- 1.A graph shows the total monthly cost of a mobile phone tariff against the number of minutes of calls. The line starts at £12 and stays level until 200 minutes, then rises by 5p for each further minute of calls. Use the graph to work out the total cost of a month in which 250 minutes of calls are made.
- 2.Point R has coordinates (3, −5). Point R is reflected in the line y = 2 to point S. Write down the coordinates of S.
- 3.Work out the value of 4p² − 3 when p = 2.5
- 4.On Monday, a runner covers 15 km in 2.5 hours. On Tuesday, she covers 12 km in 1.5 hours. Using the formula speed = distance ÷ time, work out on which day she ran faster, and by how much.
- 5.By completing the square, find the turning point of the curve y = x² + 8x − 3.y = x² + 8x − 3
- 6.A gas company charges a standing charge plus a rate per unit used. The total cost, y in pounds, for using x units is given by y = 0.15x + 20. Work out the cost of using 200 units.y = 0.15x + 20
- 7.A quadratic graph y = ax² + bx + c has its turning point on the y-axis. Which statement about its roots must be true?
- 8.Two numbers have a sum of 45. The larger number is 9 more than the smaller number. Form an equation using n for the smaller number, and solve it to find the larger number.
- 9.A rectangle has width x cm. Its length is 3 cm more than its width. The perimeter of the rectangle is 38 cm. Form an equation and solve it to find x.
- 10.The table shows the velocity, in m/s, of a train at various times, in seconds: 0 at t = 0, 20 at t = 4, 35 at t = 10, 27 at t = 14. Assuming the velocity changes at a constant rate between each pair of readings, estimate the distance the train travels between t = 0 and t = 12, using the trapezium rule.
- 11.Work out the value of 5m² + 3m when m = −2.4
- 12.Kai writes the expression 8 − 3x + 5x² and says it has three terms. Ryan says it only has two terms because a number on its own is not a term. Work out the correct number of terms in the expression.
- 13.The diagram shows a distance–time graph for a cyclist travelling at a constant speed, for the first 6 minutes of a journey. Distance is in kilometres and time is in minutes. Work out how far the cyclist would travel in 20 minutes at the same speed.
- 14.A model rocket's height is given by h = −5t² + 20t, where h is in metres and t is in seconds. A student says the graph of h against t is n-shaped. Which statement gives the correct verdict on the SHAPE and the reason that settles it from the equation?
- 15.A company's weekly profit, P thousand pounds, when it makes x thousand items is modelled by P = x² − 8x + 12, for x ≥ 0. Work out the values of x for which the company makes a loss.
