- 1.A sum of £150 is divided between Ben and Chloe in the ratio 2:3. Work out Chloe's share.
- 2.A table shows three pairs of values: when x = 2, y = 6; when x = 5, y = 15; when x = 8, y = 24. In every pair the ratio y : x is the same. Write down a formula for y in terms of x.
- 3.Water flows into a tank at a constant rate. After 8 minutes the tank holds 200 litres. Write the ratio of time in minutes to volume in litres, in its simplest form.
- 4.A science technician mixes 400 g of a salt solution of concentration 5% with 100 g of a salt solution of concentration 25%. Work out the concentration of the mixture.
- 5.A plan is drawn to a scale of 1 : 25. A real fence is 10 m long. Work out the length of the fence on the plan, in centimetres.
- 6.The price of a jacket increases by 50% and then decreases by 50%. Describe the overall change from the original price.
- 7.A room plan is drawn to a scale of 1 : 50. A wall in the room is 4 m long in real life. Work out the length of the wall on the plan, in centimetres.
- 8.An acid solution has a concentration of 20%. The solution contains 40 g of acid, and the rest of the solution is water. Work out the mass of water in the solution.
- 9.y is directly proportional to x. When x = 4, y = 10. Work out the value of y when x = 6.
- 10.Triangle A and triangle B are mathematically similar. A side of triangle A is 4 cm long and the corresponding side of triangle B is 10 cm long. Write the ratio of the length in triangle A to the length in triangle B in its simplest form.
- 11.Write 250 g : 2 kg as a ratio in its simplest form.
- 12.x is 2/3 of y. Write the ratio x : y in its simplest form.
- 13.A plan is drawn to a scale of 1 : 500. Work out how many metres are represented by 1 cm on the plan.
- 14.In a school choir the ratio of boys to girls is 3:4. When 6 more boys join the choir, the ratio of boys to girls becomes 1:1. Work out how many girls are in the choir.
- 15.A car travels 150 km in 3 hours at a constant speed. Work out the average speed of the car, in km/h.
