- 1.Kai writes the expression 8 − 3x + 5x² and says it has three terms. Ryan says it only has two terms because a number on its own is not a term. Work out the correct number of terms in the expression.
- 2.A car's journey is represented by a velocity-time graph. The total distance travelled, found from the area under the graph, is 350 metres, and the total time for the journey is 25 seconds. Work out the car's average speed for the whole journey, in m/s.
- 3.The braking distance of a car, in metres, is estimated using the formula d = 0.4v² + 6, where v is the speed in mph. A car travelling at 35 mph brakes. Work out the estimated braking distance.
- 4.The diagram shows a distance–time graph for a cyclist travelling at a constant speed, for the first 6 minutes of a journey. Distance is in kilometres and time is in minutes. Work out how far the cyclist would travel in 20 minutes at the same speed.
- 5.The equation x³ − 5x − 3 = 0 can be rearranged to give an iterative formula of the form xₙ₊₁ = ∛(…). Work out which one of these is a correct rearrangement.
- 6.A regular hexagon has sides of length (x + 2) cm. Write down an expression, in terms of x, for the perimeter of the hexagon.
- 7.The table shows the speed, in m/s, of a cyclist at times, in seconds, 1 second apart: 0 at t = 0, 7 at t = 1, 12 at t = 2, 15 at t = 3, 16 at t = 4, 14 at t = 5, 9 at t = 6. Using the trapezium rule with strip width 1 second, estimate the distance the cyclist travels between t = 2 and t = 5 only.
- 8.Six years ago Harry was three times as old as his brother Leo. Harry is now 24 years old. Work out Leo's age now.
- 9.A number, n, is tripled and then 4.5 is added. The result is 22.5. Form an equation and solve it to find n.
- 10.A distance-time graph is a straight line from (0, 0) to (4, 100), where time is in hours and distance is in kilometres. Work out the gradient of the line.
- 11.A bacteria colony doubles every 4 hours and its size is recorded only every 4 hours. The recorded population 20 hours after the start is 9,600. After how many hours did the recorded population first exceed 1,000?
- 12.By completing the square, find the turning point of the curve y = x² + 8x − 3.y = x² + 8x − 3
- 13.The graph of y = 20/x is drawn for x > 0. As the value of x increases, what happens to the value of y?
- 14.The mass of a chemical sample decays by 15% every hour. It starts at 500 g. Work out the mass remaining after 3 hours, correct to 1 decimal place.
- 15.A closed cylinder has radius r cm and height (r + 5) cm. Its volume is 300 cm³, giving the equation πr²(r + 5) = 300, which can be solved using the iterative formula rₙ₊₁ = √(300 ÷ (π(rₙ + 5))). Taking r₀ = 3, work out r₃ correct to 2 decimal places.
