- (d) 1 — Method: find the step in the outputs for each step of 1 in the input, write the rule from that step and from one pair of values, then apply the rule to the last input. Working: the outputs −5, −3, −1 rise by 2 while x rises in ones, so x is multiplied by 2; at x = 1, 2 × 1 = 2 while y = −5, so 7 is subtracted, giving y = 2x − 7; at x = 4 the rule gives 2 × 4 = 8 and 8 − 7 = 1. Answer: y = 1. The distractors: 3 comes from carrying the outputs on one step too far, to x = 5; 0 comes from assuming the outputs −5, −3, −1 carry on by adding 1 rather than by adding 2; 8 comes from doubling the input and forgetting to subtract the 7.
- (a) 130 — Method: substitute the total bill into the formula, then subtract the fixed charge and divide by the cost per text message. Working: 24.50 = 18 + 0.05t, so 0.05t = 24.50 − 18 = 6.50, t = 6.50 ÷ 0.05 = 130. Answer: 130 extra text messages. 490 comes from dividing the whole bill by 0.05 without first subtracting the £18 fixed charge: 24.50 ÷ 0.05 = 490. 13 comes from dividing the £6.50 by 0.5 instead of 0.05, moving the decimal point one place too far: 6.50 ÷ 0.5 = 13. 65 comes from dividing the £6.50 by 0.1 instead of 0.05.
- (b) y = 2x² + 14x + 19 — A translation by the vector (−2, 0) moves the graph 2 units in the negative x-direction, which means replacing x with (x + 2): 2(x + 2)² + 6(x + 2) − 1. Expanding 2(x + 2)² gives 2x² + 8x + 8, and 6(x + 2) gives 6x + 12; collecting terms 2x² + 8x + 8 + 6x + 12 − 1 simplifies to 2x² + 14x + 19. Substituting (x − 2) instead of (x + 2) — translating in the wrong direction — gives 2(x−2)² + 6(x−2) − 1, which simplifies to 2x² − 2x − 5. Distributing the outer 2 only onto the x² term of the expansion, instead of onto every term of (x + 2)², gives 2x² + 10x + 15. Dropping the −1 when collecting the constant terms, treating 8 + 12 as 20 rather than 8 + 12 − 1 as 19, gives 2x² + 14x + 20.
- (c) y = 3x + 5 — Method: find the gradient from the two points, then substitute one point into y = mx + c to find c. Working: gradient = (14 − 2) ÷ (3 − (−1)) = 12 ÷ 4 = 3. Using the point (3, 14): 14 = 3(3) + c, so 14 = 9 + c, giving c = 5. Answer: y = 3x + 5. y = 6x − 4 comes from mishandling the negative x-coordinate, treating 3 − (−1) as 3 − 1 = 2, so the gradient becomes 12 ÷ 2 = 6, and then c = 14 − 18 = −4. y = 3x + 23 comes from a sign error isolating c, adding 9 to 14 instead of subtracting it: c = 14 + 9 = 23. y = x/3 + 13 comes from dividing the change in x by the change in y instead of the other way round, giving a gradient of 4 ÷ 12 = 1/3, and then c = 14 − 1 = 13.
- (c) x = 0, y = 3 and x = 3, y = 0 — Substitute y = 3 − x into x² + y² = 9: x² + (3 − x)² = 9. Expanding (3 − x)² = 9 − 6x + x² gives x² + 9 − 6x + x² = 9, which simplifies to 2x² − 6x = 0, or 2x(x − 3) = 0, so x = 0 or x = 3. Using y = 3 − x: x = 0 gives y = 3; x = 3 gives y = 0. Distractor routes: x = 0, y = 3 alone stops after the factor 2x = 0 and never checks the second factor, x − 3 = 0. x = 0, y = 3 and x = −3, y = 6 comes from factorising 2x² − 6x as 2x(x + 3), a sign error that gives a second root of −3 instead of 3. x = 0, y = 3 and x = 6, y = −3 comes from expanding (3 − x)² as 9 − 6x, dropping the x² term, which changes the quadratic to x² − 6x = 0 and its second root to 6.
- (b) 5 — Method: expand the bracket first, then solve the resulting linear equation. Working: 3(2x − 1) = 6x − 3, so 6x − 3 = 27. Add 3 to both sides: 6x = 30. Divide by 6: x = 5. Answer: 5. 4 2/3 comes from multiplying only the 2x inside the bracket by 3 and forgetting to multiply the −1 as well, giving 6x − 1 = 27. 4 comes from a sign error when expanding, writing 6x + 3 instead of 6x − 3. 4.5 comes from dividing 27 by 3 to get 2x − 1 = 9, then forgetting to add 1 back before dividing by 2, using 2x = 9 instead of 2x = 10.
- (a) 2 — The candle's height falls from 30 cm to 20 cm, a drop of 10 cm, over 5 minutes, so m = 10 ÷ 5 = 2. 10 comes from using the drop in height but forgetting to divide by the time. 0.5 comes from dividing the time by the drop instead of the drop by the time (5 ÷ 10). 4 comes from dividing the final height by the time, 20 ÷ 5, instead of using the drop in height.
- (d) 400 m — The distance travelled equals the area under the speed-time graph. The first 10 seconds form a triangle with base 10 and height 20, giving an area of 0.5 × 10 × 20 = 100 m. The next 15 seconds form a rectangle with base 15 and height 20, giving an area of 15 × 20 = 300 m. The total distance is 100 + 300 = 400 m. The option 500 m treats the whole 25 seconds as travelled at the constant 20 m/s, ignoring that the speed was building up during the first 10 seconds: 25 × 20 = 500. The option 300 m only counts the constant-speed section and forgets the triangle section entirely. The option 200 m comes from working out the triangle's area without halving it (10 × 20 = 200) and forgetting the rectangle altogether.
- (d) 2 — The gradient between two points on a line is the change in y divided by the change in x. Using (5, 2) and (0, −8): (2 − (−8)) ÷ (5 − 0) = 10 ÷ 5 = 2. Inverting the fraction, dividing the change in x by the change in y instead, gives 5 ÷ 10 = 0.5. Reversing the order of the x-values in the denominator, giving (2 − (−8)) ÷ (0 − 5) = 10 ÷ (−5), gives −2. Misreading the y-intercept as 8 instead of −8, giving (2 − 8) ÷ 5 = −6 ÷ 5, gives −1.2.
- (d) (5x − 1)/(x² − x − 2) — The common denominator is (x + 1)(x − 2) = x² − x − 2. The numerator becomes 2(x − 2) + 3(x + 1) = (2x − 4) + (3x + 3) = 5x − 1, so the sum is (5x − 1)/(x² − x − 2). Choosing 5/(2x − 1) adds the numerators (2 + 3 = 5) and the denominators ((x + 1) + (x − 2) = 2x − 1) directly, which is not how fractions add. Choosing (5x + 1)/(x² − x − 2) comes from expanding 2(x − 2) as 2x − 2 instead of 2x − 4, losing part of the constant term. Choosing (5x − 1)/(x² + x − 2) has the correct numerator but the wrong sign on the x-term when (x + 1)(x − 2) is expanded.
- (d) 26 — Method: expand both brackets, treating the second as multiplication by −2 so that both of its terms change sign, then collect like terms. Working: 2(a + 6) = 2a + 12 and −2(a − 7) = −2a + 14, so the expression becomes 2a + 12 − 2a + 14; the a terms give 2a − 2a = 0, so no term in a survives, and the numbers give 12 + 14 = 26. Answer: 26. The distractors: −2 comes from expanding the second bracket as −2a − 14, so that the numbers give 12 − 14; 4a − 2 comes from adding 2(a − 7) instead of subtracting it, giving 2a + 12 + 2a − 14; 13 comes from multiplying the 2 over only the first term of each bracket, giving 2a + 6 − 2a + 7.
- (a) 8 — f(x − 1) means every input to f is reduced by 1 before it is looked up. At x = 2, the input to f becomes 2 − 1 = 1, so f(x − 1) at x = 2 is f(1) = 8. Reading f(2) = 4 directly from the table, without applying the shift, gives 4. Shifting in the wrong direction, using x + 1 = 3 instead of x − 1 = 1, gives f(3) = 1. Confusing f(x − 1) with f(x) − 1 — taking f(2) = 4 and then subtracting 1 — gives 3.
- (d) Yes: the 8th term is 50 − 8 × 7 = −6, which is negative. — Method: find the 8th term by subtracting 8 a total of 7 times from the first term, since the 1st term itself needs 0 subtractions. Working: 8th term = 50 − 8 × 7 = 50 − 56 = −6, which is negative, so Priya is correct. Answer: Yes, the 8th term is 50 − 8 × 7 = −6, which is negative. The "50 − 8 × 6 = 2" option subtracts 8 only six times instead of seven, an off-by-one error in counting the steps. The "50 − 8 × 8 = −14" option subtracts 8 eight times instead of seven, the opposite off-by-one error. The claim that repeated subtraction "can never go negative" ignores that subtracting enough times from any starting value eventually gives a negative result.
- (a) (15, 0) — Method: the tangent is perpendicular to the radius at the point of contact, so find the gradient of the radius, take its negative reciprocal, write the equation of the tangent, then substitute y = 0 because every point on the x-axis has y-coordinate 0. Working: the radius from (0, 0) to (3, 6) has gradient 6 ÷ 3 = 2, so the tangent has gradient −1/2. Substituting into y − 6 = −1/2(x − 3) gives y = −0.5x + 7.5. Setting y = 0 gives 0.5x = 7.5, so x = 15 and P is (15, 0). Answer: (15, 0). The distractors: (0, 7.5) is where the same tangent crosses the y-axis, reached by setting x = 0 instead of y = 0; (0, 0) comes from using the gradient of the radius, 2, for the tangent, which gives the line y = 2x through the centre and so crosses the x-axis at the origin; (6, 0) comes from changing the sign of the radius gradient without turning it upside down, which gives y = −2x + 12.
- (c) Line D — Method: the steeper of two lines is the one whose gradient is greater, and the gradient of a line through two points is the change in y divided by the change in x. Working: line C rises 2 for a run of 4, so its gradient is 2 ÷ 4 = 1/2; the other line rises 2 for a run of 2, so its gradient is 2 ÷ 2 = 1; since 1 is greater than 1/2, it is line D that is the steeper. Answer: Line D. The distractors: Line C is chosen by comparing the x-coordinates and calling the line that reaches further along the x-axis the steeper one; They are equally steep comes from comparing only the y-coordinates, which are both 2, without dividing by the two different runs; There is not enough information comes from believing that a gradient can only be measured off a drawn graph, when two points on a line are enough to work it out.
