Answer key
- (b) 20 — The rate is the gradient: the change in litres divided by the change in time. From 2 to 7 minutes, the tank gains 150 − 50 = 100 litres over 7 − 2 = 5 minutes, so the rate is 100 ÷ 5 = 20 litres per minute. 100 comes from working out the change in litres but forgetting to divide by the change in time. 25 comes from using only the first reading, 50 ÷ 2, and ignoring the second reading entirely. 0.05 comes from dividing the change in time by the change in litres instead of the other way round, 5 ÷ 100.
- (a) 9 m — Undo the multiplication by the bracket first: dividing both sides by 2 gives P/2 = l + w. Subtracting the length from both sides gives w = P/2 − l. Substituting the measurements, 46 ÷ 2 = 23, and 23 − 14 = 9, so the width is 9 m. Taking the length off before halving gives (46 − 14) ÷ 2 = 16, which halves the length as well; expanding to P = 2l + 2w and then forgetting to divide by 2 gives 46 − 28 = 18; subtracting the length in the wrong direction gives 23 + 14 = 37.
- (d) x = −4, y = −19 — x² + 8x − 3 = (x + 4)² − 4² − 3 = (x + 4)² − 19. Substituting x = −4: (−4)² = 16, 8 × (−4) = −32, so 16 − 32 − 3 = −19, confirming the minimum value −19 at x = −4: turning point (−4, −19). Using 8 instead of half of it inside the bracket gives (x + 8)² − 67, turning point (−8, −67) — wrong, because only half the coefficient of x belongs inside the bracket. Reading the bracket's sign directly as the turning point's x-coordinate gives (4, −19) — wrong, because (x + 4)² is zero at x = −4, not x = 4. Computing 16 + 3 = 19 instead of −3 − 16 = −19 flips the sign of the constant, giving (−4, 19) — wrong, since the completed square's constant must be evaluated as −3 minus 16, not 16 plus 3. Check by substitution whenever the sign of a constant feels uncertain.
- (d) 4 — Subtracting the second equation from the first: the y-terms cancel, and the x-terms combine as 3x − x = 2x; the right-hand sides give 14 − 6 = 8. This gives 2x = 8, so x = 4. A candidate who subtracts in the wrong order would get 2x = 6 − 14 = −8, so x = −4. A candidate who uses only the first equation, dividing 14 by 3 as if y were 0, would get x ≈ 4.67. A candidate who reports the value of y instead of x would get y = 6 − 4 = 2.
- (d) −2 — y = f(x) − 6 is f(x) shifted down by 6, so every y-value on the graph decreases by 6. At x = 0, f(0) = 4, so the new y-value is 4 − 6 = −2. Adding 6 instead of subtracting gives 10; writing down the shift itself, −6, or leaving the original value 4 unchanged both skip the translation altogether.
- (a) x = 3.5 — Method: clear the fractions by multiplying both sides by 15, expand both brackets, then collect the x terms on one side and the numbers on the other. Working: multiplying both sides by 15 gives 3(3x + 2) = 5(x + 4), which expands to 9x + 6 = 5x + 20; subtracting 5x and 6 from both sides gives 4x = 14, and dividing both sides by 4 gives x = 3.5. Answer: x = 3.5. The distractors: x = 1 comes from collecting the x terms by adding the 5x instead of subtracting it, giving 9x + 5x = 20 − 6 and so 14x = 14; x = 4.5 comes from expanding 3(3x + 2) as 9x + 2, multiplying only the x term by the 3, which leads to 4x = 18; x = 10 comes from reaching 4x = 14 correctly and then subtracting 4 instead of dividing by 4.
- (d) 5√2 — For a circle x² + y² = r², the 50 on the right-hand side is r², not r, so the radius is √50. Writing 50 as 25 × 2, the largest square factor times what remains, gives √50 = √25 × √2 = 5√2. Forgetting to square-root 50 at all and giving the value of r² instead gives 50. Halving 50 instead of taking its square root gives 25. Using 25 as the number left outside the square root sign, instead of as the number under it, gives the wrongly simplified 25√2.
- (b) h = 2A/b — The height has been multiplied by the base and the result then divided by 2, so undo the division first. Multiplying both sides by 2 gives 2A = bh. Undoing the multiplication by the base comes next: dividing both sides by b gives 2A/b = h, so h = 2A/b. Dividing by 2 instead of multiplying gives A/(2b), a quarter of the correct height; multiplying by the base instead of dividing gives 2Ab; writing b/(2A) turns the final fraction upside down.
- (a) (3, 7) — y = f(x) + 5 is a vertical translation of y = f(x) by 5 units up — the translation vector is (0, 5) — so only the y-coordinate of any point changes. Turning point (3, 2) → (3, 2 + 5) = (3, 7). Adding the 5 to the x-coordinate, or treating it as a horizontal shift like y = f(x + 5), moves the wrong coordinate — check first whether the number sits inside or outside the brackets.
- (a) 2 — The common ratio is 54 ÷ 162 = 1/3, confirmed by 18 ÷ 54 = 1/3 and 6 ÷ 18 = 1/3. The next term is 6 × 1/3 = 2. A candidate who wrongly treats the sequence as arithmetic and subtracts the last difference (18 − 6 = 12) again gets 6 − 12 = −6. A candidate who multiplies by 3 instead of dividing, effectively reversing the sequence, gets 18. A candidate who guesses the ratio is 1/2 gets 6 × 1/2 = 3.
- (a) False — 4(2x − 3) = 8x − 12, not 8x − 3. — Expand the bracket by multiplying both terms by 4: 4 × 2x = 8x and 4 × (−3) = −12, so 4(2x − 3) = 8x − 12, which is not 8x − 3 — the student is wrong. Saying 4(2x − 3) = 8x − 3 comes from multiplying only the 2x by 4 and copying the −3 across unchanged. Saying 4(2x − 3) = 2x − 12 comes from multiplying only the −3 by 4 and leaving 2x unmultiplied. Claiming it is true because both expressions are linear ignores that equivalence depends on the actual coefficients, not the type of expression.
- (c) 6,400 — 9 hours contains 9 ÷ 3 = 3 whole periods of doubling, so the population is 800 × 2³. Since 2³ = 8, the population after 9 hours is 800 × 8 = 6,400. Adding 100% growth three times instead of compounding it — treating the growth as simple, not repeated doubling — gives 800 × 4 = 3,200, which is wrong because each period doubles the CURRENT population, not the original one. Using 9 as the power instead of dividing by the 3-hour period first gives 800 × 2⁹ = 409,600, which is wrong because the exponent counts periods, not hours. Giving the growth factor 2³ = 8 on its own, without multiplying by the starting population 800, leaves the answer as 8, which is wrong because the question asks for the population, not the multiplier. Always check that your final number of periods matches the total time divided by the period length.
- (a) 3.5 km/h — Average speed is total distance ÷ total time. Total distance = 5 + 9 = 14 km. Total time, including the rest, = 1 + 1 + 2 = 4 hours. So average speed = 14 ÷ 4 = 3.5 km/h. Leaving out the 1 hour rest and dividing by only the 3 hours of walking gives 14 ÷ 3 = 4.67 km/h. Averaging the two separate speeds, 5 km/h and 4.5 km/h, instead of using total distance over total time, gives (5 + 4.5) ÷ 2 = 4.75 km/h. Dividing only the second leg's distance by the total time, 9 ÷ 4 = 2.25 km/h, ignores the first leg's distance.
- (a) x = 4 ± √13 — Method: halve the coefficient of x to form the bracket, subtract the square of that number to keep the expression equal to the original, then rearrange and take the square root of both sides. Working: half of −8 is −4, so x² − 8x + 3 = (x − 4)² − 16 + 3 = (x − 4)² − 13; setting this equal to zero gives (x − 4)² = 13, so x − 4 = ±√13 and x = 4 ± √13. Answer: x = 4 ± √13. The distractors: x = 8 ± √13 comes from putting the whole coefficient 8 inside the bracket instead of half of it; x = 4 ± √19 comes from adding 16 and 3 rather than subtracting 3 from 16; x = −4 ± √13 comes from writing the bracket as (x + 4)², which reverses the sign of the number that comes out of it.
- (b) 1.6 m/s² — Acceleration is the change in velocity divided by the time taken: (11 − 3) ÷ 5 = 8 ÷ 5 = 1.6 m/s². Forgetting to subtract the initial velocity and dividing the final velocity by the time instead gives 11 ÷ 5 = 2.2 m/s². Inverting the fraction, dividing the time by the change in velocity, gives 5 ÷ 8 = 0.625 m/s². Finding the change in velocity, 8 m/s, but stopping without dividing by the time gives 8 m/s².
