- 1.The line y = 2x + 7 and the circle x² + y² = 4 are given. By finding the discriminant of the resulting quadratic, without solving it fully, work out how many points the line and the circle intersect at.y = 2x + 7
- 2.A rectangular photo has length (x + 3) cm and width x cm. Its area is 40 cm². Work out the value of x.
- 3.The mean of four numbers is 12.5. Three of the numbers are 8, 15 and 19. Form an equation using n for the fourth number, and solve it to find n.
- 4.An allotment is in the shape of a rectangle. Its length is 5 m more than its width, x metres, and its area is 20 m². This gives x² + 5x − 20 = 0, which can be solved using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = 20 ÷ (xₙ + 5). Taking x₀ = 2, so that x₁ is the value found after the formula has been used once, work out x₂ correct to 2 decimal places.
- 5.A company's cost, in £, for producing x items is shown on a graph. The tangent to the curve at x = 50 passes through (30, 400) and (70, 800). Interpret the gradient of this tangent in the context of the company's costs.
- 6.A circle has centre (0, 0) and passes through the point (12, 35). Work out the equation of the circle.
- 7.The equation 7x = x² + 3 can be solved using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = (xₙ² + 3) ÷ 7. Taking x₀ = 0.4, x₁ = 0.4514 correct to 4 decimal places. Using the full unrounded value of x₁, work out x₂ correct to 3 decimal places.
- 8.The iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = 12 ÷ (xₙ + 2) is used repeatedly, starting from x₀ = 1. Work out the value that xₙ approaches, correct to 2 decimal places.
- 9.f(x) = x³ − 3x² − 4. Work out the pair of consecutive integers between which the solution of f(x) = 0 lies.y = x
- 10.A tap's flow rate, in litres per minute, is plotted against time, in minutes, on a graph. What are the units of the area under this graph?
- 11.The graph of P = 480 ÷ V shows how the pressure, P pascals, of a gas depends on its volume, V cm³, at constant temperature. Use the relationship to work out the volume when the pressure is 32 pascals, and then work out by how much the volume increases when the pressure drops to 24 pascals.
- 12.A closed cylinder has radius r cm and height (r + 5) cm. Its volume is 300 cm³, giving the equation πr²(r + 5) = 300, which can be solved using the iterative formula rₙ₊₁ = √(300 ÷ (π(rₙ + 5))). Taking r₀ = 3, work out r₃ correct to 2 decimal places.
- 13.Two students each use the trapezium rule to estimate the area under the same curve between x = 0 and x = 8. Student A uses 4 strips of width 2. Student B uses 8 strips of width 1. Which estimate is more likely to be closer to the true area, and why?
- 14.A bath is filled with water; the graph of volume (litres) against time (minutes) is a curve, since the flow rate changes. The tangent to the curve at t = 10 minutes passes through the points (8, 130) and (12, 190), and the volume in the bath at t = 10 minutes is 160 litres. Use the gradient of this tangent to estimate the volume in the bath 5 minutes after t = 10 minutes.
- 15.Two numbers have a sum of 45. The larger number is 9 more than the smaller number. Form an equation using n for the smaller number, and solve it to find the larger number.
