- 1.The table shows the rate at which water flows from a tank, in litres per minute, over a 6-minute period: 12 at t = 0 min, 12 at t = 2 min, 3 at t = 5 min, and 0 at t = 6 min. Between t = 0 and t = 2 the rate is constant. Between t = 2 and t = 5, and between t = 5 and t = 6, the rate decreases at a constant rate in each section. Estimate the total volume of water that has flowed out, using the areas of a rectangle and two trapeziums.
- 2.A runner's journey is shown on a distance-time graph: she runs 8 km in the first hour, rests for 30 minutes with no distance gained, then runs a further 4 km in the next 30 minutes. Work out her average speed for the whole journey, in kilometres per hour.
- 3.A rectangular sheet of metal measures 20 cm by 12 cm. A square of side x cm is cut from each corner and the sides are folded up to make an open box of volume 200 cm³. This gives x³ − 16x² + 60x − 50 = 0, which can be solved using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = (16xₙ² − xₙ³ + 50)/60. The starting value is x₀ = 1, so x₁ is the value after the formula has been used once. Work out x₃, and use it to find the longer side of the base of the box correct to 1 decimal place.
- 4.The equation x³ − 3x − 4 = 0 has a root near x = 2. Four students each try a different iterative formula, all starting from x₀ = 2: xₙ₊₁ = ∛(3xₙ + 4); xₙ₊₁ = (xₙ³ − 4) ÷ 3; xₙ₊₁ = 4 ÷ (xₙ² − 3); xₙ₊₁ = xₙ³ − 2xₙ − 4. Only one of these formulas keeps producing values that settle near the root when it is repeated. Work out x₁, correct to 3 decimal places, for the formula that does this.
- 5.A bacteria colony doubles every 4 hours and its size is recorded only every 4 hours. The recorded population 20 hours after the start is 9,600. After how many hours did the recorded population first exceed 1,000?
- 6.A parcel delivery company's cost graph shows the following: the cost is a flat £5 for parcels weighing up to 2 kg, and then rises by £2 for each additional kg above 2 kg. Use the graph to work out the weight of a parcel that costs £17.
- 7.A car's journey is represented by a velocity-time graph. The total distance travelled, found from the area under the graph, is 350 metres, and the total time for the journey is 25 seconds. Work out the car's average speed for the whole journey, in m/s.
- 8.A circular pond has equation x² + y² = 20, with lengths in metres from the centre of the garden. A straight path runs along the line y = 2x, entering the pond and leaving it again. Work out the coordinates of the two points where the path meets the edge of the pond.y = 2x
- 9.A closed cylinder has radius r cm and height (r + 5) cm. Its volume is 300 cm³, giving the equation πr²(r + 5) = 300, which can be solved using the iterative formula rₙ₊₁ = √(300 ÷ (π(rₙ + 5))). Taking r₀ = 3, work out r₃ correct to 2 decimal places.
- 10.f(x) = x³ − 3x − 5. Given that f(2.2) = −0.952 and f(2.3) = 0.267, work out what this shows about the equation x³ − 3x − 5 = 0.y = x
- 11.The formula connecting speed, distance and time is v = s ÷ t. Work out v, in km/h, when s = 180 and t = 4.
- 12.The formula for the energy stored in a stretched spring is E = (1/2)kx², where E is in joules, k is the spring constant in N/m and x is the extension in m. A spring with a spring constant of 40 N/m is stretched so that its extension is 0.3 m. Work out the energy stored in the spring.
- 13.A van's value depreciates by 18% each year. After 2 years it is worth £5,379.20. Work out its value when it was new, correct to the nearest pound.
- 14.A phone plan costs a fixed £15 per month plus 8p per minute of calls. In one month, Jamal's bill was £23.80. Form an equation using m for the number of minutes, and solve it to find how many minutes Jamal used that month.
- 15.Solve 5x² − 15x = 0.
Answer key
- (a) 48 litres — Split the area into three sections. The rectangle (t = 0 to 2) has area 2 × 12 = 24. The first trapezium (t = 2 to 5, parallel sides 12 and 3, width 3) has area 1/2 × (12 + 3) × 3 = 22.5. The second trapezium (t = 5 to 6, parallel sides 3 and 0, width 1) has area 1/2 × (3 + 0) × 1 = 1.5. Total volume: 24 + 22.5 + 1.5 = 48 litres. Forgetting the rectangle and adding only the two trapeziums gives 22.5 + 1.5 = 24 litres. Using a single trapezium across the whole 6 minutes, with parallel sides 12 and 0, ignoring that the first 2 minutes are constant, gives 1/2 × (12 + 0) × 6 = 36 litres. Correctly finding the rectangle and the first trapezium but forgetting to halve the second trapezium, using (3 + 0) × 1 = 3 instead of 1.5, gives 24 + 22.5 + 3 = 49.5 litres.
- (c) 6 km/h — Total distance = 8 + 4 = 12 km. Total time = 1 hour + 0.5 hours resting + 0.5 hours = 2 hours. Average speed = total distance ÷ total time = 12 ÷ 2 = 6 km/h. A speed of 8 km/h comes from leaving the resting time out of the total time: 12 ÷ 1.5 = 8. A speed of 4 km/h comes from dividing by too much time, such as double-counting the rest period: 12 ÷ 3 = 4. A speed of 12 km/h simply gives the total distance and forgets to divide by the total time at all.
- (c) 17.7 cm — Method: the iteration converges on x, the depth of the box, which is also the side of each square cut away; a square is removed from both ends of the 20 cm side, so the longer side of the base is 20 − 2x. Run the formula three times, then carry out that subtraction. Working: x₁ = (16 × 1² − 1³ + 50) ÷ 60 = 65 ÷ 60 = 1.08333…; x₂ = 67.50636… ÷ 60 = 1.12510…; x₃ = 68.82959… ÷ 60 = 1.14715…. The longer side of the base is 20 − 2 × 1.14715… = 17.70568…, which is 17.7 cm correct to 1 decimal place. Answer: 17.7 cm. The distractors: 1.1 cm is x₃ itself rounded, the depth of the box, given by a candidate who runs the iteration correctly and then stops before the step the question actually asks for; 18.9 cm is 20 − 1.14715…, taking away one square instead of two and forgetting that a corner is cut from each end of that side; 9.7 cm is 12 − 2 × 1.14715…, the shorter side of the base, which measures the wrong edge of the sheet.
- (a) 2.154 — Continuing xₙ₊₁ = ∛(3xₙ + 4) from x₁ = 2.154 gives x₂ = 2.187, x₃ = 2.195, settling towards the root near 2.196 — this is the formula that converges. Continuing xₙ₊₁ = (xₙ³ − 4) ÷ 3 from x₁ = 1.333 gives x₂ = −0.543 and then x₃ = −1.387, moving further from the root each time. Continuing xₙ₊₁ = 4 ÷ (xₙ² − 3) from x₁ = 4 gives x₂ = 0.308 and then x₃ = −1.377, swinging wildly rather than settling. Continuing xₙ₊₁ = xₙ³ − 2xₙ − 4 from x₁ = 0 gives x₂ = −4 and then x₃ = −60, running away from the root entirely.
- (d) 8 — Working backwards by halving (undoing the doubling), one 4-hour step at a time: 9,600 (20 h) → 4,800 (16 h) → 2,400 (12 h) → 1,200 (8 h) → 600 (4 h) → 300 (0 h). Reading these in time order — 300, 600, 1,200, 2,400, 4,800, 9,600 at 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 hours — the population is still at or below 1,000 at 4 hours (600) and first goes above 1,000 at 8 hours (1,200). So the recorded population first exceeds 1,000 at 8 hours. Answering 20 just reads off the time stated in the question, without working out when the threshold was actually first crossed — wrong, because 9,600 is only the value AT 20 hours, not necessarily the first time the population passed 1,000. Answering 0 comes from recovering the starting population by dividing 9,600 by 5 (the number of 4-hour gaps up to 20 hours) instead of by 2⁵ = 32 (the correct number of halvings), giving a wrongly-inflated starting value of 9,600 ÷ 5 = 1,920 — already above 1,000 at 0 hours — wrong, because doubling means the value must be halved five times, dividing by 2 five times (2⁵ = 32), not divided once by the number of gaps. Answering 12 comes from halving back only twice, from 9,600 to 4,800 (16 h) to 2,400 (12 h), and stopping there because 2,400 is already above 1,000, without checking that 1,200 at 8 hours is also above 1,000 and occurs earlier — wrong, because the FIRST recorded time above 1,000 is the earliest such time, not the first one reached while working backwards from 20 hours.
- (b) 8 kg — The cost above the flat £5 charge is 17 − 5 = £12. At £2 per kg, this covers 12 ÷ 2 = 6 kg above the first 2 kg, so the total weight is 2 + 6 = 8 kg. Dividing the full £17 by £2 per kg without first taking off the £5 flat charge gives 17 ÷ 2 = 8.5 kg. Taking off the £5 flat charge and dividing by £2 per kg, but forgetting to add back the 2 kg that the flat charge covers, gives 12 ÷ 2 = 6 kg. Taking off £2 instead of £5 as the flat charge, (17 − 2) ÷ 2 = 7.5 kg, swaps which number is the fixed fee.
- (b) 14 m/s — Average speed for a whole journey is total distance divided by total time: 350 ÷ 25 = 14 m/s. Multiplying the distance and time instead of dividing gives 350 × 25 = 8750 m/s. Adding the distance and time instead of dividing gives 350 + 25 = 375 m/s. Inverting the division, working out time divided by distance, gives 25 ÷ 350, which rounds to 0.07 m/s.
- (b) (2, 4) and (−2, −4) — Substitute y = 2x into x² + y² = 20: x² + (2x)² = 20, which gives x² + 4x² = 20, so 5x² = 20, x² = 4, and x = 2 or x = −2. Using y = 2x for each x-value: x = 2 gives y = 4; x = −2 gives y = −4. The path meets the pond's edge at (2, 4) and (−2, −4). Distractor routes: (2, −4) and (−2, 4) swaps the sign pairing, matching each x-value with the wrong sign of y instead of keeping each x with its own correctly-signed y. (2, 1) and (−2, −1) comes from using y = x/2 instead of y = 2x when finding the y-coordinates. (2, 4) alone stops after the positive square root of x² = 4 and never finds the second point from x = −2.
- (b) 3.38 — r₁ = √(300 ÷ (π × 8)) = √11.9366 = 3.4550. r₂ = √(300 ÷ (π × 8.4550)) = √11.2947 = 3.3608. r₃ = √(300 ÷ (π × 8.3608)) = √11.4232 = 3.3798, which rounds to 3.38. Choosing 3.36 stops at r₂, one iteration too early. Choosing 4.82 leaves out the '+ 5' inside the bracket, dividing by π × rₙ instead of π × (rₙ + 5). Choosing 3.45 comes from using π ≈ 3 instead of the calculator's π key throughout.
- (d) It has a solution between x = 2.2 and x = 2.3 — Since f(2.2) is negative and f(2.3) is positive, the graph of f crosses the x-axis somewhere between x = 2.2 and x = 2.3, so the equation has a solution in that interval. Choosing 'between x = −2.2 and x = −2.3' confuses the negative f-VALUE at 2.2 with a negative x-value. Choosing 'no solution' misreads a change of sign as meaning the opposite of what it shows. Choosing 'exactly two solutions' assumes a single change of sign must give two roots, which is not what the rule guarantees.
- (d) 45 — v = s ÷ t = 180 ÷ 4 = 45 km/h. 720 comes from multiplying s and t instead of dividing, 180 × 4. 184 comes from adding s and t instead of dividing, 180 + 4. 176 comes from subtracting t from s instead of dividing, 180 − 4.
- (a) 1.8 — E = (1/2)kx² = 0.5 × 40 × 0.3² = 0.5 × 40 × 0.09 = 1.8 joules. 3.6 comes from forgetting the (1/2) at the front, 40 × 0.09. 72 comes from squaring kx together instead of squaring only x, 0.5 × (40 × 0.3)² = 0.5 × 144 = 72. 6 comes from using x instead of x², 0.5 × 40 × 0.3.
- (c) £8,000 — The multiplier for one year is 1 − 0.18 = 0.82, so 0.82 × 0.82 = 0.6724. Original value = 5,379.20 ÷ 0.6724 = £8,000. Treating the total drop as simple depreciation (18% × 2 = 36% lost in total, so dividing by 0.64 instead of 0.6724) gives 5,379.20 ÷ 0.64 = £8,405 (nearest pound) — wrong, because the depreciation compounds year by year rather than adding up. Dividing by 0.82 only once, forgetting the second year entirely, gives 5,379.20 ÷ 0.82 = £6,560 — wrong, because two years of depreciation have passed, not one. Multiplying by 0.6724 instead of dividing by it — repeating the depreciation forward instead of reversing it — gives 5,379.20 × 0.6724 = £3,617 (nearest pound) — wrong, because to find the ORIGINAL value you must undo the depreciation, not apply it again.
- (d) 110 — Method: form the equation 15 + 0.08m = 23.80, where m is the number of minutes, then solve for m. Working: subtract the fixed fee: 0.08m = 23.80 − 15 = 8.80. Divide by the cost per minute: m = 8.80 ÷ 0.08 = 110. Answer: 110 minutes. 1.1 comes from using 8 instead of 0.08 as the cost per minute, forgetting to convert pence to pounds. 297.5 comes from dividing the whole bill by the cost per minute without subtracting the fixed fee first, 23.80 ÷ 0.08. 485 comes from adding the fixed fee to the bill instead of subtracting it, before dividing by the cost per minute, (23.80 + 15) ÷ 0.08.
- (c) x = 0 or x = 3 — Method: take out the common factor 5x: 5x(x − 3) = 0, so 5x = 0 or x − 3 = 0, giving x = 0 or x = 3. Distractor origins: x = 0 or x = 15 comes from forgetting to divide the second term by the common factor 5x correctly, leaving 15 instead of 3; x = 3 loses the solution x = 0 by dividing both sides by x; x = 5 or x = 3 mistakes the coefficient 5 itself for one of the solutions.
