Answer key
- (d) t = 5 — The maximum height occurs halfway between the two times when the ball is at ground level: the midpoint of t = 1 and t = 9 is (1 + 9) ÷ 2 = 5, so the ball reaches its maximum height at t = 5 seconds. Getting t = 4 comes from halving the DIFFERENCE between the times, 9 − 1 = 8, then 8 ÷ 2 = 4, instead of finding their midpoint. Getting t = 8 uses that difference, 9 − 1 = 8, as if the gap between the two times were itself the time of the maximum. Getting t = 10 adds the two times, 1 + 9 = 10, but forgets to divide by 2.
- (b) x² + y² = 169 — Method: a circle centred on the origin has equation x² + y² = r², and every point on it satisfies that equation, so substituting the coordinates of a point that lies on the circle gives r² directly. Working: substituting x = 5 and y = 12 gives 5² + 12² = 25 + 144 = 169, so r² = 169 and the circle is x² + y² = 169. Answer: x² + y² = 169. The distractors: x² + y² = 13 uses the radius, √169 = 13, where r² belongs, which is the confusion between r and r² made in the other direction; x² + y² = 17 adds the two coordinates, 5 + 12, instead of adding their squares; x² + y² = 119 subtracts the squares, 144 − 25, treating 12 as the hypotenuse of the right-angled triangle rather than as one of the shorter sides.
- (a) −8 — −f(x) means take the output value from the table and change its sign, without changing which x-value is looked up. From the table, f(1) = 8, so −f(1) = −8. Reading f(1) = 8 from the table but forgetting to apply the negative sign gives 8. Misreading the row and using f(0) = 5 instead of f(1) = 8, then negating it, gives −5. Confusing −f(x) with f(x) − 1 — taking f(1) = 8 and subtracting 1 instead of negating — gives 7.
- (c) It has two different real solutions — Method: the discriminant is the quantity under the square root sign in the quadratic formula, so its sign decides how many real values the formula produces. Working: when the discriminant is positive its square root is a real number that is not zero, and the formula adds that root and subtracts it in turn, so the two results are different; a positive discriminant that is not a perfect square still gives two solutions, but they are not whole numbers. Answer: it has two different real solutions. The distractors: one repeated real solution is what a discriminant of zero gives, because adding and subtracting zero changes nothing; no real solutions is what a negative discriminant gives, because a negative number has no real square root; two whole-number solutions happens only when the discriminant is a perfect square and the division works out exactly, which a positive discriminant does not guarantee.
- (b) 4.39 — x₁ = ∛(150 − 3 × 4²) = ∛(150 − 48) = ∛102 = 4.672 (unrounded). x₂ = ∛(150 − 3 × 4.672²) = ∛(150 − 65.49) = ∛84.51 = 4.39 (2 d.p.). Choosing 4.67 stops after only one iteration, giving x₁ instead of x₂. Choosing 84.51 finds the value inside the cube root for x₂ but never takes the cube root. Choosing 6.32 comes from adding 3xₙ² instead of subtracting it inside the root, which does not match the given formula.
- (a) 4 — Rectangle 1: P = 2(9 + 4) = 2 × 13 = 26 cm. Rectangle 2: P = 2(6 + 5) = 2 × 11 = 22 cm. Difference = 26 − 22 = 4 cm. 2 comes from finding the difference between (l + w) for each rectangle, 13 − 11 = 2, but forgetting to double it. 26 comes from giving rectangle 1's whole perimeter instead of the difference between the two. 6 comes from doubling only the change in length, 2 × (9 − 6), and ignoring that the width also changed.
- (c) 360° — The graph of y = cos x repeats itself every 360°, so its period is 360°. 180° is the period of y = tan x, not y = cos x — confusing the two graphs gives this. 90° is the horizontal distance from a maximum of y = cos x to the next point where the graph crosses the x-axis, a quarter of the period, mistaken for the whole period. 720° comes from counting the interval containing two full repeats of the graph, from one maximum to the second repeat of that maximum, instead of the first.
- (d) 6 — Method: write an expression for each person's savings after w weeks, and set them equal. Working: 40 + 6w = 10 + 11w. Subtract 6w from both sides: 40 = 10 + 5w. Subtract 10: 30 = 5w, so w = 6. Answer: 6 weeks. 0 comes from setting only the weekly amounts equal, 6w = 11w, and ignoring the different starting amounts entirely. 10 comes from adding the two starting amounts and dividing by the difference in weekly amounts, (40 + 10) ÷ (11 − 6), instead of forming and solving the correct equation. 1.76 comes from adding the two weekly amounts instead of subtracting them when rearranging, (40 − 10) ÷ (11 + 6).
- (a) 130 — Method: substitute the total bill into the formula, then subtract the fixed charge and divide by the cost per text message. Working: 24.50 = 18 + 0.05t, so 0.05t = 24.50 − 18 = 6.50, t = 6.50 ÷ 0.05 = 130. Answer: 130 extra text messages. 490 comes from dividing the whole bill by 0.05 without first subtracting the £18 fixed charge: 24.50 ÷ 0.05 = 490. 13 comes from dividing the £6.50 by 0.5 instead of 0.05, moving the decimal point one place too far: 6.50 ÷ 0.5 = 13. 65 comes from dividing the £6.50 by 0.1 instead of 0.05.
- (a) x = 6 — Method: a minus sign in front of a bracket changes the sign of every term inside it, so expand the bracket first and then simplify. Working: expanding gives 4x − 2x + 6 = 18, which simplifies to 2x + 6 = 18; subtracting 6 from both sides gives 2x = 12, and dividing both sides by 2 gives x = 6. Answer: x = 6. The distractors: x = 12 comes from leaving the −6 unchanged when the bracket is removed, giving 4x − 2x − 6 = 18 and so 2x = 24; x = 24 comes from reaching 2x = 12 correctly and then multiplying by 2 instead of dividing by 2; x = 3 comes from dividing by 2 too early, at 2x + 6 = 18, and dividing only the 2x and the 18 while leaving the 6 untouched, which gives x + 6 = 9.
- (b) Translate −90° in x, then translate −2 in y. — cos(x + 90°) translates the graph 90° in the NEGATIVE x-direction, since a positive shift inside the bracket moves a graph left, not right, and subtracting 2 afterwards translates it 2 units in the negative y-direction (down). So the sequence is: translate −90° in x, then translate −2 in y. Using +90° in x reverses the direction of the horizontal shift — the sign inside the bracket moves the graph the opposite way to what it looks like. Using +2 in y reverses the direction of the vertical shift; subtracting 2 outside the function moves the graph down, not up. Describing the −2 as a reflection in the x-axis is wrong because a reflection turns positive y-values negative and vice versa, whereas here every y-value is simply reduced by the fixed amount 2, which is what a translation does, not a reflection.
- (c) 7 — To reverse the rule, subtract the constant then divide by the coefficient: 30−2=28, then 28÷4=7, so n=7. A candidate who adds the constant instead of subtracting it, a sign error when rearranging, would compute (30+2)÷4=32÷4=8. A candidate who subtracts the constant correctly but then forgets to divide by the coefficient would stop at 30−2=28. A candidate who treats 4n+2 as a single term 6n, adding the coefficient and constant together, would compute 30÷6=5.
- (a) A translation by vector (0, 3) — y = x² + 3 adds a constant outside the squaring, so it is a vertical translation of y = x² — every point moves the same distance parallel to the y-axis, with no change in x. The vector is (0, 3), matching the +3. A vector of (3, 0) confuses this with a horizontal shift; (0, −3) has the right axis but the wrong sign, since the graph moves up, not down; a stretch changes the shape of the curve, which adding a constant term never does.
- (c) 22 m — Rearranging P = 2l + 2w for l gives l = (P − 2w)/2. Substituting P = 60 and w = 8: l = (60 − 16)/2 = 44/2 = 22 m. Answering 30 m comes from ignoring the width altogether and working out l = P/2, which only holds when w = 0. Answering 38 m comes from adding 2w instead of subtracting it: (60 + 16)/2 = 38. Answering 11 m comes from dividing by 4 instead of 2, as if the formula were P = 4l + 4w. The pen's length is 22 m.
- (c) 55 — Continuing the pattern: 8+13=21 (5th term), 13+21=34 (6th term), 21+34=55 (7th term). A candidate who miscounts the position and stops one term early would give 34, the 6th term. A candidate who doubles the most recent term instead of adding the two before it would compute 34×2=68. A candidate who adds a non-adjacent pair — the 4th and 6th terms, skipping the 5th — would compute 13+34=47.
