Answer key
- (b) 20 — The gradient is the change in p divided by the change in t: (90 − 30) ÷ (5 − 2) = 60 ÷ 3 = 20. Choosing 0.05 comes from dividing the change in t by the change in p, the wrong way round (3 ÷ 60). Choosing −20 comes from subtracting the coordinates in the wrong order for one part of the calculation, for example (30 − 90) ÷ (5 − 2), giving a negative value. Choosing 18 comes from dividing the second p-coordinate by the second t-coordinate directly (90 ÷ 5) instead of using the change between the two points.
- (c) £480.00 — To decrease by 20%, multiply by 0.80 (100% − 20%). £600 × 0.80 = £480.00. £120.00 comes from working out only the decrease (£600 × 0.20) and forgetting to subtract it from the original value. £580.00 comes from subtracting 20 directly instead of 20% of £600. £720.00 comes from multiplying by 1.20, adding the percentage instead of subtracting it.
- (a) 36 — Pressure = force ÷ area, so 126 ÷ 3.5 = 36 N/m². (0.03 comes from dividing the area by the force instead of the force by the area, the wrong way round. 129.5 comes from adding 126 and 3.5 instead of dividing. 441 comes from multiplying 126 by 3.5 instead of dividing.)
- (d) 40 cm — Method: convert the real length to centimetres, then divide by the scale factor. Working: 10 m = 1000 cm. 1000 ÷ 25 = 40 cm. Wrong options: 0.4 cm comes from dividing 10 by 25 without converting metres to centimetres first; 25000 cm comes from multiplying instead of dividing (1000 × 25); 4 cm comes from converting 10 m to 100 cm (using ×10 instead of ×100) before dividing.
- (a) 4 days — Method: the fence is a fixed amount of work, so builders × days is constant; find that product and divide it by the new number of builders. Working: 3 × 12 = 36 builder-days of work, so with 9 builders the time is 36 ÷ 9 = 4 days. Answer: 4 days. The distractors: 6 days comes from halving the 12 days because there are more builders, rather than dividing by the factor of 3 by which the workforce has grown; 36 days is the constant product of builders and days, given as a number of days instead of being shared between the builders; 9 days comes from taking 3 days off the 12, treating three extra builders as three fewer days, which is additive rather than proportional.
- (a) 75% — Method: to express one quantity as a percentage of another, divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. Working: 18 ÷ 24 = 0.75, and 0.75 × 100 = 75. Answer: 75%. The distractors: 25% is the percentage she got wrong, 6 out of 24; 133% comes from dividing the whole by the part, 24 ÷ 18; 18% comes from writing the number of correct answers with a percent sign.
- (d) 3 : 5 — Simplify the area ratio: 18 : 50 divides by 2 to give 9 : 25. Areas scale with the square of the length ratio, so take the square root of each part: the square root of 9 is 3, and the square root of 25 is 5, giving a side length ratio of 3 : 5. Giving 5 : 3 has the ratio the right way round for larger to smaller, not smaller to larger. Giving 9 : 25 is the simplified area ratio, without square-rooting it. Giving 18 : 50 is the area ratio before it has even been simplified.
- (a) £85.47 — Value after 2 years: £1200 × 1.035 × 1.035 = £1285.47 (nearest penny). Interest earned = £1285.47 − £1200 = £85.47. £1285.47 is the total value of the account, not the interest earned on top of the original £1200. £84.00 comes from using simple interest instead of compound interest: £1200 × 0.035 × 2 = £84.00. £42.00 comes from working out only the first year's interest and stopping there: £1200 × 0.035 = £42.00.
- (b) 35 N/m² — Pressure = force ÷ area. 84 ÷ 2.4 = 35 N/m². 201.6 N/m² comes from multiplying the force by the area instead of dividing (84 × 2.4). 81.6 N/m² comes from subtracting the area from the force (84 − 2.4) instead of dividing. 0.03 N/m² comes from dividing the area by the force instead of the force by the area (2.4 ÷ 84).
- (a) f = 4s — Method: in the ratio 4 : 1 the sugar is 1 part, so one part weighs s grams, and the flour is 4 of those same parts. Working: one part is s, so four parts are 4 × s, giving f = 4s; as a check, if s = 3 then the flour is 4 × 3 = 12 g, and 12 : 3 does simplify to 4 : 1. Answer: f = 4s. The distractors: f = s/4 uses the ratio the wrong way round, as though the flour were 1 part and the sugar 4; f = s + 3 comes from reading the ratio as a difference, 4 − 1 = 3, and adding that difference instead of multiplying; f = 5s uses 4 + 1 = 5, the total number of parts, as the multiplier, but 5 parts is the whole mixture and not the flour on its own.
- (b) 25 m/s — Convert km/h to m/s by multiplying by 1000 (km to m) and dividing by 3600 (hours to seconds): 90 × 1000 ÷ 3600 = 25 m/s. Working out 90 ÷ 60 = 1.5 converts using 60, as if going from hours to minutes rather than to seconds. Working out 90 × 3.6 = 324 multiplies by 3.6 instead of dividing by it, going the wrong way between the units. Working out 90 × 1000 = 90000 converts kilometres to metres but forgets to convert hours to seconds at all. The train's speed is 25 m/s.
- (a) 15 km/h — Speed = distance ÷ time, so 45 ÷ 3 = 15 km/h. Working out 45 × 3 = 135 multiplies distance and time together instead of dividing. Working out 45 + 3 = 48 and 45 − 3 = 42 both combine the two values by addition or subtraction, which does not give a speed at all. The cyclist's average speed is 15 km/h.
- (c) 1 : 27 — The edge lengths are in the ratio 2 : 6, which simplifies to 1 : 3. Volumes scale with the cube of the length ratio, so the volume ratio is 1³ : 3³ = 1 : 27. Giving 1 : 3 uses the length ratio without cubing it. Giving 1 : 9 squares the length ratio, which is the rule for areas, instead of cubing it, which is the rule for volumes. Giving 27 : 1 has the ratio the right way round for larger to smaller, not smaller to larger as the question asks.
- (c) 9:15:21 — 6 : 10 : 14 simplifies to 3 : 5 : 7 (divide every part by 2). Multiplying every part of 3 : 5 : 7 by 3 gives 9 : 15 : 21, so 9 : 15 : 21 is equivalent to 6 : 10 : 14. Adding 2 to every part of 6 : 10 : 14 gives 8 : 12 : 16, which is not equivalent — ratios are equivalent when every part is multiplied by the same number, not when the same number is added to every part. Doubling only the first two parts, 6 × 2 = 12 and 10 × 2 = 20, but leaving the third part unchanged at 14, gives 12 : 20 : 14 — a scaling applied to two parts and not the third. Cancelling the first two parts correctly, 6 ÷ 2 = 3 and 10 ÷ 2 = 5, then treating the three numbers as a sequence and making the third part the sum of the first two, 3 + 5 = 8, gives 3 : 5 : 8 — the third part was never divided by 2 at all.
- (b) 2000 cm³ — Method: a cm³ is smaller than a litre, so changing litres into cm³ means multiplying by the conversion factor 1000. Working: 2 × 1000 = 2000. Answer: 2000 cm³. The distractors: 200 cm³ comes from multiplying by 100 instead of 1000; 20 cm³ comes from multiplying by 10; 20000 cm³ comes from multiplying by 10 000.
