- 1.Ravi has 5 pears. He has 4 times as many apples as pears. Write the number of pears as a fraction of the number of apples.
- 2.40% of a number is 12 more than 25% of the same number. Work out the number.
- 3.At an animal shelter, the ratio of cats to dogs is 2:5. There are 18 more dogs than cats. Work out the number of cats.
- 4.A lorry is carrying a load of mass m tonnes. Given that 1 tonne = 1000 kg, write down an expression for the mass of the load in kilograms.
- 5.It takes 2 identical pumps 10 hours to empty a flooded basement. Working at the same rate, work out how many hours 5 of these pumps would take to empty the same basement.
- 6.The ratio of cats to dogs in a shelter is 3:4. There are 18 cats. Work out the total number of animals in the shelter.
- 7.A 750 g box of cereal costs £2.70. A 500 g box of the same cereal costs £1.95. Work out which box is better value, and its cost per 100 g.
- 8.A film runs for 2.25 hours. Work out the length of the film in minutes.
- 9.The number of tickets a group can afford is inversely proportional to the price per ticket. At £4 per ticket, the group can afford 12 tickets. Work out how many tickets the group can afford at £6 per ticket.
- 10.Write the ratio 4 : 9 in the form 1 : n.
- 11.There are 400 students at a school. 25% of them have a brother, 40% have a sister and 15% have both a brother and a sister. Work out how many of the students have neither a brother nor a sister.
- 12.A blue ribbon is 45 cm long. A red ribbon is 30 cm long. Write the length of the blue ribbon as a fraction of the length of the red ribbon. Give your answer in its simplest form.
- 13.A jumper normally costs £45. In a sale it is reduced by 20%. Work out the sale price, then write the sale price as a fraction of the normal price. Give your answer in its simplest form.
- 14.Two cars travel at constant speeds. Car A travels 150 km in 3 hours. Car B travels 180 km in 4 hours. Which car is faster, and what is its speed?
- 15.Butter costs £2.40 per kg. Work out the cost of the butter in pence per 100 g.
