- 1.The iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = 5 − 3/xₙ is used with starting value x₀ = 2.5, so that x₁ is the value after the formula has been used once. Work out x₄ correct to 3 significant figures.
- 2.A number, n, is tripled and then 4.5 is added. The result is 22.5. Form an equation and solve it to find n.
- 3.A phone plan costs a fixed £15 per month plus 8p per minute of calls. In one month, Jamal's bill was £23.80. Form an equation using m for the number of minutes, and solve it to find how many minutes Jamal used that month.
- 4.By completing the square, find the turning point of the curve y = 3x² + 12x + 7.y = 3x² + 12x + 7
- 5.The graph of y = 20/x is drawn for x > 0. As the value of x increases, what happens to the value of y?
- 6.A circular pond has equation x² + y² = 20, with lengths in metres from the centre of the garden. A straight path runs along the line y = 2x, entering the pond and leaving it again. Work out the coordinates of the two points where the path meets the edge of the pond.y = 2x
- 7.A cafe sells coffees at £c each and pastries at £p each. Three coffees and two pastries cost £9.60. Two coffees and two pastries cost £7.60. Work out the price of one coffee.
- 8.By completing the square, find the turning point of the curve y = x² + 8x − 3.y = x² + 8x − 3
- 9.The table shows the height, in metres, of a firework rocket at various times, in seconds, during its flight: 40 at t = 2, 54 at t = 3, and 60 at t = 4. Use the chord between t = 2 and t = 4 to estimate the gradient of the height-time graph at t = 3, stating the correct units.
- 10.A distance-time graph is a straight line from (0, 0) to (4, 100), where time is in hours and distance is in kilometres. Work out the gradient of the line.
- 11.A car is decelerating. The tangent to its velocity-time graph at t = 12 seconds passes through the points (8, 22) and (16, 6), where velocity is in m/s and time is in seconds. Work out the gradient of this tangent, in m/s².
- 12.Look at the statement 2x + 5 = 17. Considering whether it is an expression, an equation, a formula, or an identity, which classification is correct?
- 13.A graph shows the total monthly cost of a mobile phone tariff against the number of minutes of calls. The line starts at £12 and stays level until 200 minutes, then rises by 5p for each further minute of calls. Use the graph to work out the total cost of a month in which 250 minutes of calls are made.
- 14.A rectangular photo has length (x + 3) cm and width x cm. Its area is 40 cm². Work out the value of x.
- 15.Four sequences are shown below. Sequence P: 4, 8, 16, 32, ... Sequence Q: 4, 8, 12, 16, ... Sequence R: 4, 7, 12, 19, ... Sequence S: 4, 9, 16, 25, ... Work out which of the sequences P, Q, R and S is geometric.
