- 1.The equation x³ = 6x + 20 can be solved using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = ∛(6xₙ + 20). Taking x₀ = 3, x₁ = 3.3620 correct to 4 decimal places. Using the full unrounded value of x₁, work out x₂ correct to 3 decimal places.
- 2.A car park charges by the hour. Parking for 1 hour costs £5, 2 hours costs £9, 3 hours costs £13 and 4 hours costs £17, with the cost increasing by the same amount for each extra hour. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the cost, in pounds, of parking for n hours.
- 3.A phone company works out a monthly bill, £B, using the formula B = 18 + 0.05t, where £18 is the fixed monthly charge and t is the number of extra text messages sent beyond the free allowance, each charged at 5p. Farida's bill for one month is £24.50. Work out the number of extra text messages, t, she sent.
- 4.A bacteria colony doubles every 4 hours and its size is recorded only every 4 hours. The recorded population 20 hours after the start is 9,600. After how many hours did the recorded population first exceed 1,000?
- 5.The tangent to a curve at the point where x = 4 passes through the points (2, 5) and (6, 21). Use these two points to estimate the gradient of the curve at x = 4.
- 6.The graph of y = 60 × (0.5)ˣ is sketched for x ≥ 0. Which statement correctly describes what happens to the curve as x increases?
- 7.A rectangle has width x cm. Its length is 3 cm more than its width. The perimeter of the rectangle is 38 cm. Form an equation and solve it to find x.
- 8.A scout leader is 44 years old and one of the scouts is 16 years old. Work out how many years it will be until the leader is exactly twice as old as the scout.
- 9.The equation x² − 4x − 1 = 0 can be solved using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = √(4xₙ + 1). The starting value is x₀ = 1, so x₁ is the value after the formula has been used once. Work out x₂ correct to 3 decimal places.
- 10.A rectangular photo has length (x + 3) cm and width x cm. Its area is 40 cm². Work out the value of x.
- 11.The graph of y = 20/x is drawn for x > 0. As the value of x increases, what happens to the value of y?
- 12.A circular running track is modelled on a grid whose centre is the origin, where each unit represents 1 metre. A floodlight at the point (30, 40) stands on the edge of the track. A second floodlight stands on the edge of the track at the point (0, k), where k is positive. Work out the value of k.
- 13.A cup of tea cools after being made. Its temperature-time graph is a curve. Three tangents are drawn on the graph: at t = 2 minutes the tangent has gradient −8; at t = 10 minutes the tangent has gradient −3; at t = 20 minutes the tangent has gradient −0.5. Which of these statements about the tea's cooling is correct?
- 14.The formula connecting speed, distance and time is v = s ÷ t. Work out v, in km/h, when s = 180 and t = 4.
- 15.A tap fills a tank at a varying rate. A graph shows the rate of flow, in litres per minute, against time, in minutes. What does the area under this graph represent?
