- 1.The graph of P = 480 ÷ V shows how the pressure, P pascals, of a gas depends on its volume, V cm³, at constant temperature. Use the relationship to work out the volume when the pressure is 32 pascals, and then work out by how much the volume increases when the pressure drops to 24 pascals.
- 2.A cyclist accelerates uniformly from rest to 6 m/s in 4 seconds, travels at a constant 6 m/s for 10 seconds, then decelerates uniformly to rest in 3 seconds. Work out the total distance the cyclist travels.
- 3.The iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = xₙ³ − 2 is used repeatedly, starting from x₀ = 2. Which of these describes what happens to the sequence of values as n increases?
- 4.A water tank is a cuboid with a square base of side x metres and height (x + 1) metres. Its volume is 10 m³. This gives x³ + x² − 10 = 0, which can be solved using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = ∛(10 − xₙ²). Taking x₀ = 2, so that x₁ is the value found after the formula has been used once, work out x₃ correct to 3 decimal places.
- 5.A car's speed-time graph shows the following: its speed increases steadily from 0 m/s to 20 m/s over the first 10 seconds, then stays constant at 20 m/s for the next 15 seconds. Work out the total distance travelled in the first 25 seconds.
- 6.A car is decelerating. The tangent to its velocity-time graph at t = 12 seconds passes through the points (8, 22) and (16, 6), where velocity is in m/s and time is in seconds. Work out the gradient of this tangent, in m/s².
- 7.A model rocket's height is given by h = −5t² + 20t, where h is in metres and t is in seconds. A student says the graph of h against t is n-shaped. Which statement gives the correct verdict on the SHAPE and the reason that settles it from the equation?
- 8.The equation 7x = x² + 3 can be solved using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = (xₙ² + 3) ÷ 7. Taking x₀ = 0.4, x₁ = 0.4514 correct to 4 decimal places. Using the full unrounded value of x₁, work out x₂ correct to 3 decimal places.
- 9.Solve the inequality 6.3x + 1.8 ≤ 40. Hence write down the greatest number with exactly one decimal place that satisfies the inequality.
- 10.A car accelerates uniformly from rest at 2.5 m/s² until it reaches a speed of 20 m/s, then travels at this constant speed for a further 30 seconds. Work out the total distance travelled.
- 11.Show that the equation x³ − x − 3 = 0 has a solution between x = 1 and x = 2, by working out f(1) and f(2), where f(x) = x³ − x − 3.y = x
- 12.A van's value depreciates by 18% each year. After 2 years it is worth £5,379.20. Work out its value when it was new, correct to the nearest pound.
- 13.A circular pond has equation x² + y² = 20, with lengths in metres from the centre of the garden. A straight path runs along the line y = 2x, entering the pond and leaving it again. Work out the coordinates of the two points where the path meets the edge of the pond.y = 2x
- 14.A company's weekly profit, in £, is modelled by y = f(x), where x is the number of weeks since launch. The graph of y = f(x) has a maximum at (10, 45000). A rival company uses the same marketing strategy but starts trading 6 weeks later and has fixed costs £8000 higher every week, so its profit is modelled by y = f(x − 6) − 8000. In which week does the rival's maximum weekly profit occur, and what is it?
- 15.The braking distance of a car, in metres, is estimated using the formula d = 0.4v² + 6, where v is the speed in mph. A car travelling at 35 mph brakes. Work out the estimated braking distance.
Answer key
- (b) 5 cm³ — When P = 32, V = 480 ÷ 32 = 15 cm³. When P = 24, V = 480 ÷ 24 = 20 cm³. The increase in volume is 20 − 15 = 5 cm³. Giving only the second volume, 20 cm³, forgets to subtract the first volume. Giving only the first volume, 15 cm³, answers the wrong part of the question. Subtracting the two pressures instead of the two volumes, 32 − 24 = 8, mixes up which quantity the question asks for.
- (c) 81 m — Split the velocity-time graph into its three phases. The accelerating phase (0 to 4 s) is a triangle: 1/2 × 4 × 6 = 12. The constant phase (4 s at 6 m/s, for 10 s) is a rectangle: 10 × 6 = 60. The decelerating phase (3 s) is a triangle: 1/2 × 3 × 6 = 9. Total distance: 12 + 60 + 9 = 81 m. Forgetting the final decelerating phase entirely and adding only the first two areas gives 12 + 60 = 72 m. Treating all three phases as rectangles, forgetting to halve either triangular phase, gives 4 × 6 + 10 × 6 + 3 × 6 = 102 m. Halving only the deceleration triangle correctly but treating the acceleration phase as a rectangle too gives 4 × 6 + 60 + 9 = 93 m.
- (d) It diverges, growing rapidly without limit. — x₁ = 2³ − 2 = 8 − 2 = 6. x₂ = 6³ − 2 = 216 − 2 = 214. x₃ = 214³ − 2 = 9800344 − 2 = 9800342. The values 6, 214, 9800342, … grow far larger at every step, so the sequence diverges rather than settling anywhere. Checking whether the sequence converges to a fixed value near 2 fails, since the terms grow enormously instead of levelling off. Checking for a repeating pair of values also fails, since 6, 214 and 9800342 are all different, with no sign of a return to 6. x₀ = 2 is a fixed point only if 2³ − 2 = 2, but 2³ − 2 = 6, not 2, so the sequence does not stay constant.
- (a) 1.861 — x₁ = ∛(10 − 2²) = ∛6 = 1.817120593. x₂ = ∛(10 − 1.817120593²) = ∛6.698072751 = 1.885022855. x₃ = ∛(10 − 1.885022855²) = ∛6.446688837 = 1.861139399, which rounds to 1.861. Reporting x₂ instead of x₃ gives 1.885022855, which rounds to 1.885. Stopping after the first iteration and reporting x₁ instead of x₃ gives 1.817120593, which rounds to 1.817. A sign error inside the cube root, using xₙ₊₁ = ∛(10 + xₙ²) instead of ∛(10 − xₙ²), gives x₁ = ∛14 = 2.410142264, x₂ = ∛(10 + 2.410142264²) = 2.509763724, and x₃ = ∛(10 + 2.509763724²) = 2.535437381, which rounds to 2.535.
- (d) 400 m — The distance travelled equals the area under the speed-time graph. The first 10 seconds form a triangle with base 10 and height 20, giving an area of 0.5 × 10 × 20 = 100 m. The next 15 seconds form a rectangle with base 15 and height 20, giving an area of 15 × 20 = 300 m. The total distance is 100 + 300 = 400 m. The option 500 m treats the whole 25 seconds as travelled at the constant 20 m/s, ignoring that the speed was building up during the first 10 seconds: 25 × 20 = 500. The option 300 m only counts the constant-speed section and forgets the triangle section entirely. The option 200 m comes from working out the triangle's area without halving it (10 × 20 = 200) and forgetting the rectangle altogether.
- (a) −2 m/s² — The gradient of a line through two points is the change in the y-value divided by the change in the x-value: (6 − 22)/(16 − 8) = −16/8 = −2 m/s². The negative sign confirms the deceleration mentioned in the question. Writing 2 m/s² comes from subtracting the velocities in the wrong order, using (22 − 6) instead of (6 − 22), which loses the sign that shows the car is slowing down. Writing −0.5 m/s² comes from inverting the fraction, dividing the change in time by the change in velocity instead of the other way round. Writing −16 m/s² comes from finding the change in velocity, −16, but forgetting to divide by the change in time, 8 seconds.
- (a) Yes — the t² coefficient is negative, giving an n-shape. — The coefficient of t² in h = −5t² + 20t is −5, which is negative, so the graph is n-shaped with a maximum point — this matches the physical story of the rocket rising then falling, but the shape itself is decided by the negative coefficient of t², not by the story alone. Saying the shape comes from the story rather than the coefficient gets the reasoning backwards — the algebra determines the shape, and the story happens to agree with it. Saying it is U-shaped because height starts by increasing confuses the early part of the curve with its overall shape; a U-shaped curve would mean the rocket's height eventually increases again forever, which does not happen here. Saying it is n-shaped only because the rocket lands treats a consequence of the shape as if it were the cause.
- (b) 0.458 — x₁ = (0.4² + 3) ÷ 7 = 3.16 ÷ 7 = 0.4514 (unrounded, 0.451428...). x₂ = (x₁² + 3) ÷ 7 = (0.2038 + 3) ÷ 7 = 3.2038 ÷ 7 = 0.458 (3 d.p.). Choosing 0.632 divides only the 3 by 7 instead of dividing the whole sum x₁² + 3 by 7. Choosing 0.451 repeats the calculation for x₁ instead of moving on to x₂. Choosing 0.493 uses x₁ itself instead of x₁² inside the formula.
- (d) 6.0 — Subtract 1.8 from both sides: 6.3x ≤ 38.2. Divide both sides by 6.3: x ≤ 6.0634… . The question asks for the greatest value to 1 decimal place that still satisfies the inequality. Testing 6.1: 6.3 × 6.1 + 1.8 = 40.23, which is more than 40, so 6.1 fails. Testing 6.0: 6.3 × 6.0 + 1.8 = 39.6, which is no more than 40, so 6.0 works and is the greatest such value. A candidate who simply rounds 6.0634… to 1 decimal place answers 6.1, without checking that it satisfies the inequality. A candidate who adds 1.8 instead of subtracting works out 41.8 ÷ 6.3 and answers 6.6. A candidate who forgets the 1.8 altogether divides 40 by 6.3 and answers 6.3.
- (d) 680 m — First find how long the acceleration takes: acceleration = change in speed ÷ time, so 2.5 = 20 ÷ t, giving t = 20 ÷ 2.5 = 8 seconds. The distance during this phase is the area of a triangle with base 8 and height 20: 1/2 × 8 × 20 = 80 m. The distance during the constant-speed phase is 20 × 30 = 600 m, since distance = speed × time at a constant speed. The total distance is 80 + 600 = 680 m. Using the given 30 seconds for the acceleration phase as well, 1/2 × 30 × 20 = 300, plus the correct 600, gives 900 m — but 30 seconds is only stated for the constant-speed phase. Leaving out the 1/2 and using the full rectangle for the acceleration phase, 8 × 20 = 160, plus the correct 600, gives 760 m — the speed is not constant during acceleration, so this area is a triangle, not a rectangle. Swapping the two times round, and using 8 seconds for the constant-speed distance instead of 30, 20 × 8 = 160, plus the correct triangle area of 80, gives 240 m.
- (b) f(1) = −3 and f(2) = 3 — f(1) = 1³ − 1 − 3 = 1 − 1 − 3 = −3. f(2) = 2³ − 2 − 3 = 8 − 2 − 3 = 3. Since f(1) is negative and f(2) is positive, there is a change of sign, so a solution lies between x = 1 and x = 2. Dropping the −x term entirely gives f(1) = 1 − 3 = −2 and f(2) = 8 − 3 = 5. Using x² instead of x³ throughout gives f(1) = 1 − 1 − 3 = −3, which happens to coincide with the correct value at x = 1, but f(2) = 4 − 2 − 3 = −1, which does not show a change of sign at all. Working out −f(x) instead of f(x), a sign-flip error, gives f(1) = 3 and f(2) = −3, the correct sizes but with both signs reversed.
- (c) £8,000 — The multiplier for one year is 1 − 0.18 = 0.82, so 0.82 × 0.82 = 0.6724. Original value = 5,379.20 ÷ 0.6724 = £8,000. Treating the total drop as simple depreciation (18% × 2 = 36% lost in total, so dividing by 0.64 instead of 0.6724) gives 5,379.20 ÷ 0.64 = £8,405 (nearest pound) — wrong, because the depreciation compounds year by year rather than adding up. Dividing by 0.82 only once, forgetting the second year entirely, gives 5,379.20 ÷ 0.82 = £6,560 — wrong, because two years of depreciation have passed, not one. Multiplying by 0.6724 instead of dividing by it — repeating the depreciation forward instead of reversing it — gives 5,379.20 × 0.6724 = £3,617 (nearest pound) — wrong, because to find the ORIGINAL value you must undo the depreciation, not apply it again.
- (b) (2, 4) and (−2, −4) — Substitute y = 2x into x² + y² = 20: x² + (2x)² = 20, which gives x² + 4x² = 20, so 5x² = 20, x² = 4, and x = 2 or x = −2. Using y = 2x for each x-value: x = 2 gives y = 4; x = −2 gives y = −4. The path meets the pond's edge at (2, 4) and (−2, −4). Distractor routes: (2, −4) and (−2, 4) swaps the sign pairing, matching each x-value with the wrong sign of y instead of keeping each x with its own correctly-signed y. (2, 1) and (−2, −1) comes from using y = x/2 instead of y = 2x when finding the y-coordinates. (2, 4) alone stops after the positive square root of x² = 4 and never finds the second point from x = −2.
- (c) Week 16, £37,000 — y = f(x − 6) − 8000 combines a horizontal translation of 6 units RIGHT (subtracting 6 inside the brackets) with a vertical translation of £8000 DOWN (subtracting 8000 outside). Applying both to the maximum (10, 45000): 10 + 6 = 16, so the new maximum is in week 16. And 45000 − 8000 = 37000, so the maximum weekly profit is £37,000.
- (c) 496 — d = 0.4v² + 6. First v² = 35 × 35 = 1225. Then 0.4 × 1225 = 490. Add 6: 490 + 6 = 496 m. 490 comes from forgetting to add the 6 at the end. 202 comes from squaring 0.4v together instead of squaring only v, (0.4 × 35)² + 6 = 14² + 6 = 202. 20 comes from using v instead of v², 0.4 × 35 + 6.
