- 1.A cup of tea cools after being made. Its temperature-time graph is a curve. Three tangents are drawn on the graph: at t = 2 minutes the tangent has gradient −8; at t = 10 minutes the tangent has gradient −3; at t = 20 minutes the tangent has gradient −0.5. Which of these statements about the tea's cooling is correct?
- 2.A square tile has an area of 144 cm². Work out the side length of the tile.
- 3.The trapezium rule is used to estimate the area under a curve between x = 2 and x = 6. The curve is concave up (it curves upwards, like the inside of a bowl) throughout this interval. Which statement about the estimate is correct?
- 4.A graph shows the total monthly cost of a mobile phone tariff against the number of minutes of calls. The line starts at £12 and stays level until 200 minutes, then rises by 5p for each further minute of calls. Use the graph to work out the total cost of a month in which 250 minutes of calls are made.
- 5.A photo printing service has two adverts for its price. Advert A: cost in pounds = 3(2n + 4) for n photos. Advert B: cost in pounds = 6n + 12. A customer says the two adverts always charge the same amount. Is the customer correct?
- 6.A machine bought for £2,400 loses 12% of its value every year. After how many complete years does its value first fall below £1,500?
- 7.A circular pond has equation x² + y² = 20, with lengths in metres from the centre of the garden. A straight path runs along the line y = 2x, entering the pond and leaving it again. Work out the coordinates of the two points where the path meets the edge of the pond.y = 2x
- 8.A number, n, is tripled and then 4.5 is added. The result is 22.5. Form an equation and solve it to find n.
- 9.A Fibonacci-type sequence is defined by aₙ = aₙ₋₁ + aₙ₋₂ for n ≥ 3. Given that a₁ = 5 and a₃ = 17, work out a₂.
- 10.Two numbers have a sum of 45. The larger number is 9 more than the smaller number. Form an equation using n for the smaller number, and solve it to find the larger number.
- 11.A car's speed-time graph shows the following: its speed increases steadily from 0 m/s to 20 m/s over the first 10 seconds, then stays constant at 20 m/s for the next 15 seconds. Work out the total distance travelled in the first 25 seconds.
- 12.The equation x³ − 2x − 7 = 0 has exactly one solution. It can be found using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = ∛(2xₙ + 7), with starting value x₀ = 2, so that x₁ is the value after the formula has been used once. Work out the solution correct to 2 decimal places, iterating until two consecutive values round to the same 2 decimal places.
- 13.The braking distance of a car, in metres, is estimated using the formula d = 0.4v² + 6, where v is the speed in mph. A car travelling at 35 mph brakes. Work out the estimated braking distance.
- 14.A cafe sells coffees at £c each and pastries at £p each. Three coffees and two pastries cost £9.60. Two coffees and two pastries cost £7.60. Work out the price of one coffee.
- 15.Work out the value of 5m² + 3m when m = −2.4
Answer key
- (c) Fastest at t = 2 min — steepest gradient. — The rate of cooling is given by the size (magnitude) of the gradient, ignoring its sign — the steeper the tangent, the faster the temperature is changing. Of −8, −3 and −0.5, the gradient −8 has the greatest magnitude, so the tea is cooling fastest at t = 2 minutes. 'Fastest at t = 20 min — largest gradient' confuses the signed value with the size of the rate: −0.5 is the largest NUMBER of the three, but it's the smallest in magnitude, meaning the tea is barely cooling at all by then. 'Cools at the same rate throughout' ignores that the three gradients are different sizes, not just all negative. 'Fastest at t = 10 min — the middle reading' isn't a mathematical reason at all — the gradients themselves have to be compared, not their position in the list.
- (c) 12 cm — For a square, area = side². So side² = 144, giving side = ±12. Since a length must be positive, the side length is 12 cm. A candidate who gives both square roots without rejecting the negative one, which cannot be a length, answers 12 cm or −12 cm. A candidate who halves 144 instead of taking its square root gets 72 cm. A candidate who divides 144 by 4, confusing the area formula with a perimeter calculation, gets 36 cm.
- (a) Overestimates — trapezium edges lie above the curve. — For a concave-up curve, each chord connecting two points on the curve lies ABOVE the curve between those points, because the curve bends away from the chord underneath it. The trapezium rule uses these chords as the top edges of each trapezium, so the trapeziums cover a larger region than the true area under the curve — the estimate is an overestimate. Saying it underestimates because the edges lie below the curve gets the direction backwards: for a concave-up curve the edges lie above, not below. Saying it overestimates 'because more strips always increase it' gives the right verdict for the wrong reason — using MORE, narrower strips makes a trapezium estimate more accurate and brings it closer to the true area, it does not simply increase the total. Saying the estimate is exact ignores that straight edges cannot follow a curved line perfectly; there is always a gap between the chord and the curve on a bend, which is exactly what makes the rule an estimate rather than an exact calculation.
- (a) £14.50 — Method: the first 200 minutes are already covered by the £12, so only 250 − 200 = 50 minutes are charged extra. Extra charge = 50 × £0.05 = £2.50. Total cost = £12 + £2.50 = £14.50. Distractor origins: £24.50 charges 5p for all 250 minutes instead of only the 50 minutes over 200 (250 × £0.05 = £12.50, plus £12 = £24.50); £12.50 makes that same slip of charging all 250 minutes but then forgets to add the £12 monthly fee; £13.50 works out 250 − 200 wrongly as 30 extra minutes instead of 50 (30 × £0.05 = £1.50, plus £12 = £13.50).
- (a) They always charge the same, since 3(2n + 4) = 6n + 12. — Expand Advert A's formula by multiplying both terms inside the bracket by 3: 3 × 2n = 6n, and 3 × 4 = 12, giving 3(2n + 4) = 6n + 12, which is identical to Advert B's formula — so the two adverts always charge the same amount, whatever n is. Getting 6n + 4 comes from multiplying the 2n by 3 but leaving the 4 unmultiplied. Getting 2n + 7 comes from adding 3 to the bracket instead of multiplying by it. Saying it depends on n avoids expanding the bracket at all — once expanded, both formulas are identical for every value of n, so the cost can be compared directly.
- (c) 4 years — The yearly multiplier is 1 − 0.12 = 0.88. After 1 year: 2400 × 0.88 = 2112. After 2 years: 2112 × 0.88 = 1858.56. After 3 years: 1858.56 × 0.88 = 1635.5328. After 4 years: 1635.5328 × 0.88 = 1439.27 (2 d.p.), which is the first value below £1,500 — so it takes 4 complete years. Stopping after 3 years, where the value is still £1,635.53, above £1,500, gives 3 years — wrong, because the threshold has not been crossed yet at that point. Continuing for one year longer than needed gives 5 years — wrong, because the value has already fallen below £1,500 by year 4, so year 5 overcounts. Multiplying by the percentage itself instead of by the multiplier — using 0.12 in place of 0.88 — gives 2400 × 0.12 = £288 after a single year, apparently below £1,500 straight away, so 1 year — wrong, because 12% is the part lost each year, and the part left is 88%, so the multiplier is 0.88.
- (b) (2, 4) and (−2, −4) — Substitute y = 2x into x² + y² = 20: x² + (2x)² = 20, which gives x² + 4x² = 20, so 5x² = 20, x² = 4, and x = 2 or x = −2. Using y = 2x for each x-value: x = 2 gives y = 4; x = −2 gives y = −4. The path meets the pond's edge at (2, 4) and (−2, −4). Distractor routes: (2, −4) and (−2, 4) swaps the sign pairing, matching each x-value with the wrong sign of y instead of keeping each x with its own correctly-signed y. (2, 1) and (−2, −1) comes from using y = x/2 instead of y = 2x when finding the y-coordinates. (2, 4) alone stops after the positive square root of x² = 4 and never finds the second point from x = −2.
- (b) 6 — 3n + 4.5 = 22.5, so 3n = 18 and n = 6. A candidate who divides 22.5 by 3 first and ignores the 4.5 gets n = 7.5. A candidate who makes a sign error and forms the equation 3n − 4.5 = 22.5 gets 3n = 27 and n = 9. A candidate who divides by 3 before subtracting the 4.5, working out 22.5 ÷ 3 + 4.5, gets n = 12.
- (d) 12 — Since a₃ = a₂ + a₁, rearranging gives a₂ = a₃ − a₁ = 17 − 5 = 12. 22 comes from adding instead of subtracting: a₃ + a₁ = 17 + 5 = 22. 11 comes from treating the sequence as if it were arithmetic and averaging the two given terms: (5 + 17) ÷ 2 = 11 — but a Fibonacci-type sequence isn't arithmetic, so this doesn't apply. −12 comes from subtracting in the wrong order: a₁ − a₃ = 5 − 17 = −12.
- (a) 27 — Method: let the smaller number be n, so the larger number is n + 9. Form the equation n + (n + 9) = 45. Working: simplify: 2n + 9 = 45, so 2n = 36, giving n = 18. The larger number is 18 + 9 = 27. Answer: 27. 18 is the smaller number, found correctly, but given as the answer to the question asking for the larger number. 22.5 comes from ignoring the "9 more" part and simply halving the total, 45 ÷ 2. 36 comes from a sign error when isolating the constant, treating the equation as 2n = 45 + 9 instead of 2n = 45 − 9.
- (d) 400 m — The distance travelled equals the area under the speed-time graph. The first 10 seconds form a triangle with base 10 and height 20, giving an area of 0.5 × 10 × 20 = 100 m. The next 15 seconds form a rectangle with base 15 and height 20, giving an area of 15 × 20 = 300 m. The total distance is 100 + 300 = 400 m. The option 500 m treats the whole 25 seconds as travelled at the constant 20 m/s, ignoring that the speed was building up during the first 10 seconds: 25 × 20 = 500. The option 300 m only counts the constant-speed section and forgets the triangle section entirely. The option 200 m comes from working out the triangle's area without halving it (10 × 20 = 200) and forgetting the rectangle altogether.
- (c) 2.26 — Method: apply the formula repeatedly, keeping the whole display each time, and stop when two values in a row round to the same 2 decimal places; that shared rounded value is the solution to that accuracy. Working: x₁ = ∛(2 × 2 + 7) = ∛11 = 2.22398…; x₂ = ∛(2 × 2.22398… + 7) = ∛11.44796… = 2.25377…; x₃ = ∛11.50754… = 2.25767…; x₄ = ∛11.51534… = 2.25818…. Now x₃ and x₄ both round to 2.26, so the sequence has settled. Answer: 2.26. The distractors: 2.22 is x₁ rounded, quoted by a candidate who stops after one use of the formula; 2.25 is x₂ rounded, quoted by a candidate who stops as soon as two values look close instead of waiting until two consecutive values round to the same figure; 1.91 is ∛7, which comes from ignoring the 2x term and solving x³ = 7 instead.
- (c) 496 — d = 0.4v² + 6. First v² = 35 × 35 = 1225. Then 0.4 × 1225 = 490. Add 6: 490 + 6 = 496 m. 490 comes from forgetting to add the 6 at the end. 202 comes from squaring 0.4v together instead of squaring only v, (0.4 × 35)² + 6 = 14² + 6 = 202. 20 comes from using v instead of v², 0.4 × 35 + 6.
- (b) £2.00 — Subtracting the second equation from the first eliminates the pastries: (3c + 2p) − (2c + 2p) = 9.60 − 7.60, so c = 2.00. A candidate who divides the first total by the number of coffees alone, ignoring the pastries, would get 9.60 ÷ 3 = £3.20. A candidate who finds the price of a pastry instead of a coffee — using c = 2.00 in 2c + 2p = 7.60 to get p = 1.80 — would answer £1.80. A candidate who reaches the correct difference of £2.00 but then mistakenly divides again or misplaces the decimal point would get £0.20.
- (c) 21.6 — m² = (−2.4)² = 5.76, since a negative number squared is positive, so 5m² = 28.8. Then 3m = 3 × (−2.4) = −7.2. Total: 28.8 + (−7.2) = 21.6. −36 comes from taking m² as negative, 5 × (−5.76) − 7.2 = −36, forgetting that squaring removes the negative sign. 36 comes from ignoring the negative sign on m altogether and using m = 2.4 throughout. 29.4 comes from treating 3m as 3 + m instead of 3 × m, giving 28.8 + (3 + (−2.4)).
