- 1.A bag contains 7 red counters and 15 blue counters. Write down the ratio of red counters to blue counters in its simplest form.
- 2.The price of a share falls by 10% on Monday and then rises by 10% on Tuesday. Work out the overall percentage change from Monday's starting price.
- 3.An oven is preheating. Its temperature, T °C, is plotted against time, t minutes, on a straight-line graph. The line passes through the points (2, 60) and (6, 140). Work out the gradient of the line.
- 4.A footpath is drawn 3 cm long on a map with a scale of 1 : 50 000. Work out the real length of the footpath, in metres.
- 5.Last week Priya worked 5 shifts of 7 hours. This week she worked 4 shifts of 8 hours. Write the number of hours she worked last week as a fraction of the number of hours she worked this week.
- 6.Two quantities, P and Q, are in inverse proportion. A graph is drawn with P on the vertical axis and Q on the horizontal axis. Write down which description fits the shape of this graph.
- 7.3 pencils cost £1.20. Work out the cost of 7 pencils.
- 8.A map has a scale of 2 cm : 5 km. A footpath measures 8 cm on the map. Work out the real length of the footpath, in kilometres.
- 9.y is directly proportional to x. When x = 7, the value of y is 21. Work out the value of x when y = 12.
- 10.£5000 is invested in an account paying 4% compound interest each year. Work out the total interest earned after 3 years.
- 11.y is directly proportional to x. When x = 2, y = 9. Which of these pairs of values is also consistent with this proportion?
- 12.A jug holds 2 litres. Given that 1 litre = 1000 cm³, work out the capacity of the jug in cm³.
- 13.Simplify the ratio 12 : 18 : 30 to its simplest form.
- 14.A charity receives £360 in donations in January and £480 in donations in February. Write the amount received in January as a fraction of the amount received in February, giving your answer in its simplest form.
- 15.A sofa costs £800. Its price is increased by 25%. Work out the new price of the sofa.
