rather than a comparison.
- (a) Inverse proportion — A curve that decreases and never touches either axis is the standard shape for inverse proportion, y = k/x. Direct proportion graphs are straight lines through the origin, which this is not, so it must be inverse proportion rather than neither.
- (c) 2 : 5 — A ratio is written in the order the question names the two shapes, so triangle A's length comes first: 4 : 10. Both parts divide by 2: 4 ÷ 2 = 2 and 10 ÷ 2 = 5, giving 2 : 5. Lengths are compared using the lengths themselves, so nothing is squared here; squaring both parts would give the ratio of the areas instead.
- (c) 5 m — The scale 1 : 100 means 1 cm on the map represents 100 cm in real life. The path is 5 cm on the map, so the real length is 5 × 100 = 500 cm. Convert to metres: 500 cm = 5 m. Dividing instead of multiplying, 5 ÷ 100 = 0.05, gives 0.05 m — the scale must be used to make the real object bigger than the map, not smaller. Leaving the answer as 500 without converting to metres and calling it 500 m mistakes centimetres for metres. Using a scale of 1 : 1000 instead of the given 1 : 100 gives 5 × 1000 = 5000 cm = 50 m, ten times too large.
- (a) £14224 — Value after 2 years: £15000 × 1.04 × 1.04 = £16224. Money left after buying the trailer: £16224 − £2000 = £14224. £14200 comes from treating the two 4% increases as a single flat 8% increase applied once instead of compounding: £15000 × 1.08 = £16200, and £16200 − £2000 = £14200. £13600 comes from applying the 4% increase only once, for 1 year instead of 2: £15000 × 1.04 = £15600, and £15600 − £2000 = £13600. £18224 comes from adding the £2000 instead of subtracting it: £16224 + £2000 = £18224.
- (a) 3/4 — Write January's total over February's total: 360/480. Both numbers share a factor of 120, so dividing top and bottom by 120 gives 3/4. Choosing 4/3 comes from writing February's amount over January's amount, the wrong way round. Choosing 1/4 comes from finding the difference between the two months (480 − 360 = 120) and writing it over February's amount, instead of using January's amount. Choosing 3/7 comes from writing January's amount over the total received across both months (360 out of 840), instead of over February's amount alone.
