- 1.Show that the equation x³ − x − 3 = 0 has a solution between x = 1 and x = 2, by working out f(1) and f(2), where f(x) = x³ − x − 3.y = x
- 2.Solve the inequality 6.3x + 1.8 ≤ 40. Hence write down the greatest number with exactly one decimal place that satisfies the inequality.
- 3.The point (9, 12) lies on the circle x² + y² = 225, which has centre (0, 0). The tangent to the circle at (9, 12) crosses the x-axis at the point P. Work out the x-coordinate of P.
- 4.Mia buys 3 identical notebooks and a pen costing £1.50. She pays a total of £9.90. Form an equation using n for the cost of one notebook, and solve it to find n.
- 5.Work out the value of 4p² − 3 when p = 2.5
- 6.A water tank is a cuboid with a square base of side x metres and height (x + 1) metres. Its volume is 10 m³. This gives x³ + x² − 10 = 0, which can be solved using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = ∛(10 − xₙ²). Taking x₀ = 2, so that x₁ is the value found after the formula has been used once, work out x₃ correct to 3 decimal places.
- 7.The equation x³ = 6x + 20 can be solved using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = ∛(6xₙ + 20). Taking x₀ = 3, x₁ = 3.3620 correct to 4 decimal places. Using the full unrounded value of x₁, work out x₂ correct to 3 decimal places.
- 8.The diagram shows a distance–time graph for a cyclist travelling at a constant speed, for the first 6 minutes of a journey. Distance is in kilometres and time is in minutes. Work out how far the cyclist would travel in 20 minutes at the same speed.
- 9.The graph of y = 60 × (0.5)ˣ is sketched for x ≥ 0. Which statement correctly describes what happens to the curve as x increases?
- 10.Three consecutive integers add up to 72. Using n for the smallest integer, form an equation and solve it to find the smallest of the three integers.
- 11.A population of bacteria doubles every 3 hours. It starts at 800. Work out the population after 9 hours.
- 12.A ball's height, h metres, t seconds after being thrown follows h = (t − 1)(9 − t). Given that the ball is at ground level at t = 1 and t = 9, work out at what time t the ball reaches its maximum height, using symmetry.
- 13.A car's speed-time graph shows the following: its speed increases steadily from 0 m/s to 20 m/s over the first 10 seconds, then stays constant at 20 m/s for the next 15 seconds. Work out the total distance travelled in the first 25 seconds.
- 14.The graph of y = 20/x is drawn for x > 0. As the value of x increases, what happens to the value of y?
- 15.A gym charges a joining fee plus a monthly fee. Anna paid £100 in total after 3 months of membership. Ben paid £160 in total after 6 months of membership (same joining fee and monthly fee as Anna). Work out the monthly fee.
