Answer key
- (a) 15:1 — Write the ratio distance : petrol using the numbers in the question: 90 : 6. Divide both parts by their highest common factor, 6, to give 15 : 1. (1:15 comes from writing the ratio the wrong way round, petrol : distance. 5:2 comes from dividing only the distance by 6 and leaving the 6 litres unchanged, giving 15:6, which does simplify to 5:2 — the error is the step before, because both parts of a ratio must be divided by the same number. 14:1 comes from subtracting at the first step instead of dividing, 90 − 6 = 84, and then writing 84 : 6 and dividing both parts by 6 to get 14 : 1; subtracting has no part in simplifying a ratio.)
- (d) 1.00 litres — Squash is 2/9 of the mixture, so the squash volume is 4.5 × 2/9 = 1.00 litres. Using the water's fraction, 7/9, instead of squash's gives 4.5 × 7/9 = 3.50 litres — the volume of water, not squash. Dividing 4.5 by 9 but forgetting to multiply by the numerator 2 gives 4.5 ÷ 9 = 0.50 litres, which is only 1/9 of the mixture. Halving the total volume instead of applying the fraction 2/9 gives 4.5 ÷ 2 = 2.25 litres, which assumes the mixture is half squash.
- (b) 12 cm — Method: height:width = 3:2 means both lengths are built from parts of the same size, so write 3:2 = 18:x, find one part and multiply by the number of parts in the width. Working: the height is 3 parts and measures 18 cm, so one part is 18 ÷ 3 = 6 cm; the width is 2 parts, so 2 × 6 = 12 cm. Answer: 12 cm. The distractors: 27 cm comes from using the ratio the wrong way round, 18 ÷ 2 × 3, which makes the width longer than the height even though 2 is the smaller part; 6 cm is the value of one part, given as the width instead of being doubled; 17 cm comes from treating the ratio as a difference — 3 − 2 = 1, so 1 cm is taken off the height — but a ratio scales the lengths, it does not subtract from them.
- (a) 24 N/m² — Pressure = force ÷ area. 68.4 ÷ 2.85 = 24 N/m². 194.94 N/m² comes from multiplying the force by the area instead of dividing (68.4 × 2.85). 65.55 N/m² comes from subtracting the area from the force (68.4 − 2.85) instead of dividing. 0.04 N/m² comes from dividing the area by the force instead of the force by the area (2.85 ÷ 68.4).
- (d) 4/7 — Put the tomato plant's height over the sunflower's height: 80/140. Divide both numbers by their highest common factor, 20: 80÷20 = 4, 140÷20 = 7, giving 4/7. (7/4 comes from writing the heights the wrong way round. 3/7 comes from finding the difference in the heights, 140 − 80 = 60 cm, and writing it as a fraction of the sunflower's height, 60/140. 4/11 comes from comparing the tomato plant's height to the total height of both plants, 80/220.)
- (d) 25% — Method: to convert a decimal to a percentage, multiply by 100. Working: 0.25 × 100 = 25. Answer: 25%. The distractors: 0.25% comes from writing a percent sign after the decimal without multiplying; 2.5% comes from multiplying by 10 instead of 100; 250% comes from multiplying by 1000.
- (c) 1 : 25 — The radii are in the ratio 4 : 20, which simplifies to 1 : 5. Areas scale with the square of the length ratio, so the area ratio is 1² : 5² = 1 : 25. Giving 1 : 5 uses the radius ratio without squaring it. Giving 1 : 10 doubles the radius ratio instead of squaring it. Giving 25 : 1 has the areas the right way round for larger to smaller, not smaller to larger.
- (c) 1.05 litres — Method: find the value of one part of the ratio from the total volume, then find the share for pineapple juice. Working: the ratio 5:3:2 has 5 + 3 + 2 = 10 parts, so one part is 3.5 ÷ 10 = 0.35 litres, and the pineapple juice is 3 × 0.35 = 1.05 litres. So 1.05 litres of pineapple juice is needed. Distractor 1.75 litres is the volume of orange juice, not pineapple juice. Distractor 0.7 litres is the volume of lemonade, not pineapple juice. Distractor 0.35 litres is the value of one part, found correctly but never multiplied by 3.
- (d) 3/5 — Put the school journey time over the gym journey time: 12/20. Divide both numbers by their highest common factor, 4: 12÷4 = 3, 20÷4 = 5, giving 3/5. (5/3 comes from writing the times the wrong way round. 2/5 comes from finding the difference in the times, 20 − 12 = 8 minutes, and writing it as a fraction of the gym time, 8/20. 3/8 comes from comparing the school time to the total time for both journeys, 12/32.)
- (a) 2 : 3 — Simplify the volume ratio first: 64 : 216 divides by 8 to give 8 : 27. Volumes scale with the cube of the height ratio, so take the cube root of each part: the cube root of 8 is 2, and the cube root of 27 is 3, giving a height ratio of 2 : 3. Giving 3 : 2 has the ratio the right way round for larger to smaller, not smaller to larger. Giving 8 : 27 is the simplified volume ratio, without cube-rooting it. Giving 64 : 216 is the volume ratio before it has even been simplified.
- (b) 8 — The gradient of a line through the origin is the y-value divided by the x-value at any point on the line. Using (10, 80): gradient = 80 ÷ 10 = 8.
- (c) 2:3 — Divide both parts by the common factor 3a: 6a ÷ 3a = 2 and 9a ÷ 3a = 3, giving the ratio 2 : 3.
- (a) 3/8 — The whole prize fund is split into 3 + 5 = 8 equal parts. The smaller winner receives 3 of these parts, so their share is 3/8 of the whole fund. Taking the larger number of parts, 5, as the numerator instead gives 5/8, the larger winner's share. Writing the ratio numbers directly as a fraction without adding them, 3/5, treats the ratio as a fraction of the OTHER share rather than of the whole. Inverting the ratio gives 5/3, which is not even a valid fraction of a whole, since it is greater than 1.
- (a) 12 — Speed × time is constant: k = 20 × 15 = 300. At 25 pages per minute, the time is 300 ÷ 25 = 12 minutes. Getting 18.75 comes from treating speed and time as directly proportional and working out 15 × 25 ÷ 20 instead of dividing k by the new speed. Getting 20 comes from adding the increase in speed (25 − 20 = 5) onto the time (15 + 5 = 20). Getting 10 comes from subtracting that same increase in speed from the time (15 − 5 = 10).
- (a) 2978 — A rise of 6% is a multiplier of 1.06, applied once for each year. After year 1: 2500 × 1.06 = 2650. After year 2: 2650 × 1.06 = 2809. After year 3: 2809 × 1.06 = 2977.54, which is 2978 to the nearest whole number. Multiplying by 1.18 in one go would be wrong, because the second and third years grow from larger numbers than the first.
