- 1.The number of calories burned, E, by a runner is plotted against the time, m minutes, on a straight-line graph. The line passes through the origin and the point (10, 80). Work out the gradient of the line.
- 2.A sum of £150 is divided between Ben and Chloe in the ratio 2:3. Work out Chloe's share.
- 3.In a fruit drink, 3/8 of the total volume is orange juice and the rest is apple juice. Write down the ratio of orange juice to apple juice, in its simplest form.
- 4.Triangle ABC is mathematically similar to triangle PQR, with AB corresponding to PQ and BC corresponding to QR. AB = 6 cm, BC = 8 cm and PQ = 12 cm. Work out the length of QR.
- 5.Four graphs are described below. Each shows one quantity plotted against another. Write down the description of the graph that shows two quantities in direct proportion.
- 6.y is directly proportional to x. When x = 8, y = 20. Work out the value of y when x = 12.
- 7.The ratio of the number of red beads to blue beads in a bracelet is 3 : 7. There are 21 blue beads. Work out the number of red beads.
- 8.To make a shade of green paint, the amount of yellow paint used is always 0.75 times the amount of blue paint used. Write the amount of blue paint as a fraction of the amount of yellow paint, in its simplest form.
- 9.A metal has a density of 7.8 g/cm³. Work out the density of the metal in kg/m³.
- 10.The rent on a flat increases by 10% one year and by a further 10% the following year. Work out the overall percentage increase over the two years.
- 11.The price of a games console is reduced by 10%. In a later sale the reduced price is reduced by 10% again. Work out the overall percentage decrease.
- 12.Write the ratio 3/4 : 1/2 as a ratio of whole numbers in its simplest form.
- 13.x is 2/3 of y. Write the ratio x : y in its simplest form.
- 14.A parcel of flour has a mass of 750 g. A sack of flour has a mass of 4 kg. Write the mass of the parcel as a fraction of the mass of the sack. Give your answer in its simplest form.
- 15.y is inversely proportional to x, and y = 20 ÷ x. Work out the value of y when x = 4.
