- 1.A phone company works out a monthly bill, £B, using the formula B = 18 + 0.05t, where £18 is the fixed monthly charge and t is the number of extra text messages sent beyond the free allowance, each charged at 5p. Farida's bill for one month is £24.50. Work out the number of extra text messages, t, she sent.
- 2.Four sequences are shown below. Sequence P: 4, 8, 16, 32, ... Sequence Q: 4, 8, 12, 16, ... Sequence R: 4, 7, 12, 19, ... Sequence S: 4, 9, 16, 25, ... Work out which of the sequences P, Q, R and S is geometric.
- 3.A ball is thrown in the air. Its height, h metres, above the ground after t seconds is given in this table: when t = 0, h = 0; when t = 1, h = 15; when t = 2, h = 20; when t = 3, h = 15; when t = 4, h = 0. Use the table to find the two times, in seconds, at which the ball is at ground level.
- 4.Mia buys 3 identical notebooks and a pen costing £1.50. She pays a total of £9.90. Form an equation using n for the cost of one notebook, and solve it to find n.
- 5.The formula for the perimeter of a rectangle is P = 2(l + w). One rectangle has l = 9 cm and w = 4 cm. A second rectangle has l = 6 cm and w = 5 cm. Work out how many cm greater the perimeter of the first rectangle is than the perimeter of the second.
- 6.A cyclist's distance-time graph shows the following: she travels 12 km in the first 30 minutes at a steady speed, then rests for 30 minutes, then travels a further 8 km in the next 15 minutes. Work out her average speed, in km/h, for the whole journey.
- 7.The table shows the speed, in m/s, of a cyclist at times, in seconds, 1 second apart: 0 at t = 0, 7 at t = 1, 12 at t = 2, 15 at t = 3, 16 at t = 4, 14 at t = 5, 9 at t = 6. Using the trapezium rule with strip width 1 second, estimate the distance the cyclist travels between t = 2 and t = 5 only.
- 8.A tap's flow rate, in litres per minute, is plotted against time, in minutes, on a graph. What are the units of the area under this graph?
- 9.A population of bacteria doubles every 3 hours. It starts at 800. Work out the population after 9 hours.
- 10.A taxi company charges a £2.50 booking fee plus £1.80 per mile. A journey costs £15.10 in total. Work out the number of miles travelled.
- 11.A cafe sells coffees at £c each and pastries at £p each. Three coffees and two pastries cost £9.60. Two coffees and two pastries cost £7.60. Work out the price of one coffee.
- 12.A circle has centre (0, 0) and passes through the point (12, 35). Work out the equation of the circle.
- 13.Two students each use the trapezium rule to estimate the area under the same curve between x = 0 and x = 8. Student A uses 4 strips of width 2. Student B uses 8 strips of width 1. Which estimate is more likely to be closer to the true area, and why?
- 14.The formula connecting speed, distance and time is v = s ÷ t. Work out v, in km/h, when s = 180 and t = 4.
- 15.The iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = √(2xₙ + 3) is used repeatedly, starting from x₀ = 1. As n increases, the values of xₙ converge to a limit, L. Work out L.
