Answer key
- (a) £14.50 — Method: the first 200 minutes are already covered by the £12, so only 250 − 200 = 50 minutes are charged extra. Extra charge = 50 × £0.05 = £2.50. Total cost = £12 + £2.50 = £14.50. Distractor origins: £24.50 charges 5p for all 250 minutes instead of only the 50 minutes over 200 (250 × £0.05 = £12.50, plus £12 = £24.50); £12.50 makes that same slip of charging all 250 minutes but then forgets to add the £12 monthly fee; £13.50 works out 250 − 200 wrongly as 30 extra minutes instead of 50 (30 × £0.05 = £1.50, plus £12 = £13.50).
- (d) x = 0 or x = 6 — Method: factorise by taking out the common factor x: x(x − 6) = 0, so x = 0 or x − 6 = 0, giving x = 0 or x = 6. Distractor origins: x = 6 comes from dividing both sides by x, which loses the solution x = 0; x = 0 stops after finding only one factor; x = 3 comes from halving the coefficient of x instead of factorising.
- (d) 12 m — Method: give the width a letter, write the length in terms of it and use length × width = area to form a quadratic. Working: with a width of x metres the length is x + 4, so x(x + 4) = 96, which rearranges to x² + 4x − 96 = 0; factorising gives (x + 12)(x − 8) = 0, and a width must be positive, so x = 8 and the length is 8 + 4 = 12. Answer: 12 m, and 12 × 8 = 96 as the area requires. The distractors: 8 m is the width rather than the length asked for; 16 m comes from taking the other root as 12 and adding 4 to it, ignoring that the root −12 cannot be a width; 24 m comes from dividing the area by the 4 in the question instead of forming an equation.
- (d) 2x² − 4x + 3 — fg(x) means f(g(x)): substitute g(x) into f in place of x. g(x) = x − 1, so fg(x) = f(x − 1) = 2(x − 1)² + 1. Expanding (x − 1)² = x² − 2x + 1, so fg(x) = 2(x² − 2x + 1) + 1 = 2x² − 4x + 2 + 1 = 2x² − 4x + 3. Writing 2x² comes from working out gf(x) instead — g(f(x)) = f(x) − 1 = (2x² + 1) − 1 = 2x², which applies the functions in the wrong order. Writing 2x² − 1 comes from expanding (x − 1)² as x² − 1, dropping the middle term, so f(x − 1) becomes 2(x² − 1) + 1 = 2x² − 2 + 1 = 2x² − 1. Writing 2x² − 4x + 2 comes from expanding correctly but forgetting the final + 1 from f, stopping at 2(x² − 2x + 1) = 2x² − 4x + 2.
- (d) (5x − 1)/(x² − x − 2) — The common denominator is (x + 1)(x − 2) = x² − x − 2. The numerator becomes 2(x − 2) + 3(x + 1) = (2x − 4) + (3x + 3) = 5x − 1, so the sum is (5x − 1)/(x² − x − 2). Choosing 5/(2x − 1) adds the numerators (2 + 3 = 5) and the denominators ((x + 1) + (x − 2) = 2x − 1) directly, which is not how fractions add. Choosing (5x + 1)/(x² − x − 2) comes from expanding 2(x − 2) as 2x − 2 instead of 2x − 4, losing part of the constant term. Choosing (5x − 1)/(x² + x − 2) has the correct numerator but the wrong sign on the x-term when (x + 1)(x − 2) is expanded.
- (d) 7 — Method: set up the equation 2.50 + 1.80m = 15.10, then subtract the booking fee and divide by the cost per mile. Working: 1.80m = 15.10 − 2.50 = 12.60; m = 12.60 ÷ 1.80 = 7. Answer: 7 miles. 8.39 comes from dividing the whole £15.10 by £1.80 without first subtracting the booking fee: 15.10 ÷ 1.80 ≈ 8.39. 5.32 comes from swapping the two amounts round, subtracting £1.80 and dividing by £2.50: (15.10 − 1.80) ÷ 2.50 ≈ 5.32. 9.78 comes from adding the booking fee instead of subtracting it: (15.10 + 2.50) ÷ 1.80 ≈ 9.78.
- (c) 19 — Method: set up the equation 15 + 9n = 186, then subtract the deposit and divide by the cost per student. Working: 9n = 186 − 15 = 171; n = 171 ÷ 9 = 19. Answer: 19 students. 20.67 comes from dividing the whole £186 by £9 without first subtracting the deposit: 186 ÷ 9 ≈ 20.67. 11.8 comes from swapping the two amounts round, subtracting £9 and dividing by £15: (186 − 9) ÷ 15 = 11.8. 22.33 comes from adding the deposit instead of subtracting it: (186 + 15) ÷ 9 ≈ 22.33.
- (c) 37.5 — The tangent at (18, 24) is 18x + 24y = 900 (using ax + by = r² with a = 18, b = 24, r² = 900). Setting x = 0 to find the y-intercept: 24y = 900, so y = 37.5. Choosing 900 skips the division by 24 and just repeats the constant. Choosing 50 divides the constant by the x-coefficient 18 instead of the y-coefficient 24. Choosing 1.25 uses the radius 30 instead of r² = 900 as the constant before dividing.
- (d) (3x − 2)(x + 4) — For 3x² + 10x − 8, find two numbers multiplying to 3 × (−8) = −24 and adding to 10: these are 12 and −2. Rewrite: 3x² + 12x − 2x − 8 = 3x(x + 4) − 2(x + 4) = (3x − 2)(x + 4). Choosing (3x + 2)(x − 4) expands to 3x² − 10x − 8 — the correct factor pair but the wrong signs, giving the middle term the wrong sign. Choosing (x − 2)(3x + 4) expands to 3x² − 2x − 8 — the 3 is attached to the wrong bracket, changing which terms combine for the x-coefficient. Choosing (3x − 4)(x + 2) expands to 3x² + 2x − 8 — this uses 4 and 2 instead of the correct pair 12 and 2, so the middle term does not come to 10x.
- (d) x = 3 — The table is symmetrical about the turning point: y = 0 at both x = 1 and x = 5, and the lowest value, y = −4, occurs exactly halfway between them, at x = 3. Choosing x = 5 picks one of the roots rather than the midpoint between them. Choosing x = 1 picks the other root for the same reason. Choosing x = 6 picks the x-value where y returns to its starting value of 5, which is not the turning point.
- (d) 10 — The right angle is at (1, 1). The vertical side has length 5 − 1 = 4 and the horizontal side has length 6 − 1 = 5, so the area is (4 × 5) ÷ 2 = 20 ÷ 2 = 10. A candidate who forgets to halve the product of the two sides gets 4 × 5 = 20. A candidate who forgets to subtract the shared vertex's coordinate and uses the raw coordinates 6 and 5 as the side lengths gets (6 × 5) ÷ 2 = 30 ÷ 2 = 15. A candidate who uses only one side length as the area gets 5.
- (d) w ≤ 630 — 'No more than 630 kg' means the weight can be exactly 630 kg or anything less, so the correct inequality is w ≤ 630, using 'less than or equal to' to include the limit itself. Writing w < 630 excludes 630 kg itself, as though the limit could not be reached exactly. Writing w ≥ 630 reverses the direction, describing a minimum weight rather than a maximum. Writing w > 630 both reverses the direction and excludes the boundary value. The inequality describing the lift's weight limit is w ≤ 630.
- (a) 2 — The common ratio is 54 ÷ 162 = 1/3, confirmed by 18 ÷ 54 = 1/3 and 6 ÷ 18 = 1/3. The next term is 6 × 1/3 = 2. A candidate who wrongly treats the sequence as arithmetic and subtracts the last difference (18 − 6 = 12) again gets 6 − 12 = −6. A candidate who multiplies by 3 instead of dividing, effectively reversing the sequence, gets 18. A candidate who guesses the ratio is 1/2 gets 6 × 1/2 = 3.
- (d) 2n² − n − 2 — First differences: 5, 9, 13, 17. Second differences: 4, 4, 4, so a = 4 ÷ 2 = 2. Subtracting 2n² (2, 8, 18, 32, 50) from the terms (−1, 4, 13, 26, 43) leaves −3, −4, −5, −6, −7, which is the linear expression −n − 2. So the nth term is 2n² − n − 2. Using the second difference itself as a, without halving it, gives 4n² − n − 2. Finding a = 2 correctly but dropping the linear remainder −n − 2 entirely leaves 2n². Treating the first first difference (5) as a common difference and building a + (n − 1)d = −1 + 5(n − 1) gives 5n − 6, which only matches the first two terms.
- (a) 1 — Method: the value of y when x = 0 is where the line meets the y-axis, which is the constant c in y = mx + c, so the gradient is worked out from the two given points first and the constant follows by substituting one of them. Working: m = (16 − 7) ÷ (5 − 2) = 9 ÷ 3 = 3, so the line is y = 3x + c; substituting x = 2 and y = 7 gives 7 = 3 × 2 + c, so c = 7 − 6 = 1, and the value of y when x = 0 is that constant. Answer: 1. The distractors: 3 comes from stopping at the gradient and offering it as the intercept; 4 comes from stepping back from x = 2 to x = 0 by one unit of x instead of two, 7 − 3 = 4; −1 comes from working the constant out as mx − y, 3 × 2 − 7 = −1, instead of y − mx.
