- 15.An equation has exactly one value of x that makes it true, but an identity is true for every value of x. Which of these best explains why 3x + 5 = 20 is an equation rather than an identity?
Answer key
- (b) 5 — Set n² + 4n = 45, so n² + 4n − 45 = 0. This factorises as (n + 9)(n − 5) = 0, giving n = −9 or n = 5. Since a term number must be positive, n = 5. Taking the magnitude of the rejected negative solution, 9, instead of discarding it, gives 9. Dividing 45 by the coefficient of n and ignoring the n² term entirely, 45 ÷ 4 = 11.25, rounded to the nearest whole number, gives 11. Dropping the linear term 4n and solving n² = 45 instead, the nearest whole number to √45 = 6.708 is 7.
- (a) −2 m/s² — The gradient of a line through two points is the change in the y-value divided by the change in the x-value: (6 − 22)/(16 − 8) = −16/8 = −2 m/s². The negative sign confirms the deceleration mentioned in the question. Writing 2 m/s² comes from subtracting the velocities in the wrong order, using (22 − 6) instead of (6 − 22), which loses the sign that shows the car is slowing down. Writing −0.5 m/s² comes from inverting the fraction, dividing the change in time by the change in velocity instead of the other way round. Writing −16 m/s² comes from finding the change in velocity, −16, but forgetting to divide by the change in time, 8 seconds.
- (c) x = 5, y = 5 — x² − 10x + 30 = (x − 5)² − 5² + 30 = (x − 5)² + 5. Substituting x = 5: 5² = 25, 10 × 5 = 50, so 25 − 50 + 30 = 5, confirming the minimum value 5 at x = 5: turning point (5, 5). Using −10 instead of half of it inside the bracket gives (x − 10)² − 70, turning point (10, −70) — wrong, because only half the coefficient of x belongs inside the bracket. Reading the bracket's sign directly as the turning point's x-coordinate gives (−5, 5) — wrong, because (x − 5)² is zero at x = 5, not x = −5. Computing 25 − 30 = −5 instead of 30 − 25 = 5 flips the sign of the constant, giving (5, −5) — wrong, since the completed square's constant must be evaluated as 30 minus 25, not 25 minus 30. Always check a turning point by substituting its x-value back into the original equation.
- (b) 5 — From x + y = 7, x = 7 − y. Substituting into 3x + 2y = 16: 3(7 − y) + 2y = 16, so 21 − 3y + 2y = 16, giving 21 − y = 16, so y = 5 (then x = 2). A candidate who forgets to multiply the y-term inside the bracket by 3 would write 21 − y + 2y = 16, giving 21 + y = 16, so y = −5. A candidate who subtracts the two equations directly, (3x + 2y) − (x + y) = 16 − 7, gets 2x + y = 9, and if they wrongly treat this as giving y alone, ignoring the x term, they would answer 9. A candidate who reports the value of x instead of y would answer 2.
- (b) 20 — The rate is the gradient: the change in litres divided by the change in time. From 2 to 7 minutes, the tank gains 150 − 50 = 100 litres over 7 − 2 = 5 minutes, so the rate is 100 ÷ 5 = 20 litres per minute. 100 comes from working out the change in litres but forgetting to divide by the change in time. 25 comes from using only the first reading, 50 ÷ 2, and ignoring the second reading entirely. 0.05 comes from dividing the change in time by the change in litres instead of the other way round, 5 ÷ 100.
- (a) 20 — Method: the paper has run out when S = 0, so substitute S = 0 into the equation and solve for t. Working: 0 = 480 − 24t, so 24t = 480, and t = 480 / 24 = 20. Answer: it takes 20 minutes. The value 480 comes from giving the starting number of sheets, the intercept of the equation, instead of solving for t. The value 456 comes from working out 480 − 24 and stopping after one step instead of solving the equation fully. The value 0.05 comes from inverting the division, working out 24 / 480 instead of 480 / 24.
- (c) 5n + 1 — Method: find the common difference, then use it as the coefficient of n in the position-to-term rule, and find the constant by checking against the first term. Working: the common difference is 5, so the rule has the form 5n + c. Using the 1st term: 5(1) + c = 6, so c = 1. The rule is 5n + 1. Answer: 5n + 1. 5n − 1 uses the correct coefficient but the wrong sign for the constant. 6n comes from using the first term as the coefficient of n instead of the common difference — it matches the 1st term by coincidence but fails from the 2nd term onward. n + 5 swaps the coefficient and the constant around, using the common difference as the constant instead of the coefficient of n.
- (d) 45 — v = s ÷ t = 180 ÷ 4 = 45 km/h. 720 comes from multiplying s and t instead of dividing, 180 × 4. 184 comes from adding s and t instead of dividing, 180 + 4. 176 comes from subtracting t from s instead of dividing, 180 − 4.
- (b) £2.00 — Subtracting the second equation from the first eliminates the pastries: (3c + 2p) − (2c + 2p) = 9.60 − 7.60, so c = 2.00. A candidate who divides the first total by the number of coffees alone, ignoring the pastries, would get 9.60 ÷ 3 = £3.20. A candidate who finds the price of a pastry instead of a coffee — using c = 2.00 in 2c + 2p = 7.60 to get p = 1.80 — would answer £1.80. A candidate who reaches the correct difference of £2.00 but then mistakenly divides again or misplaces the decimal point would get £0.20.
- (c) 5 — Method: call the number of years ago t, take t off both ages, and form an equation from the comparison at that time. Working: t years ago the father was 40 − t and Ethan was 10 − t, so 40 − t = 7(10 − t); expanding gives 40 − t = 70 − 7t, adding 7t to both sides gives 40 + 6t = 70, subtracting 40 gives 6t = 30, and dividing by 6 gives t = 5. Checking: five years ago the father was 35 and Ethan was 5, and 35 = 7 × 5. Answer: 5. The distractors: 35 comes from finding the right moment but giving the father's age at that time instead of the number of years; 30 comes from using Ethan's present age on the right-hand side, 40 − t = 7 × 10, which gives t = −30 and is then written as 30; 24 comes from reaching 6t = 30 correctly and subtracting 6 instead of dividing by 6.
- (a) 55 − 5n — The number of chairs decreases by 5 in each row after the first, so the common difference is d=−5, and the first term is a=50. The nth term is a+(n−1)d = 50+(n−1)(−5) = 50−5n+5 = 55−5n. A candidate who uses the common difference as the constant term instead of correctly finding 55, giving the constant as −5 instead, would write −5n−5. A candidate who uses the first term, 50, as the coefficient of n instead of the common difference, would write 50n−5. A candidate who does not multiply the common difference by n at all, treating the nth term as n+d instead of dn+c, would write n−5.
- (b) 4.39 — x₁ = ∛(150 − 3 × 4²) = ∛(150 − 48) = ∛102 = 4.672 (unrounded). x₂ = ∛(150 − 3 × 4.672²) = ∛(150 − 65.49) = ∛84.51 = 4.39 (2 d.p.). Choosing 4.67 stops after only one iteration, giving x₁ instead of x₂. Choosing 84.51 finds the value inside the cube root for x₂ but never takes the cube root. Choosing 6.32 comes from adding 3xₙ² instead of subtracting it inside the root, which does not match the given formula.
- (d) 5n + 4 — Method: find the common difference, then find the constant that fits the first term. Working: 14 − 9 = 5, 19 − 14 = 5, 24 − 19 = 5, so the terms increase by 5 each time and the nth term has the form 5n + c. Substituting n = 1: 5(1) + c = 9, so c = 4. Answer: the nth term is 5n + 4. The value 5n comes from leaving out the constant. The value 5n + 9 comes from using the first term as the constant directly, without subtracting the common difference first. The value 9n + 5 comes from swapping the roles of the first term and the common difference — using the first term, 9, as the coefficient of n and the difference, 5, as the constant.
- (c) h = V / (lw) — Method: undo the multiplication by lw by dividing both sides by lw. Working: V = lwh, so dividing both sides by lw gives h = V / (lw). The value h = V − lw comes from subtracting lw instead of dividing by it. The value h = Vlw comes from multiplying by lw instead of dividing. The value h = lw / V comes from inverting the fraction, dividing lw by V instead of V by lw.
- (c) Only x = 5 satisfies 3x + 5 = 20, not every value of x. — 3x + 5 = 20 is only true when x = 5, since 3 × 5 + 5 = 20; for any other value of x the two sides are not equal, so it is an equation, not an identity. Saying it cannot be simplified confuses simplifying with the equation/identity distinction, which is about how many values of x make it true. Saying it has an = sign is not a valid test, since identities are also written with an = or ≡ sign. A number on the right-hand side does not decide it either — what matters is whether both sides match for every value of x, not the form of the right-hand side.
