- 1.A factory makes a batch of 4,000 circuit boards. It checks a random sample of 50 boards and finds that 4 are faulty. The factory will scrap the whole batch if the estimated number of faulty boards in the batch is more than 250. Should the factory scrap the batch?
- 2.A vet records the masses, m kg, of 30 dogs at a clinic in Preston: 0 < m ≤ 10 — 11 dogs, 10 < m ≤ 20 — 5 dogs, 20 < m ≤ 30 — 5 dogs, 30 < m ≤ 40 — 9 dogs. Work out an estimate for the mean mass, in kg, using the midpoint of each class interval.
- 3.A bar chart is drawn for a set of categorical data. Write down what the height of each bar represents.
- 4.A pupil writes this question for a school survey: “Do you agree that learning matters and that we should be set more homework?” Write down what is wrong with the survey question.
- 5.A scatter graph plots the shoe size and the spelling test score of 25 pupils. The points are scattered with no pattern across the graph. Write down the type of correlation shown.
- 6.A scatter graph shows the number of years of experience, x, of 18 sales assistants and their monthly sales, y hundred pounds. The plotted points run from x = 1 to x = 12 years, and the line of best fit is y = 4x + 20. A new assistant has 25 years of experience. Use the line of best fit to estimate a value of y for this assistant, and decide whether the estimate would be reliable.y = 4x + 20
- 7.In a scatter graph of the age, in years, and the wingspan, in cm, of 20 birds of the same species, all the points lie close to a rising line of best fit except one, which lies a long way below the line. That bird was later found to have a damaged wing. Give a reason why this point should not be used when drawing the line of best fit.
- 8.The lowest temperature in a garden in Sheffield was recorded on each of seven days: 3 °C, 5 °C, 2 °C, 7 °C, 4 °C, 6 °C and 3 °C. Write down what the range of these seven temperatures describes.
- 9.Two classes at a school in Coventry sit the same maths test, out of 20 marks. Class A has a mean mark of 14 and a range of 6. Class B has a mean mark of 14 and a range of 14. Write a sentence comparing the two classes, using the mean and the range.
- 10.The mean of five test scores is 68. Four of the scores are 55, 62, 74 and 80. Work out the fifth score.
- 11.A scatter graph has 50 points. Most of them lie close to a rising line of best fit, but two of them lie a long way from that line. Write down how those two points should be treated.
- 12.On a scatter graph the horizontal axis shows height in centimetres and the vertical axis shows mass in kilograms. One point is plotted at (170, 65). Write down the height and the mass of that person.
- 13.A café in York counts the number of customers in each of the nine hours it is open on one day: 4, 4, 4, 11, 13, 15, 18, 22 and 25. The owner says that a typical hour has about 4 customers, because 4 is the mode. Is the owner right? Give a reason for your answer.
- 14.A council wants to find out what all residents of a town think about a new cycle lane. It posts a survey only on its website and asks people to fill it in online. Give a reason why this sample is likely to be biased.
- 15.A quality inspector weighs a random sample of 50 packets of crisps from one day's production and finds their mean mass is 32.4 g. The factory makes 20,000 packets that day. Work out an estimate for the total mass, in kg, of all the packets made that day.
