- 1.A cup of tea cools after being made. Its temperature-time graph is a curve. Three tangents are drawn on the graph: at t = 2 minutes the tangent has gradient −8; at t = 10 minutes the tangent has gradient −3; at t = 20 minutes the tangent has gradient −0.5. Which of these statements about the tea's cooling is correct?
- 2.A cafe sells coffees at £c each and pastries at £p each. Three coffees and two pastries cost £9.60. Two coffees and two pastries cost £7.60. Work out the price of one coffee.
- 3.The iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = xₙ³ − 2 is used repeatedly, starting from x₀ = 2. Which of these describes what happens to the sequence of values as n increases?
- 4.An allotment is in the shape of a rectangle. Its length is 5 m more than its width, x metres, and its area is 20 m². This gives x² + 5x − 20 = 0, which can be solved using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = 20 ÷ (xₙ + 5). Taking x₀ = 2, so that x₁ is the value found after the formula has been used once, work out x₂ correct to 2 decimal places.

- 6.A gas company charges a standing charge plus a rate per unit used. The total cost, y in pounds, for using x units is given by y = 0.15x + 20. Work out the cost of using 200 units.y = 0.15x + 20
- 7.A student uses the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = √(7xₙ + 3) to find an approximate solution of an equation. Work out which equation this iterative formula solves.
- 8.A graph shows the total monthly cost of a mobile phone tariff against the number of minutes of calls. The line starts at £12 and stays level until 200 minutes, then rises by 5p for each further minute of calls. Use the graph to work out the total cost of a month in which 250 minutes of calls are made.
- 9.f(x) = x³ − 3x − 20, and the equation f(x) = 0 has exactly one solution. Work out the pair of consecutive integers between which that solution lies.y = x
- 10.A plumber charges a call-out fee plus an hourly rate. The total cost, y in pounds, of a job lasting x hours is given by y = 45x + 60. Work out the total cost of a job that lasts 3 hours.y = 45x + 60

- 14.A phone company works out a monthly bill, £B, using the formula B = 18 + 0.05t, where £18 is the fixed monthly charge and t is the number of extra text messages sent beyond the free allowance, each charged at 5p. Farida's bill for one month is £24.50. Work out the number of extra text messages, t, she sent.
- 15.A taxi company charges a £2.50 booking fee plus £1.80 per mile. A journey costs £15.10 in total. Work out the number of miles travelled.
Answer key
- (c) Fastest at t = 2 min — steepest gradient. — The rate of cooling is given by the size (magnitude) of the gradient, ignoring its sign — the steeper the tangent, the faster the temperature is changing. Of −8, −3 and −0.5, the gradient −8 has the greatest magnitude, so the tea is cooling fastest at t = 2 minutes. 'Fastest at t = 20 min — largest gradient' confuses the signed value with the size of the rate: −0.5 is the largest NUMBER of the three, but it's the smallest in magnitude, meaning the tea is barely cooling at all by then. 'Cools at the same rate throughout' ignores that the three gradients are different sizes, not just all negative. 'Fastest at t = 10 min — the middle reading' isn't a mathematical reason at all — the gradients themselves have to be compared, not their position in the list.
- (b) £2.00 — Subtracting the second equation from the first eliminates the pastries: (3c + 2p) − (2c + 2p) = 9.60 − 7.60, so c = 2.00. A candidate who divides the first total by the number of coffees alone, ignoring the pastries, would get 9.60 ÷ 3 = £3.20. A candidate who finds the price of a pastry instead of a coffee — using c = 2.00 in 2c + 2p = 7.60 to get p = 1.80 — would answer £1.80. A candidate who reaches the correct difference of £2.00 but then mistakenly divides again or misplaces the decimal point would get £0.20.
- (d) It diverges, growing rapidly without limit. — x₁ = 2³ − 2 = 8 − 2 = 6. x₂ = 6³ − 2 = 216 − 2 = 214. x₃ = 214³ − 2 = 9800344 − 2 = 9800342. The values 6, 214, 9800342, … grow far larger at every step, so the sequence diverges rather than settling anywhere. Checking whether the sequence converges to a fixed value near 2 fails, since the terms grow enormously instead of levelling off. Checking for a repeating pair of values also fails, since 6, 214 and 9800342 are all different, with no sign of a return to 6. x₀ = 2 is a fixed point only if 2³ − 2 = 2, but 2³ − 2 = 6, not 2, so the sequence does not stay constant.
- (a) 2.55 — x₁ = 20 ÷ (2 + 5) = 20 ÷ 7 = 2.857142857. x₂ = 20 ÷ (2.857142857 + 5) = 20 ÷ 7.857142857 = 2.545454545, which rounds to 2.55. Reporting x₁ instead of x₂ gives 2.857142857, which rounds to 2.86. Dropping the +5 in the denominator, using xₙ₊₁ = 20 ÷ xₙ, gives x₁ = 20 ÷ 2 = 10 and x₂ = 20 ÷ 10 = 2, which is 2.00. A sign error in the denominator, using xₙ₊₁ = 20 ÷ (xₙ − 5), gives x₁ = 20 ÷ (2 − 5) = −6.666666667 and x₂ = 20 ÷ (−6.666666667 − 5) = −1.714285714, which rounds to −1.71.
- (d) £20 — Let f be the joining fee and m the monthly fee: f + 3m = 100 and f + 6m = 160. Subtracting the first equation from the second eliminates f: 3m = 60, so m = 20. A candidate who finds the joining fee instead of the monthly fee would get f = 100 − 3(20) = £40. A candidate who divides Ben's total by his number of months, ignoring that part of the cost is a fixed joining fee, would get 160 ÷ 6 ≈ £26.67. A candidate who divides the difference in cost by the total number of months instead of the difference in months would get (160 − 100) ÷ 9 ≈ £6.67.
- (a) £50 — Substituting x = 200 into y = 0.15x + 20 gives y = 0.15 × 200 + 20 = 30 + 20 = £50. A candidate who forgets to add the standing charge would get only 0.15 × 200 = £30. A candidate who misplaces the decimal point in the rate, using 1.5 instead of 0.15, would get 1.5 × 200 + 20 = £320. A candidate who swaps the roles of the rate and the number of units would work out 0.15 × 20 + 200 = £203.
- (d) x² − 7x − 3 = 0 — Method: an iteration settles where the next value equals the one before it, so both can be written as the same letter x; replace every xₙ by x, square both sides to clear the square root, and collect all the terms on one side. Working: x = √(7x + 3) gives x² = 7x + 3 on squaring both sides; subtracting 7x and 3 from both sides gives x² − 7x − 3 = 0. Answer: x² − 7x − 3 = 0. The distractors: x² + 7x − 3 = 0 moves the 7x across the equals sign without changing its sign; x² − 7x + 3 = 0 makes that same slip on the constant instead, leaving the 3 positive as it crosses; x² − 7x − 9 = 0 squares the expression term by term, squaring the 3 to give 9 as though squaring √(7x + 3) gave 7x + 9, which is the (a + b)² = a² + b² mistake dressed as a square root.
- (a) £14.50 — Method: the first 200 minutes are already covered by the £12, so only 250 − 200 = 50 minutes are charged extra. Extra charge = 50 × £0.05 = £2.50. Total cost = £12 + £2.50 = £14.50. Distractor origins: £24.50 charges 5p for all 250 minutes instead of only the 50 minutes over 200 (250 × £0.05 = £12.50, plus £12 = £24.50); £12.50 makes that same slip of charging all 250 minutes but then forgets to add the £12 monthly fee; £13.50 works out 250 − 200 wrongly as 30 extra minutes instead of 50 (30 × £0.05 = £1.50, plus £12 = £13.50).
- (b) 3 and 4 — Method: the graph of f(x) is continuous, so where it crosses the x-axis the value of f(x) changes sign; substitute consecutive integers until one value is negative and the next is positive. Working: f(2) = 8 − 6 − 20 = −18, f(3) = 27 − 9 − 20 = −2 and f(4) = 64 − 12 − 20 = 32. The sign changes from negative to positive between x = 3 and x = 4, so the solution lies there. Answer: 3 and 4. The distractors: 2 and 3 comes from ignoring the −3x term and solving x³ = 20, whose root is 2.71, one interval to the left; 6 and 7 comes from reading x³ as x² and solving x² − 3x − 20 = 0, whose positive root is 6.22; 4 and 5 is the interval immediately after the change of sign, named by a candidate who finds f(4) positive and quotes the interval beginning there instead of the one across which the sign actually turned.
- (d) £195 — Substituting x = 3 into y = 45x + 60 gives y = 45 × 3 + 60 = 135 + 60 = 195. A candidate who forgets to add the call-out fee would get only 45 × 3 = £135. A candidate who adds the hours to the fee and the rate instead of multiplying would get 45 + 60 + 3 = £108. A candidate who multiplies both the hourly rate and the call-out fee by the number of hours would get 45 × 3 + 60 × 3 = £315.
- (a) Subtracting 4x gives 3 = 10, which is never true. — Method: try to solve the equation as normal and see what happens. Working: subtract 4x from both sides: 4x + 3 − 4x = 4x + 10 − 4x, giving 3 = 10. This statement is false for every value of x, so the equation has no solution. Answer: subtracting 4x gives 3 = 10, which is never true. "x would have to be negative" invents a constraint on x that the equation never states. "It's true for every x" confuses this equation with an identity, where both sides would simplify to the same expression. "x = 7" misreads the false statement 3 = 10 as something to solve for x, rather than recognising it means no solution exists.
- (d) 12 — Method: call the younger brother's age x, write the elder brother's age in terms of x, and form an equation from the total. Working: the elder brother is x + 6, so x + (x + 6) = 30; simplifying gives 2x + 6 = 30, subtracting 6 from both sides gives 2x = 24, and dividing by 2 gives x = 12. Checking: 12 and 18 add up to 30 and differ by 6. Answer: 12. The distractors: 18 comes from solving correctly and then giving the elder brother's age, which is not the age asked for; 15 comes from halving 30 and ignoring the 6-year difference altogether; 24 comes from taking 6 off the total, 30 − 6 = 24, and giving that as an age.
- (d) 680 m — First find how long the acceleration takes: acceleration = change in speed ÷ time, so 2.5 = 20 ÷ t, giving t = 20 ÷ 2.5 = 8 seconds. The distance during this phase is the area of a triangle with base 8 and height 20: 1/2 × 8 × 20 = 80 m. The distance during the constant-speed phase is 20 × 30 = 600 m, since distance = speed × time at a constant speed. The total distance is 80 + 600 = 680 m. Using the given 30 seconds for the acceleration phase as well, 1/2 × 30 × 20 = 300, plus the correct 600, gives 900 m — but 30 seconds is only stated for the constant-speed phase. Leaving out the 1/2 and using the full rectangle for the acceleration phase, 8 × 20 = 160, plus the correct 600, gives 760 m — the speed is not constant during acceleration, so this area is a triangle, not a rectangle. Swapping the two times round, and using 8 seconds for the constant-speed distance instead of 30, 20 × 8 = 160, plus the correct triangle area of 80, gives 240 m.
- (a) 130 — Method: substitute the total bill into the formula, then subtract the fixed charge and divide by the cost per text message. Working: 24.50 = 18 + 0.05t, so 0.05t = 24.50 − 18 = 6.50, t = 6.50 ÷ 0.05 = 130. Answer: 130 extra text messages. 490 comes from dividing the whole bill by 0.05 without first subtracting the £18 fixed charge: 24.50 ÷ 0.05 = 490. 13 comes from dividing the £6.50 by 0.5 instead of 0.05, moving the decimal point one place too far: 6.50 ÷ 0.5 = 13. 65 comes from dividing the £6.50 by 0.1 instead of 0.05.
- (d) 7 — Method: set up the equation 2.50 + 1.80m = 15.10, then subtract the booking fee and divide by the cost per mile. Working: 1.80m = 15.10 − 2.50 = 12.60; m = 12.60 ÷ 1.80 = 7. Answer: 7 miles. 8.39 comes from dividing the whole £15.10 by £1.80 without first subtracting the booking fee: 15.10 ÷ 1.80 ≈ 8.39. 5.32 comes from swapping the two amounts round, subtracting £1.80 and dividing by £2.50: (15.10 − 1.80) ÷ 2.50 ≈ 5.32. 9.78 comes from adding the booking fee instead of subtracting it: (15.10 + 2.50) ÷ 1.80 ≈ 9.78.
