- 1.Jamal is paid £54 for working 6 hours. Work out his rate of pay, in £ per hour.
- 2.Work out the value of x when 4/x = 2/5.
- 3.3 builders put up a fence in 12 days. All the builders work at the same rate, so the number of days is inversely proportional to the number of builders. Work out how long 9 builders take to put up the same fence.
- 4.A room is drawn on a plan with a scale of 1 : 200. On the plan the room has an area of 12 cm². Work out the real area of the room, in square metres.
- 5.y is directly proportional to x. When x = 4, y = 10. Work out the value of y when x = 6.
- 6.A tin of beans has a mass of 400 g. A tin of soup has a mass of 500 g. Write the mass of the tin of beans as a fraction of the mass of the tin of soup, giving your answer in its simplest form.
- 7.A scale model of a bus is built so that 5 cm on the model represents 60 cm on the real bus. Write the ratio of the length of the model to the length of the real bus, in its simplest form.
- 8.A charity collects donations from adults and children in the ratio 5:2. Altogether, £238 is collected. Work out how much more the adults donate than the children.
- 9.y is directly proportional to x, so y = kx. When x = 2, the value of y is 10. Work out the value of k.
- 10.Two numbers are in the ratio 5 : 8. The larger number is 40. Work out the smaller number.
- 11.The ratio of the amount of money Harry has to the amount of money Isla has is 5:3. Harry has £35. Work out how much money Isla has.
- 12.A water tank has a capacity of 500 litres. It currently holds 350 litres of water. Write the amount of empty space in the tank as a fraction of the tank's capacity. Give your answer in its simplest form.
- 13.A cyclist travels d kilometres in t hours. Write down an expression, in terms of d and t, for the cyclist's average speed in km/h.
- 14.Two numbers a and b are in the ratio a : b = 3 : 4. Given that a = 15, work out the value of b.
- 15.The time taken for a train journey is inversely proportional to the average speed of the train. At an average speed of 60 km/h the journey takes 2 hours. Work out the time taken at an average speed of 40 km/h.
