- (a) y = 2ˣ — An exponential graph y = 2ˣ passes through (0, 1) since 2⁰ = 1, rises more and more steeply for positive x, and has the x-axis as an asymptote as x becomes very negative, since 2ˣ gets closer to 0 without ever reaching it. y = x² + 1 also passes through (0, 1) and also rises steeply for positive x, but as x becomes very negative it rises to infinity too, rather than settling towards the x-axis — mistaking any curve that gets steeper for an exponential misses this. y = x³ + 1 passes through (0, 1) and rises for positive x, but as x becomes very negative it falls towards negative infinity rather than approaching the x-axis from above. y = 1 − x² also passes through (0, 1), but it falls for large positive x rather than rising — a candidate who checks only the y-intercept, without reading the described shape of the curve, could pick this.
- (b) 235 litres — The flow rate at t = 10 is the gradient of the tangent: change in volume ÷ change in time = (190 − 130) ÷ (12 − 8) = 60 ÷ 4 = 15 litres per minute. Treating this rate as roughly constant for a short interval, the volume 5 minutes after t = 10 is estimated as 160 + 5 × 15 = 235 litres. Using the tangent's own point spacing — 2 minutes, from t = 10 to t = 12 — instead of the 5 minutes actually asked for gives 160 + 2 × 15 = 190, which is just the volume already given at one of the tangent's own points, not an answer to the question asked. Multiplying the gradient by the time WITHOUT adding the starting volume, 5 × 15 = 75, forgets that a rate estimates a CHANGE, which must be added to the starting volume, not given as the answer on its own. Subtracting instead of adding, 160 − 5 × 15 = 85, extrapolates backward in time rather than forward.
- (a) 7 — Multiply the input by 2: 6 × 2 = 12. Then subtract 5: 12 − 5 = 7. A candidate who does the operations in the wrong order, subtracting 5 first and then multiplying by 2, gets (6 − 5) × 2 = 2. A candidate who only carries out the multiplication and forgets to subtract gets 12. A candidate who adds 5 instead of subtracting gets 6 × 2 + 5 = 17.
- (c) 2 — At x = 1, y = 1² − 3(1) = 1 − 3 = −2. At x = 4, y = 4² − 3(4) = 16 − 12 = 4. Gradient of the chord = change in y ÷ change in x = (4 − (−2)) ÷ (4 − 1) = 6 ÷ 3 = 2. Writing down the change in y, 6, and stopping there without dividing by the change in x gives 6. Losing the negative sign on y = −2 at x = 1 and treating it as +2 gives (4 − 2) ÷ (4 − 1) = 2 ÷ 3 = 2/3. Dividing the wrong way round, change in x ÷ change in y, gives (4 − 1) ÷ (4 − (−2)) = 3 ÷ 6 = 1/2.
- (c) (2, 5) — Reflecting in the x-axis keeps the x-coordinate the same and changes the sign of the y-coordinate: Q = (2, 5). (−2, −5) comes from reflecting in the y-axis instead, which changes the sign of the x-coordinate. (−2, 5) comes from reflecting in both axes. (2, −5) comes from not applying the reflection at all.
- (d) x = (y + 8) / 3 — Method: add 8 to both sides, then divide the whole side by 3. Working: y = 3x − 8, so adding 8 to both sides gives y + 8 = 3x, then dividing both sides by 3 gives x = (y + 8) / 3. The value x = y + 8 / 3 is Priya's version, which comes from dividing only the 8 by 3 instead of dividing the whole expression y + 8 by 3. The value x = (y − 8) / 3 comes from a sign error, keeping −8 instead of moving it to +8. The value x = 3(y + 8) comes from multiplying by 3 instead of dividing.
- (a) 2/5 — Method: compare the equation with y = mx + c, where m is the gradient. Working: in y = (2x/5) − 3, the coefficient of x is 2/5. Answer: the gradient is 2/5. −3 comes from confusing the gradient with the y-intercept. 5/2 comes from inverting the fraction that multiplies x. −2/5 comes from wrongly carrying the negative sign from the −3 term onto the coefficient of x.
- (a) 45 — The ratio between the two given points, one power of x apart, gives b: 405 ÷ 135 = 3, so b = 3. Substituting back, at x = 1, y = A × b, so 135 = A × 3, giving A = 45. Giving the common ratio b itself instead of A confuses which unknown was asked for and produces 3 — wrong, because the question asks for A, not b. Giving 135 instead treats the first given point as the y-intercept and reads A off it directly — wrong, because that point is at x = 1, not x = 0, so 135 is A × b, not A. Assuming A equals b⁰ = 1 by itself, rather than substituting a known point to solve for A, gives 1 — wrong, because b⁰ is always 1 regardless of A; A must be found using an actual (x, y) pair from the graph.
- (d) 8 — Method: write both present ages in terms of one letter, take four years off each of them, and form an equation from the comparison four years ago. Working: let Amelia be y, so her mother is 3y; four years ago they were y − 4 and 3y − 4, giving 3y − 4 = 5(y − 4); expanding gives 3y − 4 = 5y − 20; adding 20 and subtracting 3y from both sides gives 16 = 2y, and dividing by 2 gives y = 8. Checking: Amelia is 8 and her mother 24; four years ago they were 4 and 20, and 20 = 5 × 4. Answer: 8. The distractors: 4 comes from solving correctly but giving Amelia's age four years ago instead of her age now; 16 comes from stopping at 2y = 16 and giving 16 as her age; 2 comes from collecting the y terms by adding the 5y instead of subtracting it, giving 3y + 5y = 20 − 4 and so 8y = 16.
- (d) Yes: the 8th term is 50 − 8 × 7 = −6, which is negative. — Method: find the 8th term by subtracting 8 a total of 7 times from the first term, since the 1st term itself needs 0 subtractions. Working: 8th term = 50 − 8 × 7 = 50 − 56 = −6, which is negative, so Priya is correct. Answer: Yes, the 8th term is 50 − 8 × 7 = −6, which is negative. The "50 − 8 × 6 = 2" option subtracts 8 only six times instead of seven, an off-by-one error in counting the steps. The "50 − 8 × 8 = −14" option subtracts 8 eight times instead of seven, the opposite off-by-one error. The claim that repeated subtraction "can never go negative" ignores that subtracting enough times from any starting value eventually gives a negative result.
- (b) x = 2, y = −5 — 2x² − 8x + 3 rewrites as 2(x² − 4x) + 3, then as 2[(x − 2)² − 4] + 3, which simplifies to 2(x − 2)² − 5, since −2 × 4 + 3 = −5. Substituting x = 2: 2 × 2² = 8, 8 × 2 = 16, so 8 − 16 + 3 = −5, confirming the minimum value −5 at x = 2: turning point x = 2, y = −5. Halving b instead of halving b/a — using 4 as the shift instead of 2 — lands on turning point x = 4, y = −29, which is wrong because when a ≠ 1 the shift inside the bracket is b/(2a), not b/a alone. Reading the bracket's sign directly as the turning point's x-coordinate gives x = −2, y = −5 — wrong, because (x − 2)² is zero at x = 2, not x = −2. Computing 8 − 3 = 5 instead of 3 − 8 = −5 flips the sign of the constant, giving x = 2, y = 5 — wrong, since the completed square's constant must be evaluated as 3 minus 8, not 8 minus 3. Whenever a ≠ 1, factor a out of the x² and x terms first, and always check a turning point by substituting back into the original equation.
- (c) 12 cm — For a square, area = side². So side² = 144, giving side = ±12. Since a length must be positive, the side length is 12 cm. A candidate who gives both square roots without rejecting the negative one, which cannot be a length, answers 12 cm or −12 cm. A candidate who halves 144 instead of taking its square root gets 72 cm. A candidate who divides 144 by 4, confusing the area formula with a perimeter calculation, gets 36 cm.
- (c) 5 — Method: substitute the value into the formula, work out the index first and the addition afterwards. Working: x² = (−2) × (−2) = 4, so y = 4 + 1 = 5. Answer: 5. The distractors: −3 comes from squaring only the 2 and keeping the minus sign outside the index, giving −4 + 1; 1 comes from adding the 1 to x before squaring, giving (−2 + 1)²; 4 comes from squaring correctly but stopping there and never adding the 1.
- (d) (5x − 1)/(x² − x − 2) — The common denominator is (x + 1)(x − 2) = x² − x − 2. The numerator becomes 2(x − 2) + 3(x + 1) = (2x − 4) + (3x + 3) = 5x − 1, so the sum is (5x − 1)/(x² − x − 2). Choosing 5/(2x − 1) adds the numerators (2 + 3 = 5) and the denominators ((x + 1) + (x − 2) = 2x − 1) directly, which is not how fractions add. Choosing (5x + 1)/(x² − x − 2) comes from expanding 2(x − 2) as 2x − 2 instead of 2x − 4, losing part of the constant term. Choosing (5x − 1)/(x² + x − 2) has the correct numerator but the wrong sign on the x-term when (x + 1)(x − 2) is expanded.
- (b) 12.7 m/s — Find the total distance from the area under the graph, then divide by the total time. Break the graph into its four straight sections: a triangle from (0, 0) to (5, 20), where 5 × 20 = 100 gives an area of 50 m when halved; a rectangle from (5, 20) to (12, 20), area 7 × 20 = 140 m; a trapezium from (12, 20) to (16, 4), where (20 + 4) × 4 = 96 gives an area of 48 m when halved; and a rectangle from (16, 4) to (20, 4), area 4 × 4 = 16 m — a total distance of 50 + 140 + 48 + 16 = 254 m. Dividing by the 20 seconds gives an average speed of 254 ÷ 20 = 12.7 m/s. Writing 15.1 m/s comes from forgetting to halve the trapezium area for the third section, using 96 instead of 48: a total of 302 m, and 302 ÷ 20 = 15.1 m/s. Writing 11.9 m/s comes from leaving out the final section, from (16, 4) to (20, 4), entirely: a total of 238 m, and 238 ÷ 20 = 11.9 m/s. Writing 12.1 m/s comes from dividing the correct total distance by 21 instead of 20 — a fencepost slip, counting the whole seconds from t = 0 to t = 20 inclusive as 21 seconds of travel rather than reading the journey as a duration of 20 seconds: 254 ÷ 21 = 12.1 m/s (1 d.p.).
