- 1.A class has 28 pupils. 16 of the pupils are girls and the rest are boys. Write the ratio of girls to boys in its simplest form.
- 2.A worker is paid £13.20 per hour. Work out this rate of pay in pence per minute.
- 3.A laptop priced at £520 is first increased by 15%, and then the new price is decreased by 20%. Work out the final price of the laptop.
- 4.A vegetable patch is divided between carrots, potatoes and onions in the ratio 2 : 3 : 5. Write down the fraction of the patch used for potatoes.
- 5.A recipe for pancakes uses 240 g of flour to make pancakes for 6 people. Work out how many grams of flour are needed to make pancakes for 15 people, using the same recipe.
- 6.A map has a scale of 1 : 50 000. Two villages are 4 cm apart on the map. Work out the real distance between the villages, in kilometres.
- 7.Triangle A and triangle B are mathematically similar. A side of triangle A is 5 cm long, and the corresponding side of triangle B is 15 cm long. Write the ratio of the length in triangle A to the length in triangle B in its simplest form.
- 8.Two mathematically similar water bottles have a volume scale factor of 8 from the smaller bottle to the larger bottle. Work out the surface area scale factor from the smaller bottle to the larger bottle.
- 9.A box contains 12 red counters and 18 blue counters. Write the number of red counters as a fraction of the number of blue counters. Give your answer in its simplest form.
- 10.Triangle ABC is mathematically similar to triangle PQR, with AB corresponding to PQ and BC corresponding to QR. AB = 6 cm, BC = 8 cm and PQ = 12 cm. Work out the length of QR.
- 11.A tin of beans has a mass of 400 g. A tin of soup has a mass of 500 g. Write the mass of the tin of beans as a fraction of the mass of the tin of soup, giving your answer in its simplest form.
- 12.y is directly proportional to x, and y = 3x. Work out the value of y when x = 4.y = 3x
- 13.Write the ratio 5 : 8 in the form 1 : n.
- 14.Two quantities x and y are in the ratio x : y = 2 : 5, and y = kx for a constant k. Work out the value of k.
- 15.A fruit bowl contains 9 apples and 21 oranges. Write down the ratio of apples to oranges in its simplest form.
