- 1.y is directly proportional to x, so y = kx. When x = 2, the value of y is 10. Work out the value of k.
- 2.After a 20% discount, a jacket costs £48. Work out the original price of the jacket.
- 3.Priya is paid £58.50 for working 7.5 hours on a Saturday. Work out her rate of pay, in £ per hour.
- 4.A train journey takes 2 hours 15 minutes. A bus journey to the same place takes 3 hours 45 minutes. Write the time for the train journey as a fraction of the time for the bus journey, giving your answer in its simplest form.
- 5.A salt solution has a concentration of 10%. The solution contains 50 g of salt. Work out the total mass of the solution.
- 6.The price of a jacket increases by 50% and then decreases by 50%. Describe the overall change from the original price.
- 7.Write 250 g : 2 kg as a ratio in its simplest form.
- 8.A jug of squash is made by mixing water and syrup in the ratio 6:1. Nia wants to make 8.4 litres of squash. Work out how much syrup she needs, in litres.
- 9.Write 3 hours 45 minutes as a decimal number of hours.
- 10.Two numbers a and b are in the ratio a : b = 3 : 4. Given that a = 15, work out the value of b.
- 11.Triangle ABC has a right angle at C. AC = 3 cm and BC = 4 cm. Triangle ABC is mathematically similar to triangle PQR, with angle B corresponding to angle Q. Work out the value of tan(angle Q).
- 12.A scale drawing of a garden uses a scale of 1 : 20. Write down a formula for the real length, L metres, in terms of the length on the drawing, d centimetres, given that 1 metre = 100 centimetres.
- 13.Leah puts £4000 into a savings account paying 3% compound interest each year. At the end of 2 years she takes out all of the money and spends £1500 of it on a laptop. Work out how much of the money she has left.
- 14.Write 0.25 as a percentage.
- 15.A straight-line graph passes through the origin and the point (4, 10). The line represents y = kx. Write down the ratio x : y in its simplest form.
