- 1.A car accelerates uniformly from rest at 2.5 m/s² until it reaches a speed of 20 m/s, then travels at this constant speed for a further 30 seconds. Work out the total distance travelled.
- 2.A cyclist accelerates uniformly from rest to 6 m/s in 4 seconds, travels at a constant 6 m/s for 10 seconds, then decelerates uniformly to rest in 3 seconds. Work out the total distance the cyclist travels.
- 3.A company's cost, in £, for producing x items is shown on a graph. The tangent to the curve at x = 50 passes through (30, 400) and (70, 800). Interpret the gradient of this tangent in the context of the company's costs.
- 4.An exponential graph y = A × rˣ passes through the points (0, 8) and (2, 18). Work out the value of r, correct to 2 decimal places.
- 5.A van's value depreciates by 18% each year. After 2 years it is worth £5,379.20. Work out its value when it was new, correct to the nearest pound.
- 6.A circular pond has equation x² + y² = 20, with lengths in metres from the centre of the garden. A straight path runs along the line y = 2x, entering the pond and leaving it again. Work out the coordinates of the two points where the path meets the edge of the pond.y = 2x
- 7.On Monday, a runner covers 15 km in 2.5 hours. On Tuesday, she covers 12 km in 1.5 hours. Using the formula speed = distance ÷ time, work out on which day she ran faster, and by how much.
- 8.A water tank is a cuboid with a square base of side x metres and height (x + 1) metres. Its volume is 10 m³. This gives x³ + x² − 10 = 0, which can be solved using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = ∛(10 − xₙ²). Taking x₀ = 2, so that x₁ is the value found after the formula has been used once, work out x₃ correct to 3 decimal places.
- 9.A tree is 2 metres tall. Each year its height increases by 10% of its height at the start of that year. Work out the height of the tree after 3 years, giving your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 10.A school trip costs a £15 deposit plus £9 per student for the coach. The total cost for a class is £186. Work out how many students went on the trip.
- 11.A rectangular sheet of metal measures 20 cm by 12 cm. A square of side x cm is cut from each corner and the sides are folded up to make an open box of volume 200 cm³. This gives x³ − 16x² + 60x − 50 = 0, which can be solved using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = (16xₙ² − xₙ³ + 50)/60. The starting value is x₀ = 1, so x₁ is the value after the formula has been used once. Work out x₃, and use it to find the longer side of the base of the box correct to 1 decimal place.
- 12.A cyclist's speed-time graph is described as follows: speed increases steadily from 0 m/s to 8 m/s over the first 4 seconds, stays constant at 8 m/s for the next 6 seconds, then decreases steadily to 0 m/s over the final 2 seconds. Work out the total distance travelled.
- 13.Solve the inequality 2(3x − 1) ≥ 4x + 8.
- 14.A plumber charges a call-out fee plus an hourly rate. The total cost, y in pounds, of a job lasting x hours is given by y = 45x + 60. Work out the total cost of a job that lasts 3 hours.y = 45x + 60
- 15.A machine bought for £2,400 loses 12% of its value every year. After how many complete years does its value first fall below £1,500?
