Answer key
- (b) £105 — The hourly charge is 25 × 3 = £75. Adding the call-out fee: £75 + £30 = £105. A candidate who forgets the call-out fee gives just the hourly charge, £75. A candidate who adds the call-out fee to the hourly rate before multiplying by the hours, (30 + 25) × 3, gets £165. A candidate who multiplies the call-out fee by the number of hours instead of the hourly rate, 30 × 3, gets £90.
- (b) 1.6 m/s² — Acceleration is the change in velocity divided by the time taken: (11 − 3) ÷ 5 = 8 ÷ 5 = 1.6 m/s². Forgetting to subtract the initial velocity and dividing the final velocity by the time instead gives 11 ÷ 5 = 2.2 m/s². Inverting the fraction, dividing the time by the change in velocity, gives 5 ÷ 8 = 0.625 m/s². Finding the change in velocity, 8 m/s, but stopping without dividing by the time gives 8 m/s².
- (c) t = 1 second and t = 5 seconds — The ball is at ground level when h = 0, which happens when either bracket is zero. t − 1 = 0 gives t = 1, and 5 − t = 0 gives t = 5. The option with t = −1 makes a sign error solving the first bracket. The option with t = −5 makes a sign error solving the second bracket, treating 5 − t = 0 as if it gave a negative solution. The option with t = 4 seconds is an arithmetic slip in solving 5 − t = 0.
- (d) x = (y + 3)/4 — Two operations have been applied to x: it has been multiplied by 4 and then 3 has been subtracted. Undo them in the opposite order. Adding 3 to both sides gives y + 3 = 4x. Dividing both sides by 4 then gives (y + 3)/4 = x, so x = (y + 3)/4. The bracket matters: writing y/4 + 3 divides only the y by 4 and leaves the 3 untouched. Writing (y − 3)/4 subtracts the 3 instead of adding it, and writing 4(y + 3) multiplies by 4 rather than dividing.
- (c) 7n − 1 — Method: find the common difference, then find the constant that fits the first term. Working: 13 − 6 = 7, 20 − 13 = 7, 27 − 20 = 7, so the terms increase by 7 each time and the nth term has the form 7n + c. Substituting n = 1: 7(1) + c = 6, so c = −1. Answer: the nth term is 7n − 1. The value 7n comes from leaving out the constant altogether. The value 7n + 6 comes from using the first term as the constant directly, without subtracting the common difference first. The value 6n + 1 comes from using the first term, 6, as the coefficient of n instead of the common difference, and then attaching +1 with the sign of the constant flipped.
- (b) y = 2x − 1 — Method: in a rule that multiplies and then adds, the multiplier is the step in the outputs for each step of 1 in the input, and the number added on is the output when the input is 0. Working: the inputs 0, 1, 2 rise in ones while the outputs −1, 1, 3 rise by 2 each time, so the input is multiplied by 2; an input of 0 gives 2 × 0 = 0 and the output must be −1, so 1 is subtracted. Answer: y = 2x − 1, checked against the last pair by 2 × 2 − 1 = 3. The distractors: y = 2x + 1 comes from finding the multiplier 2 correctly and then reading the output at an input of 0 as +1 instead of −1; y = x − 1 comes from taking the multiplier as 1 because the inputs go up in ones, instead of using the step in the outputs; y = 3x − 1 comes from reading the largest output, 3, as the multiplier.
- (a) n² + n — n² + n = n(n + 1), the product of two consecutive integers. One of any two consecutive integers is always even, so their product is always even, whatever whole number n is. n² − n + 1 = n(n − 1) + 1 is always ODD, since n(n − 1) is even and adding 1 makes it odd — the opposite of what's asked. 2n + 1 is always odd by definition, not even. n² + 1 is not always even at all: it depends on whether n is odd or even, and testing n = 2 gives 5, which is odd.
- (b) −3 — Method: the gradient of a straight line is the change in y divided by the change in x, with the two coordinates taken in the same order in the numerator as in the denominator. Working: going from (−1, 5) to (3, −7), the change in y is −7 − 5 = −12 and the change in x is 3 − (−1) = 4, so the gradient is −12 ÷ 4 = −3. Answer: −3. The distractors: 3 comes from subtracting the y-coordinates in one order and the x-coordinates in the other, giving 12 ÷ 4; −1/3 comes from dividing the change in x by the change in y instead of the other way round, giving 4 ÷ (−12); −6 comes from working out 3 − (−1) as 3 − 1 = 2, so that the change in y is divided by 2 rather than by 4.
- (b) 8 — Method: a circle centred on the origin has equation x² + y² = r², where r is the radius, so the number on the right-hand side is the square of the radius and not the radius itself. Working: comparing x² + y² = 64 with x² + y² = r² gives r² = 64, so r = √64 = 8. Answer: the radius is 8. The distractors: 64 is r² read straight off the equation as though the right-hand side were the radius, which is the commonest error on this form; 32 comes from halving 64, treating the right-hand side as a diameter that has to be halved; 16 is the diameter, 2 × 8, quoted in place of the radius.
- (c) 90° — The graph of y = tan x has a vertical asymptote at x = 90°, the smallest positive value for which it is undefined. tan 0° = 0, a defined value, not an undefined one — confusing where the graph equals zero with where it is undefined gives 0°. x = 270° is also a value where y = tan x is undefined, but it is not the smallest positive one, since 90° comes first. tan 45° = 1, a defined value — confusing the asymptote with the angle at which tan x = 1 gives 45°.
- (c) (6n + 4)/2 — Six full boxes hold 6 lots of n pencils, which is 6n, and the 4 loose pencils are added on, so the shop has 6n + 4 pencils altogether. Sharing them equally between 2 classes divides that whole total by 2, and brackets are what show that the division applies to all of it: (6n + 4)/2. Without the brackets, 6n + 4/2 halves only the loose pencils; 6(n + 4)/2 adds the loose pencils to every box before the division; 2(6n + 4) doubles the total instead of halving it.
- (a) 3y² — 'y squared, multiplied by 3' means the square is applied to y only, and the result is then multiplied by 3, written as 3y². Writing y³ mistakes the multiplication by 3 for an extra factor of y, adding to the power instead of using a coefficient. Writing (3y)² squares the whole of 3y, including the 3, which gives 9y² rather than 3y² — the square should apply to y alone. Writing 3 + y² adds the 3 instead of multiplying by it. The expression for 'y squared, multiplied by 3' is 3y².
- (d) 110 — Method: form the equation 15 + 0.08m = 23.80, where m is the number of minutes, then solve for m. Working: subtract the fixed fee: 0.08m = 23.80 − 15 = 8.80. Divide by the cost per minute: m = 8.80 ÷ 0.08 = 110. Answer: 110 minutes. 1.1 comes from using 8 instead of 0.08 as the cost per minute, forgetting to convert pence to pounds. 297.5 comes from dividing the whole bill by the cost per minute without subtracting the fixed fee first, 23.80 ÷ 0.08. 485 comes from adding the fixed fee to the bill instead of subtracting it, before dividing by the cost per minute, (23.80 + 15) ÷ 0.08.
- (d) (3x − 2)(x + 4) — For 3x² + 10x − 8, find two numbers multiplying to 3 × (−8) = −24 and adding to 10: these are 12 and −2. Rewrite: 3x² + 12x − 2x − 8 = 3x(x + 4) − 2(x + 4) = (3x − 2)(x + 4). Choosing (3x + 2)(x − 4) expands to 3x² − 10x − 8 — the correct factor pair but the wrong signs, giving the middle term the wrong sign. Choosing (x − 2)(3x + 4) expands to 3x² − 2x − 8 — the 3 is attached to the wrong bracket, changing which terms combine for the x-coefficient. Choosing (3x − 4)(x + 2) expands to 3x² + 2x − 8 — this uses 4 and 2 instead of the correct pair 12 and 2, so the middle term does not come to 10x.
- (b) 5 — From x + y = 7, x = 7 − y. Substituting into 3x + 2y = 16: 3(7 − y) + 2y = 16, so 21 − 3y + 2y = 16, giving 21 − y = 16, so y = 5 (then x = 2). A candidate who forgets to multiply the y-term inside the bracket by 3 would write 21 − y + 2y = 16, giving 21 + y = 16, so y = −5. A candidate who subtracts the two equations directly, (3x + 2y) − (x + y) = 16 − 7, gets 2x + y = 9, and if they wrongly treat this as giving y alone, ignoring the x term, they would answer 9. A candidate who reports the value of x instead of y would answer 2.
